1956 Fleetwood loaded with options, in beautiful factory colors, rare optional beige cloth interior (trim code 95).  52,000 original miles.  Documentation back to original owner (doctor bought the car for his wife in Nebraska in 1956).  Restored and driven daily for the past two years.  High-quality workmanship throughout.  Driven out of state on more than one occasion (picture of the car with the hood up is from at the Cadillac LaSalle Club's Grand National Meet in Florida last year).  Extremely reliable, quiet, comfortable, and in outstanding condition.  Owned and restored by expert well known in the club.  The list of things done to this car is very long.  Here is some of what has been done:

New two-tone paint work in two-stage urethane (base coat, clear coat).  Orginally delivered as all Pecos Beige from the factory, now with a 1956 Taupe top.  Body is very straight and flat.

New high-end radial tires that look like bias ply tires but handle like radials.

New shocks, springs, king pins, etc.  Thicker front anti-sway bar for better handling with no degradation in ride quality.  Steering link redone, new idler arm.

New brakes,  including new stainless steel lines, new rubber hoses, new shoes, new wheel cylinders, master cylinder and vacuum booster restored and rebuilt by White Post Restorations in VA.

Top end of engine done (new valves and guides, refurbished rockers), all leaks stopped (including new dynamic rubber lip rear main seal), engine detailed.  When we did the valve job and removed the heads, the engine still had the original Cadillac head gaskets with Cadillac part numbers stamped in them, not aftermarket ones, supporting the original mileage claim (original head gaskets still in the trunk).  Bottom of engine has never been apart (other than to overhaul the oil pump, replace the pan gasket, and replace the rear main seal).

Rebuilt power steering pump, new lines.  New ignition, including dual point distributor plate, GM-coded plug wires, plugs, coil, etc.  Rebuilt and restored fuel pump (for show -- fuel is reliably supplied from the rear with an electric fuel pump wired through a relay and a crash sensor to turn off fuel supply in event of a crash).  Fuel lines replaced with factory correct items (stainless supply line from tank, new rubber hose between supply line to pump, new stainless line from pump to carb).  Radiator re-cored, new (not rebuilt) water pump, new thermostat and all hoses.  New exhaust system, exhaust manifolds restored.

Saber alloy wheels (painted gold, not gold-anodized).  Includes original wheels and gorgeous 1956 wheel covers with new medallions).

New tail lenses, back up lenses, gaskets.  New rear window gasket.  Front window gasket re-sealed.  New door "fuzzzies" and window channels installed in three of the four doors.  All doors lined with new sound-deadener.  Floors also with new sound deadener and new carpet (but nicer carpet is on the long-range plan).  Door garnish moldings repainted proper "Beige Metallic" (gold).  Headlight doors restored (the little fake grills painted as per factory).

Electric antenna rebuilt and functional.  Radio plays and seeks properly, with optional rear speaker and working remote control foot switch for changing stations without taking one's hands off the wheel.  Rebuilt heater cores -- heater and defroster work correctly.  All electric windows work correctly.  Speedo and odometer work perfectly.  Idiot lights work.  Temp gauge works fine.  Gas gauge is temperamental even though new sender unit is installed (I have recently obtained a NOS fuel gauge to replace the one presently in the dash).  Clock is inop (long-term plan is to convert to quartz movement).  Autronic Eye is inop, but high beams and low beams are easily controlled with foot switch.

Air conditioning has worked very, very well for the past two years, but must have a slow leak as the R12 is out.  So the AC needs to be recharged.  AC blowers wired through relays to avoid overloading the key switch (a known problem with the 56 factory wiring).  Overall, an excellent AC system.

Front seat belts are three-point system tastefully integrated with the B-pillar.  Three lap belts in the back.  Front console (aftermarket) rests on seat and coordinates with the upholstery.  Car was reupholstered about 10 years ago and it is in very nice shape.  Headliner is original and has a nice patina.  All glass is good.  New glass in outside mirror.  Perfect dash pad.  Brand new sill plates!

New battery, new high-quality battery box from McVey's, new cables, rebuilt generator, new regulator, etc.  Wiper motor rebuilt by Ficken -- wipers work well.  Fuel tank cleaned out and coated inside (epoxy).  Transmission sealed (no leaks) and works well.  New proper hood pad installed correctly and underside of hood painted proper semi-gloss black.  Various engine components painted the correct semi-gloss black or Cadillac engine blue (and some are powder coated for improved durability of the finishes).  Proper decals in the right places.

Excellent original chrome, stainless, gold (some redone, but most still shiny and original).  New front emblem several years ago.

All lights, horns, etc work correctly.  Car rides and drives exceptionally well.  Starts instantly EVERY TIME, hot or cold.  Overall, just a great car that can be (and is) driven daily.  Sort of a "show-driver".  Reliable enough for any use, drive anywhere with confidence. Fly in, drive it home!

