GS 455

Offered for sale is the Buick seen below. We took this car in trade on a new Mustang. It is a real GS 455 car originally from Alabama. Car was originally built at the Kansas City plant. Optioned with seamist green exterior, green vinyl roof and black bucket seats. Sold new at Grady Buick in Mobile Alabama. The original owner was a Alabama state trooper. The original owner kept the car for 34 years then the second owner purchased and moved the car to Indianapolis.

The gentleman in Indianapolis originally bought the car because his son was interested in a car to take to the strip. In 2004 it was taken to Indy Speed Custom and restoration shop. There they spent over $8,000 going over the car and making necessary repairs. You can see the bill below. It was then taken to the Tin Ranch where it was repainted the original seamist green while retaining the original vinyl roof.  You can also see some photos of the car while being prepped below.

In 2005 the GS 455 began its transformation to Stage 1 style specs. Over the next 3 years the engine was pulled, rebuilt and upgraded. All of the work was completed at Mikar Automotive Shop in Carmel Indiana. Not only was the engine upgraded with TA performance roller rockers, TA040 forged pistons, TA red Buick Stage 1 valve covers, Edelbrock performance Carb, Edelbrock performance manifold, there were many other upgrades which included ceramic coated satin black Stage 2 headers, Flowmaster Force II exhaust, Tie rods and center links and idler arms replaced, new radiator, trans upgrades, fuel pump upgrades, new alternator, thermostats, belts, engine mounts, fuel lines, tires, trans lines, wheel cylinders, upgraded gauges, power brake booster and much more. Again you can see the bill and the details below. These upgrades came to a total of over $26,000! It took from September of 2004 to June of 2006.

Shortly before the car was traded to us the previous owner had noticed the car had developed a noise in the motor. The oil pump had failed. The engine was removed, the came shaft was sent and repaired, the main bearings where replaced, the oil pump was rebuilt, the distributer gear was replaced and iginition wires were replaced at a total cost of $4,000.

This is a real factory GS 455 that comes with Sloan documentation. Car runs very strong. It is a pleasure to drive. I had the a/c gone through and it blows cold but the drivers side vent does not work. It needs the vent tube replaced but we can’t find one to put in it. The rest of the interior is very nice but it does have a couple of minor splits in the rear seat at the seems you can see pictured below. The factory radio is in the car but it does not work.

The exterior is very nice but under close inspection you can see some of its age. The body is very straight and solid. There is some shrinkage in the paint on both quarters I tried to show in the pics below. The vinyl top is original and shows some signs of age but is presentable. There is one small spot on lower right front fender that is starting to break out also which is pictured below.  The bumpers are the same they look but under close inspection they show their age.

Overall this is a very nice presentable car that has had a lot of money spent to get to this point. A solid number 2 much better then just a driver but not a perfect show car.

If you can make arrangements to pick up I do have some of the original parts including valve covers, exhaust manifold, intake, carb and cam shaft.

Junkyard Gem: 1992 Buick Century Woodie station wagon

Mon, Oct 9 2017

The Detroit station wagon with fake-wood exterior paneling had a good long postwar run, but minivans and — increasingly — sport utility vehicles were giving such wagons quite a beating in the showrooms by 1992. Buick was down to just two woodies by 1992; here's a discarded example of the front-wheel-drive Century, spotted in a Northern California self-service yard. Buick sold big rear-wheel-drive Roadmaster wagons with Simu-Wood™ siding through the 1996 model year, but the smaller Century was fairly plush. American car shoppers didn't insist on real-looking "wood" on their wagons, although Chrysler went much more three-dimensional with their plastic wood that did GM during this era. This one has the 3.3-liter Buick V6 engine, rated at 160 horsepower. This is not to be confused with the unrelated GM 60° V6, which was available in earlier and later Centuries. If only these seats could talk, they'd tell many tales of sibling battles and spilled fast food. Related Video:

The new Buick Regal looks like a Mazda, and we're totally cool with that

Mon, Dec 5 2016

Yes, this undisguised Opel Insignia, which will be brought here as the next Buick Regal, looks a lot like a Mazda. You can see it in the grille and headlights, especially – in fact, if you look at one of the photos with tape blocking out the badge in the middle of the winged grille, you might think this is a new Mazda6. The thing is, Mazdas look pretty darn good, so no one's complaining. And when you look at the rest of the car, there's a fair amount of originality going on. Aside from the GM-generic taillights (they look like they could fit on a Chevy, right?) the lines and details are all pretty fresh, and there are some design elements pulled from Buick's gorgeous Avista concept. A sweeping roofline leads to some healthy shoulders at the back, creating a coupe-ish profile with a very abbreviated rear deck. This appears to be a hatchback model and not the four-door sedan, but the general look should carry over. This is definitely a big improvement over the somewhat bulbous current-generation Regal, which also started life out as an Insignia. The car shown here is the Insignia OPC model, with Brembo brakes, big wheels, side skirts, and a front end with big (likely fake) intakes. It will most likely translate to a Regal GS for our market, as is the case with the current OPC and GS. The new Regal/Insignia is expected to use the same platform as the new Buick LaCrosse, which is also shared by the Chevy Malibu and Impala. They should once again be available with front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. Rumor has the Opel versions debuting at the Geneva show March, and the Buick would likely follow, possibly in New York in April. View 13 Photos And then there's the wagon. All signs point to Buick finally bringing the most practical Insignia to our market as a Regal. We got wind of a focus group testing the idea, Buick has trademarked the name Regal Tour X. That version would likely go up against the Audi Allroad in the classy, slightly lifted all-wheel-drive wagon category, basically acting as an almost-crossover for people who want a wagon but won't admit it to themselves. The Insignia wagon caught here is also an OPC, and we think it looks even more handsome than the hatch-sedan shown above. The trim piece stretching from the base of the A-pillar all the way up and back down to the tail is a nice touch in profile view, although we're not so sure about how it terminates abruptly at the taillight.

GM to idle car production at five factories as Americans continue CUV love affair

Mon, Dec 19 2016

In case you needed another reminder that Americans have fallen out of love with sedans, General Motors today announced plans to idle five factories in January in a bid to cut its inventory to 70 days. Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly ( Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Volt and Impala) and Fairfax Assembly in Kansas ( Chevy Malibu) will stop production for three weeks. Lansing Grand River ( Cadillac ATS and CTS, and Chevy Camaro) is going down for two weeks, while Lordstown, OH ( Chevy Cruze) and Bowling Green, KY ( Chevy Corvette) will go idle for a week each, Automotive News reports. GM's shutdown reflects a broader problem with the company's supply – at 847,000 vehicles, the company's supply increased unsteadily from a low of 629,000 units in January of 2016. That's more than a 25 percent increase in the past year. Citing information from Autodata, The Detroit News reports that at the end of November, GM had a 168-day supply of LaCrosses, 177 days' worth of Camaro, 170 days of Corvette, 121 days for Cruze, 119 days for ATS, 132 days for CTS, and 110 days of CT6. Meanwhile, inventory of the company's more popular vehicles is actually below the professionally accepted 60- to 70-day supply, The News reports. The Trax, Colorado pickup, and GM's full-size SUVs are sitting below 50 days and experiencing year-over-year sales increases. GM needs a rethink of its inventory levels, which is something that's apparently coming. "We're going to be responsible in managing our inventory levels," GM spokesman Jim Cain told The News. Another unnamed spokesman told Automotive News the company's day-to-day supplies would "fluctuate before moderating at year-end." But at least one analyst thinks this won't be the last time Detroit needs to stop production to level things out. "Incentives are elevated, residuals are declining, and rates are rising," Brian Johnson, an analyst with Barclays, told The News. "And while GM in particular may benefit in the months ahead from new product launches, it's important to recognize that GM's inventory is elevated at the moment, and it wouldn't surprise us if they need to announce another production cut – which could pressure the stock."
