1987 Cadillac Allante Convertible on 2040-cars
Knoxville, Tennessee, United States
This 1987 Cadillac Allante 2 seater convertible is a unique first year production model of the Italian designed luxury car in very good condition with both the aluminum removable hard-top as shown in pictures and also a black canvas soft-top. I've enjoyed this for over 11 years, but now I've got to pass this beauty on to the next owner to help pay for my son's college and let someone else enjoy it.
The Allante is a 2-door, two-seater roadster manufactured from 1987-1993 with approximately 21,000 built during those 7 years. 3,363 where made in the first year and only a couple hundred made in this Gold color (I think 224). It has a 4.1 liter V8 engine (170HP), 4 speed automatic transmission with front wheel drive. The body was designed and built by Italian designer Pininfarina (Yes, this is the same designer of the Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls Royce and other luxury cars). The Allante is noted for its unique production -- the bodies were produced in Turin Italy by Pininfarina and then flown to Detroit on custom made 747's where Cadillac installed the power train. This was known as the "world's longest assembly line." It has an independent strut based suspension on the front and rear and Bosch ABS four-wheel disc brakes -- it handles and drives like a dream. You can't believe how it handles corners. In 1987, a new Allante cost about $55,000 (Adjusted for inflation, that's about $113,000 in today's dollars). I've owned this Allante for 11 years and it has been a fun drive and very reliable, it's time for me to move on. The car is gold on the outside and saddle tan on the inside. It has about 91,900 miles as of the time of this posting. When I purchased it in January 2003, it had 71,000 miles - I've averaged about 2000 miles per year. I am the third owner. First owner was a doctor from St. Louis, then his son's. I purchased it from a couple in Illinois in 2003. I had it in Green Bay, WI and it was ALWAYS garage stored and never driven during the winter/snow. I'm now in Knoxville, TN and drive it a couple days a week to work in nice weather. The car is very reliable and I just put brand new tires on it in November and a new battery in March. During the 11 years, I've had periodic maintenance performed. I've replaced the radiator, brake job, transmission flush, ABS accumulator, AC recharge and normal maintenance. Other than what's listed below everything works - all the electronics, heating, air conditioning, memory seats, windows, etc. with the exception of the windshield washer. The Drivers Information Council (DIC) provides unique access to a lot of detailed information about diagnostics of the car and I have two copies of the detailed service manuals for the 1987 Allante. If you like to "play around" with this kind of stuff, you can have access to a lot of information about the car. Also, the service manuals are helpful if you want to do any maintenance. Over the years, I have also collected a number of Allante memorabilia items as you can see in the pictures: Magazine articles, hot wheels, the detailed maintenance manuals (I have two of them), original marketing material, VHS training tapes for Cadillac dealers. I also have some miscellaneous spare parts: Visors, wheel hub covers, shift handle, rear view mirror and a nice car cover. All of this is included of purchased at the reserve price. This is a 27 year old car and has some normal wearing, but is relatively minor. Here is a list of the issues. The clear coat is beginning to fade on the hood as you can see in the pictures. I get a periodic message there is low-coolant level for a few minutes, but level is fine. It does not have the original Bose speakers. One of the previous owners replaced them with an amplifier and regular speakers. Also, the tape deck doesn't work and the window washer fluid sprayer for the windshield and headlights (yes headlights) doesn't work. Periodically, some seat position and window buttons intermittently don't work, but it is intermittent and after exercising, they work. Overall a very fun and peppy car to drive and a very good looking car. Just time to move on. |

GM considering new powertrain options for large SUVs
Tue, 15 Oct 2013Aside from the new General Motors offerings, there's not a whole lot of action going on in the fullsize SUV segment. That doesn't seem to be stopping GM from pushing the envelope in the market as Automotive News is reporting that the automaker is looking to introduce some new powertrain options into the Chevy Tahoe (and Suburban), GMC Yukon (and Yukon XL) and the Cadillac Escalade - all have been redesigned for the 2015 model year.
Now, we already know that GM and Ford are collaborating on nine- and ten-speed transmissions for a broad range of applications (including the big SUVs), but this new report says that GM is also considering other options as a way to one-up the competition and, of course, to optimize fuel economy. AN quotes Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for GM trucks, as saying that "interesting powertrain technologies" are coming including a return of a hybrid SUV and possibly even a diesel engine. Although it sounds like the latter could come down to how customers respond to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel.
Cadillac ELR getting massive discounts, some up to $14,000
Mon, Jul 14 2014Well, that didn't go as planned. General Motors had marketed the Cadillac ELR extended-range plug-in as a premium version of the Chevrolet Volt with some Caddy refinements. Now, it looks like that premium, at least from a price standpoint, is shrinking. Shoppers in a number of states are reporting that GM and its dealers are discounting the ELR in order to move more off dealer lots. The issue is that few people are biting at the official price tag of about $76,000, so GM has started offering as much as $8,000 worth of dealer and customer incentives, Transport Evolved reports. More recently, dealers in states such as Florida, Texas and Maryland are offering discounts in the $12,000-to-$14,000 range, and that's before any federal and state plug-in incentives kick in. It's not difficult to guess why. Through the first half of the year, GM sold fewer than 400 ELRs. Last month, Caddy moved just 97 units, or about as many as Tesla sells of its Model S in a day. Perpahs recent spy shots that reveal a test ELR that appears to up the sportiness quotient, with touches such as larger wheels and brakes, will also help sales. Check out Autoblog's "First Drive" impressions of the ELR here.
2016 Cadillac CTS-V prepares to kick ass, take names
Tue, Jan 13 2015Some stories write themselves. This post on the North American International Auto Show debut of the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is one of them. This 200-mile-per-hour sedan pilfers the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 from the Chevy Corvette Z06, and puts it to the same tire-devastating effect, offering up 640 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic – please join us in a moment of silence for the dearly departed manual CTS-V – then dispatches the force-induced thrust to a very large, sticky set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. To ensure the CTS-V can tear your face off with lateral Gs as well as accelerative Gs, Cadillac stiffened the car's structure by 25 percent, fitted magnetic ride control and fitted the aforementioned tires. Beyond the mechanicals, a substantial rear spoiler, front splitter and diffuser improve grip through aerodynamics. Keeping drivers pinned during all this tire shredding and face tearing is the task of meaty, two-piece Recaro sport seats, which are found in a luxuriously appointed cabin, complete with 4G LTE connectivity, a Bose stereo and Siri Eyes Free. There's even a Performance Data Recorder, which will be on hand to record your miscues if (or perhaps when) the car's extreme abilities outpace your own talents. Take a look at our array of live images from the CTS-V's official debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.