Why we can't have better headlights here in the U.S.

Tue, Mar 13 2018

It wouldn't be a European auto show if we weren't teased with at least one mainstream vehicle we can't have here. At the Geneva Motor Show last week, the small but vocal contingent of shooting-brake buffs lamented that the Mazda6 wagon won't be coming to our shores, although they can take comfort in the fact that the vehicle won't get the torquey 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine we'll get here. Mercedes-Benz also announced a new headlight technology in Geneva that likely won't be available here anytime soon. It's just the latest in a long line of innovative and potentially lifesaving front-lighting solutions that the federal government doesn't allow in this country due to outdated standards — and a current lack of leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mercedes-Benz's new Digital Light system that debuted in Geneva uses a computer chip to activate more than a million micro-reflectors to better illuminate the road ahead. The Digital Light headlamps works with the vehicle's cameras, sensors and navigation mapping to adjust lighting for the given location and situation and to detect other road users. The Digital Light technology also serves as an extended head-up display of sorts by projecting symbols on the pavement ahead to alert drivers to, say, slippery conditions or pedestrians in the road. And it can even project lines on the road in a construction zone or through tight curves to show the driver the correct path. Digital Light will be available on Mercedes-Maybach vehicles later this year, although like any technology it's bound to trickle down to less expensive vehicles. That is, if we ever get it here in the U.S. Audi, a leader in automotive lighting, has repeatedly run into snags trying to bring state-of-the-art car headlights to the U.S. The German luxury automaker's recently introduced matrix laser headlight system, which performs many of the same trick as Mercedes-Benz's Digital Light, also isn't legal on U.S. roads. And five years after the introduction of its matrix-beam LED lighting, which illuminates more of the road without blinding oncoming motorists with brights by simultaneously operating high and low beams, Audi still can't bring that technology to the U.S. either.

Cadillac to augment dealers with 700 'boutique' stores

Thu, Jan 22 2015

Johan de Nysschen is on a mission to revitalize Cadillac. Since taking over as chief executive of the American luxury brand, the former Audi and Infiniti exec has set about moving the brand's headquarters to New York, switched advertising firms, launched a completely new naming scheme for its model line, and has a whole raft of new products planned. And now he's working on changing how its dealer network operates. Speaking at both the Washington Auto Show and the NADA dealers' convention in San Francisco this week, de Nysschen has outlined a new plan for its US dealers. The network presently consists of over 900 stores – some 200 of which are stand-alone Cadillac dealers, with the remaining 700 attached to other GM brand showrooms. Contrary to earlier fears, de Nysschen notes that the dealer network is larger and covers more territory than those of import brands, and has no intention of cutting that number down. But he is asking those 700 mixed-brand dealers to create a new showroom experience for Cadillac customers. In this latest announcement, Cadillac refers to a new model of "boutique" showrooms that will encompass new technologies, higher-trained staff and luxury amenities to give those attached Cadillac showrooms a more unique feel. The plan includes installing "virtual showroom" systems that will allow potential customers to configure a new car using interactive displays and "potentially even holograms." The plan also calls for "new standards for compensation... with more precise alignment of local sales and potential for each dealer" in order to make sure that the requisite investment in the infrastructure and staff training are worthwhile for the dealers. Just what form these new systems will take, we don't know at this point. Nor are we sure why Cadillac isn't including its 200 stand-alone "flagship" dealers in the initiative. But we're sure we'll be finding out more about de Nysschen's plans on the dealer front in due course. Cadillac Discusses U.S. Dealer Network Development 2015-01-22 WASHINGTON, D.C. – As part of Cadillac's overall mission to expand and elevate within the premium automotive sector, the brand today outlined its strategy to upgrade its U.S. dealer network. Speaking at both the Washington, D.C. Auto Show today, and this weekend's annual National Auto Dealers Association convention in San Francisco, Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen will outline how the brand will target enhancements in the customer experience.

Cadillac recalls ELR coupe over stability control problems

Fri, 28 Mar 2014

Cadillac is recalling about 656 2014 ELR models made between September 26, 2013 and February 14, 2014, because of a fault with the electronic stability control system. On cars without adaptive cruise control, it's possible that diagnostics could prevent the system from telling the driver if ESC is on or off.
Cadillac has a software fix ready and repairs begin on April 17. Alan Adler, General Motors' recall and legal spokesperson, tells Autoblog that only about 55 of the affected cars are in the hands of owners. The rest are either on dealer lots or still at the factory. There have been no reported injuries or crashes caused by the fault.
The correction for the stability control system involves a software recalibration of the electronic brake control module that takes around 20 minutes to perform. While they use the same platform, the Chevrolet Volt isn't involved in this recall because it "uses a different a brake control module," said Adler.
