From Cadillac's 1974 full-line brochure:
"Presenting the only luxury convertible built in America: Eldorado Convertible by Cadillac. Excitement was never more elegant--elegance was never more exciting. You can see it in the new boldness of its lines and the richness of its interior. You can feel it in the response of its 8.2 litre engine and in the superb maneuverability afforded by front-wheel drive, variable-ratio power steering and Automatic Level Control. It even converts uniquely. With an ingenious inward-folding Hideaway Top. Eldorado Convertible--a unique motoring experience."
I bought this car in 2009 from a dealer in Evansville, Indiana. It had "good bones" but was in poor cosmetic shape. I've since done lots of restoration and would say it's in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition today. It's not a show car, but it's a superb example of a '74 Eldo. It looks amazing and can be driven anywhere with confidence.
Cadillac built 6,800 Eldorado Convertibles in 1974, but this one's unique as it's covered in one of two NEW paint colors available that year, "Persian Lime Firemist." This paint option came with White Sierra grain leather seats and Lime carpet. I've NEVER seen another like it. While the 1975 and '76 model years are more common (Cadillac stopped making the Eldorado Convertible in 1976), I prefer the '74 because it has round headlights and rear fender skirts. What's consistent is the 500 cubic inch 8.2 liter V-8, the largest production V-8 EVER in a passenger car.
Convenience options on this car include:
Automatic Climate Control
Cruise Control
Power door locks
Lamp monitors
Firemist paint
AM/FM radio with tape
Twilight Sentinel
Outside thermometer
EXTERIOR CONDITION: Excellent
I had the car repainted in 2010 to match the original green color including the hard boot and white pinstripe. The chrome is shiny and the glass clear and crack-free. The white vynil top was replaced before I bought it and is like new. No rust or rot problems underneath. The chrome strip and ornament on the hood have some minor pitting. The weather stripping around the windshield should be replaced.
INTERIOR CONDITION: Excellent
I had the seats recovered with vynil in 2010 to match the original white color and pattern (including the door panels). I also had the carpet replaced to match the original green color (including the door panels and litter bin). There's a crack in the center of the dash and the plastic seat backs show some wear.
MECHANICAL CONDITION: Excellent
This car fires right up, runs strong, and shifts smooth. It's whisper quiet and rides like a cloud. The convertible top, power windows, door locks, and antenna, radio, and all interior and exterior lights work as they should. The cigarette lighters, electic clock, and outside thermometer do not work (typical). The rear windows can only be operated from the driver's door. I was told the air conditioning and cruise control both work but chose not to hook them up (not necessary). The tires have an average of about 50% tread left.
Since buying it, I've had the following work done on this car by Cadillac specialists:
Replaced heater hose
Replaced water control valve
Replaced vacuum advance
Replaced antenna relay
Serviced brakes
Replaced dash bulbs
Replaced rear speakers
Replaced fuel lines
Replaced thermostat
Replaced radiator cap/gasket
Replaced muffler
Replaced resonator
Replaced tail pipe
Recovered seats and door panels
Replaced carpet
Repainted exterior
Replaced battery
Cleaned carburetor
Replaced head gasket
Replaced front shocks
Replaced various light bulbs and fuses
Replaced all fluids

11 vehicles from Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas worth watching
Fri, 26 Sep 2014This weekend will see the world's collector car crowds descend on Las Vegas, NV for one of the biggest shows on Barrett-Jackson's popular auction circuit. There are hundreds of vehicles up for bidding, ranging from a brand-new Lamborghini Aventador to a spattering of Art Deco classics and a huge swath of classic muscle cars.
While it's virtually impossible to assemble an inarguable list of the best cars coming during the three-day, 700-plus vehicle auction, we've sifted through the listings for this year's show - it was a tough assignment, we promise - and assembled a list of what we think will be some of the most interesting lots. We'll admit, it's a bit heavy on American iron, but if you browse BJ's listings, you'll come to a similar conclusion. Still, scroll down for our list of what we think will be the most interesting vehicles at the upcoming auction.

Cadillac planning its own engines, halo cars
Tue, 30 Sep 2014Cadillac is in the midst of some big changes. It's got a new chief executive. It's taking some distance from parent company General Motors and moving to a new headquarters in New York. And it's instituting a new naming scheme that will allow not only for a more clear progression in its lineup, but also for more models. But that's not the end of the story. Not by a long shot.
Speaking with Automobile magazine, Cadillac's new president Johan de Nysschen revealed his intention to develop several new models and powertrains. For starters, he does not want Cadillac to continue borrowing engines from the GM parts bin, but intends to develop a new range of engines specifically for the luxury automaker. The program will likely start with smaller-capacity engines but eventually lead to new V8s as well, taking the place of the long-serving Northstar engine that finally ended its lifespan a few years ago after some two decades of production. Along with other technologies, de Nysschen envisions possibly sharing these powertrains with other GM divisions, but developing them first and foremost for Cadillac.
The bigger question, however, is where those engines would go, and de Nysschen had some thoughts to share on that front as well. For starters, the former Infiniti and Audi exec sees room for an even bigger sedan above the upcoming new CT6 that will cap the current range. Maybe even two of them. But that's not all. Johan wants to see Cadillac get (back) into the sports car game with a new halo model or two - something it hasn't really done since the Corvette-based XLR roadster. A pair of new crossovers are also said to be in the works, flanking the SRX on both sides with smaller and larger models.
