1970 Cadillac Coupe de Ville Convertible – 25 year storage!!
(The second picture is for illustration purposes only, that is not this car). I knew about this car for about ten years but the owner never wanted to sell. He was always waiting until he had time to restore it and only lately his wife told him to “clean up” the back yard and this car had to go. Fortunately I heard about it and was able to buy it. This is not a barn find because the car was parked in his back yard under a huge tree which mostly saved it from the elements. Here is what I know about the car – straight from the owners memory:
The car was purchased in 1984 from a friend of the current owner and was used as a daily driver for a bit. Because the owner worked as a mechanic at a very high end exotic car dealership he perked the Cadillac and drove all kind of other cars instead of it. So the Cadillac sat, until he decided to put it away under his tree for later and covered it with tarps so save the top and interior. This is where I saw it first and several sets of tarps were used because the hard California sun deteriorated them fast. He then “sold” the car to a friend (brother in law?) but the sale never got completed, that is why the last registration sticker is from 1988.
When he realized he was going to put it away for a longer time he “drowned” the carburetor (and thus cylinders) with oil and put it on blocks because the tires were brand new back then. The top was put down in the boot and the upholstery covered. It sat there until a bit ago when he decided to sell it.
It took me half an hour to start it on a gas can because I did not want to risk to contaminate the carburetor with any rust that might have formed in the gas tank. It started and idled very nice immediately, the tires still held their air just fine and I drove it home (about 2 Miles) without any problems. After I got it home I cleaned it up a bit and did some basic tests to it to check out its general condition. Because I have other projects now I will offer the car as it is now, if it does not get sold I will do the (easy) restoration myself. The following pictures will show how nicely rust free and straight it is, EVERYTHING is factory original with matching numbers drive train. The VIN F0128669, body and engine number they are perfectly in sequence with the production numbers of these cars and it has the desirable old California “pink slip” with matching blue and gold license plates. The mileage of 112949 is original according to the owner, the car is no in the DMV system anymore. (This is just information for California bidders.)
The body has most of its original, factory (rare!) Nottingham Green metallic paint with some (close to original) spray painted areas. When I washed the debris off a lot of the old paint came off with it – deteriorated by the sun. The body has it’s original sheet metal and is generally very straight, especially in these large panels, only a bit of waviness in the (repaired) RH door. The body is very solid with a few bubbles showing in the front lower fenders and the front hood corners (as pictured) so you see this car was born and raised in Los Angeles. OK, let me first show the outside it they stands now:
These are the door jambs, posts, lock areas and gutter close ups, other than surface rust they are fine. No pinhole rust!
The tinted glass is original and very nice, all electric windows go up and down except for the RH door. The bumpers show some dents and will need rechroming (or replacing as these are easy to find). All lights and turn signals work, all seals are dried out. The molding on the RH door got damaged and is in my opinion the only one not with the car. I did not polish or shine any brightwork; the grille is very nice and will only need detailing.
It has it’s 4 original wheel covers and the fenders skirts fit very well. Here are also the floors without the back seat to show you the quality of the sheet metal and original color:
Here is the interior – it is a factory like setup but because I think these were all leather off factory (?) it might be redone at some time – the headrests are nice originals. Also the door panels need some work, the rear side panels are nice and all seem complete with mostly working electrical. The carpet seems stock and it has Cadillac throw mats. The power seat moves but will need some fine tuning; all inside hardware looks original and complete as pictured, it also has the factory (green) seat belt kit.
The dash is all stock and nice, has however a few small sun cracks as pictured and the sun visors are nice originals. The instruments seem to work, they all indicate *something*. The dash seems to have nothing missing, the Am/FM radio only crackles, the lights, flasher, windshield wipers and blower all work and things like the woodgrain will need a good detailing.
The original motor starts easily, does not rattle or smoke or leak and idles very good. It has all it’s original accessories including exhaust manifold heat shields. The brakes, including booster work very well and do not leak, I did not have to do anything with them. The power steering works great without noise or shuddering, I see no leaks. The transmission shifts good through all gears but has a leak at the front seal (I think) that drips on the exhaust system and develops smoke. So the transmission needs a new seal for sure, I will also not drive it again for that reason to not damage more inside. The air conditioning was disconnected long ago but is all there.
Here are the engine compartment corners and hood hardware; as stock as you will ever find. No play in the hinges and they work well, no rust in the gutters.
Here is the luggage compartment; bone stock and complete with a spare and (worn) side cardboards. The gutters of the trunk compartment are very solid, the trunk lid fits well and is very straight – the trunk emblem and lock work fine.
The floors and frame are very nice and rust free other than surface rust and show no road debris damage. The exhaust system has an audible leak in the front, it also looks like this car had a factory undercoating. The bottoms and seams of the doors are very nice and original, confirming its dry southern heritage.
The convertible top is folded away in the boot and I did not try to move it from it’s resting position, the original rear glass sits on the rear seat.
If anyone is interested in anything else I can take more pictures. No other parts are included, the car can be inspected at any time – update it mechanically and drive it as is or use it as a perfect basis for a full blown restoration or slam or bag it . Thank you.
I have tried to represent the vehicle as good as possible. Please review the pictures and email me if there are still open questions, I'm happy to reply. I can help with finding a shipper to either Overseas or East Coast, just contact me about it. (For overseas buyers: Taking the car to the docks for you will be an additional $150, we've done it many times.)
MY CONDITIONS - VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ !!! Please do not ask what the reserve is--this is an auction. The title is free and clear and ready to be signed over, US buyers have to go through DMV. No trades are accepted and I reserve the right to end the auction early for any reason whatsoever. If you have no feedback or more than 3% negative fb, I will cancel your bid automatically before auction's end if you don't contact me to get clearance to bid--no exceptions! This shouldn't be a problem for most of you, but I must ascertain if you are a serious bidder or not, as I don't want to list the car again.
All prospective purchasers agree that this description is solely for convenience, and is not part of any contract of sale for the vehicle. My description is my opinion only, and should not be considered a complete description of any or all faults, and may not be relied upon, taken as fact or otherwise considered a representation or warranty or any sort. The car is sold as-is, where-is with all faults known or unknown. These should only be considered the ramblings of a guy who likes old cars. Please see the car in person or send a representative for inspection. Remember, this is a 42+ year old car that has been used; it is not showroom new. If you have ever had a classic vehicle, or you are considering owning one, you should understand that there is an almost endless list of repairs, improvements, corrections and details that can be attended to. Like the car, I am old too, so I may have forgotten things that are important to you. That’s why you should send someone to inspect this or any car you are considering purchasing. I apologize for this lawyerly disclaimer, but we live in strange times.
Even though I have attempted to identify all the flaws I know of; please realize you are buying a 42 year old car, and so you should not expect it to be exactly like a 42 day old car! There may be minor flaws or features of the car that I did not catch, I just cannot possibly cover every detail that might be a concern to every buyer. The car comes with no warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. Like all Classic cars, you should expect normal wear and tinkering given it's age and mileage. Neither I nor the car have anything to hide, but we cannot possibly know everything that might be of concern to you. We'll be happy to accommodate your request to view the car in person. All sales are final and bidding on this auction constitutes acceptance of these terms in their entirety.
You are bidding to buy this car, not to have the right to take a look at it! Your bid is a legal binding contract, and feedback will be left on the winning bidder, good or bad, depending on your actions. I simply do not tolerate bidders who do not step up to the plate and will pursue them to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Payment: A non-refundable Paypal deposit of $250 is due IMMEDIATELY after the winning bid, just to weed out the bidders up to no good. If that doesn't happen, the auction will run it's course. (Thanks for that option, eBay!) Certified check, M/O, wire transfer, or cash only for the remainder and due within 7 days of auction close or the buyer will forfeit it’s rights for the car and it will be relisted. Full payment must clear my bank before pick-up is even attempted. The car must be picked up within 14 days of auction close or you are able to arrange something else with me. Please email me if you have questions that are not covered by the narrative or pictures. Thanks and good luck!

Cadillac is issuing a recall on 82,620 examples of the 2013-2016 ATS worldwide to fix a compliance issue with the sunroof controls. Until a service bulletin goes out to take care of things, there's also a stop sale on the luxury compact in the United States, The Detroit News reports. Of the affected models, 63,665 are in the US, according to a statement sent to Autoblog, and 7,922 of them are in Canada. The problem is actually the same issue as a recall on nearly 59,000 examples of the 2013-2015 ATS in the US in February. In them, the controls for the tilt and slide of the roof aren't recessed enough to meet government standards for the force necessary to operate the buttons. The Feds believe that someone could accidentally activate the auto-close and potentially be at risk. At the time, Cadillac dealers installed a new trim plate to add the needed clearance. In the latest update, the company is adding the 2016 model year, and according to The Detroit News, 70 percent of the cars from the original campaign also need another new trim plate. Unsurprisingly for such a minor defect, there are no known crashes, injuries, fatalities, or customer complaints related to this issue, according to the announcement by General Motors. Cadillac ATS Statement: General Motors is recalling 63,665 Cadillac ATS sedans in the United States from the 2013-2016 model years because the power-operated roof panel systems on these vehicles will auto-close when the non-recessed portion of the "Slide" or "Tilt" switches are pressed and the roof panel is open. Because these switches are not fully recessed, they can be actuated with less force than required to comply with applicable federal standards. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this issue and has received no customer complaints. The total population of the recall including Canada, Mexico and exports is 82,620. Johan de Nysschen has been at his new post as president of Cadillac for not even three months , but he's already seen two of his most notable accomplishments from his two-year tenure as president of Infiniti matched by Cadillac. The brand has announced that it is relocating its headquarters, and is now officially changing its nomenclature.
The brand's new flagship model will abandon the familiar three-letter designation enjoyed by every other model in the range (aside from the Escalade), and adopt an alpha-numeric title. So, rather than the expected title of LTS, Cadillac's top-end car will be called the CT6.
Of course, this won't be limited to just one model. According to Cadillac's press release, "familiar lettering like 'CT' would be used for car models, with the number indicating the relative size and position of the cars in the hierarchy of Cadillac models." And yes, that means what you think it means - Cadillac will use the exact same naming formula, albeit with different letters, as Infiniti.

People are a weird sort. Even after registering over 70 recalls through the first three-quarters of 2014, General Motors saw its best Q3 results since Jimmy Carter was in the White House, registering over 2.4 million global sales between June and September on the back of strong results in the US and China.
US sales were marshaled by good results for GM's pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which bumped the manufacturer's truck market share to 35.6 percent, up nearly three points from Q1 2014. Buick has seen healthy growth as well, with the Encore dominating its segment for the sixth month running.
It was China, though, that really bolstered GM's sales, as the company's efforts to top last year's record-setting 3.16 million units continued apace. Small SUV sales saw massive growth, with Encore, Chevrolet Trax and Captiva figures jumping 90 percent in Q3. Brand-wise, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick all saw sales gains in the PRC, with each recording double-digit year-over-year jumps. Cadillac sales alone were up 63 percent compared to the first nine months of 2013.
