GM Design shows what could have been and what might be

Thu, May 27 2021

We periodically like to check in with GM Design's Instagram account to see what they're cooking up. Even better is when we catch a glimpse of an alternate history of what legendary designers from The General's past were thinking, though those ideas may not have made it into production. This week, for example, the account posted some illustrations from George Camp, whose career at GM spanned nearly four decades, from 1963 to 2001. One of the renderings is of what appears to be a 1971-72 Pontiac GTO Judge, but with two headlights instead of the production unit's quad beams. The rear departs from the canonical version most dramatically, with a massive integrated wing. Other bits that didn't make the production cut include large side vents, a gill-like side marker and rectangular intakes below the headlights that wouldn't be out of place on a modern design today. Amazingly, from what we can make out of the date, it appears that the drawing was done sometime in 1965, which makes it quite prescient.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) There's also a very aerodynamic interpretation of a Corvette ZR-1. To our eyes it splits the difference between the 1986 Corvette Indy concept and a fourth-generation F-body Pontiac Firebird, so perhaps parts of Camp's work on this sketch did make it into physical form. There's also a radical sports car concept from May 1970 that resembles the Mazda RX-500 concept from the same year, a Syd Mead-looking Cadillac coupe, and an Oldsmobile with a cool take on the company's trademark waterfall grille and elements of the Colonnade Cutlass at the rear. Other recent posts include a FJ Cruiser-like off-road EV, a sleek coupe with the Chevy corporate grille, and a rendering of a Silverado-esque pickup that looks far better than the current production version.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by GM Design (@generalmotorsdesign) It's pretty easy to lose hours in the account, but it's always fascinating to see GM's visions of what could have been and what might be. GM recalls 2014 Cadillac CTS recall

Wed, 02 Jul 2014

No, that headline isn't a typo - General Motors has reportedly issued a recall for one of its own recalls. The recall of a recall affects the recall of the 2014 Cadillac CTS, which wasn't supposed to be recalled. Except that the 2014 CTS was supposed to be recalled. Oh no, now we've gone cross-eyed.
Allow us to explain. The redesigned, third-generation CTS Sedan does not feature a faulty ignition switch, while the 2014 CTS Coupe and Wagon, which are based on the second-gen car, do. And as it turns out, there are only 264 of those vehicles included in last week's 8.2-million-unit, ignition-switch recall. Model year 2003 to 2013 CTS Sedans, Coupes and Wagons are still covered.
It's not entirely clear how this, frankly, colossal mistake was made, although we're betting GM is rapidly trying to get to the bottom of this embarrassing issue. Regardless, let's just take what solace we can in there being one less vehicle that GM has recalled this year.

2018 Cadillac CTS-V gets frosty with 115 Glacier Metallic Edition models

Sun, Aug 27 2017

To celebrate the company's 115th anniversary, Cadillac has introduced a special edition of the CTS-V called the Glacier Metallic Edition. Apparently, Cadillac really likes creating special edition models focused on ice and cold. The name comes from the exclusive Glacier Metallic paint, which to us looks like a shade of white, but according to Cadillac, it's actually gray. In addition to the special color, the car also includes the normally optional Carbon Fiber Package and Luxury Package, along with red Brembo brake calipers. It also fits silver and gray forged wheels instead of the black ones the Carbon Fiber Package typically comes with. All the other features, including driving instruction in Las Vegas, are the same as a normal CTS-V. This special edition Cadillac isn't cheap, though. It runs $103,885. Optioning out a regular CTS-V in the same way as the Glacier Metallic model would save you roughly $6,000, and you wouldn't be missing any features. What you would miss out on would be the exclusivity. Cadillac is only building 115 CTS-Vs in this special color. So if you want to stand out -- at least as much as you can with such a subtle color -- the CTS-V Glacier Metallic Edition is the Caddy to buy. Related Video:
