TWO OWNER CAR ~ THIRTY EIGHT YEARS IN OUR FAMILY

1953 Buick Woodie Roadmaster Estate Wagon

 The Last Woodie !

1953  Buick

Golden Anniversary Year

50th Anniversary of Buick

the last year for an American Woodie!

This model and year was a celebration for Buick

and the culmination of what came before.

A  GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY red, white and blue Medallion, unique to 1953 Buick

is found located in the middle of the steering wheel and on the middle of the front bumper.

The original owner's manual includes the Buick Golden Anniversary Medallion on its front cover.

This was the last year for the Roadmaster Estate Wagon,

and it was the last woodie station wagon mass-produced in the United States giving it rare iconic status.

This vehicle is very rare, in it's own right and for being an unrestored survivor, a driver! She always gets an amazing amount of attention, for her originality and for iconic styling and undisputed 'station' in life as the last American Woody!

Most Buick Woodie Wagons (of which there are few to be seen) have been restored to a high degree and have sold in recent years for six figures at Auction (Goodings).

This car won first place at the prestigious Hemmings Concourse Car Show in Stratton, Vt.

as the 'Best Post War Unrestored Vehicle'

and

Hemmings Classic Car Magazine offered a feature article on this car in their January 2012 Issue, titling the article "Drive-able Dream"

(picture of article in photos included, it can be also be viewed on the Magazine website)

This particular car uniquely riding the road as an original! unrestored beauty ~ strong and sturdy, graceful and elegant ~ on the road a real head-turner getting constant thumps up greetings, always bringing a smile, at shows never failing to get attention and recognition!  The wood is in excellent condition, beautiful, smooth to the touch, protected with correct varnish.

This car has driven and shown regularly for 3 seasons, reluctantly put into storage when the snow starts to fly in New England.

She is a great picnic/tailgating car and for travel having a huge cargo capacity and bench seating for six persons.

Be proud to keep it historically true and unrestored and no worries to drive or show anywhere,

or alternatively,

restore it to all of it's ‘as new’ glory and own an extremely rare and beautiful iconic show car.

A pleasure to drive in her own right.

Our family has cherished this vehicle since 1975 when she caught our eye at the Hershey, PA, show, purchasing it from the PHILADEPHIA MOTOR CAR COMPANY which had purchased her from the original owner.

"In 1953 Buick introduced a new "Twin-Turbine" Dynaflow automatic transmission as a companion for the V-8 Engine.

Estimated to increase torque at the wheels by 10 percent, the new transmission provided faster and quieter acceleration on the road at reduced engine speeds.

The 1953 Roadmaster was the First Buick with a top speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h) since the prewar days.

Both power steering and power brakes were made standard, Air conditioning was an option, and years before many other makes, a 12-volt electrical system was adopted.

It was a limited production as there were only 670 Roadmaster Estate Wagon's produced in 1953,

this was a very uncommon vehicle then, a top of the line car,

this car is a true rarity today, designed by the GREAT HARLEY EARL !

The body was a product of Iona Manufacturing which built all Buick station wagon bodies between 1946 and 1964.

Priced at $4,031, the Estate was second in price only to the Skylark, with 670 being sold.

All of Roadmaster’s major competitors had shifted to short-stroke V-8 engines, and if Buick wanted to continue to be the paragon of longer, lower and wider, it needed one of its own.

The new engine was ready in time for 1953, Buick’s Golden Anniversary year.

Although the Buick V8 engine #322 "the Nailhead" (as it was popularly called) was nearly identical in displacement to the straight eight Straight-8 engine known as "the Fireball" ( the Nailhead with 322 versus 320 cubic inches), it was 13.5 inches (340 mm) shorter, four inches (102 mm) lower, and 180 pounds lighter, but with 188 horsepower, it was 11 percent more powerful!

The compression ratio increased from 7.50:1 to 8.50:1 and torque increased from 280 to 300 pound=feet (410 N.m).

The compact dimensions of the V-8 engine enabled Buick to reduce Roadmaster’s wheelbase by 4.75 inches (121 mm) across the line, although styling differences behind the engine cowl, apart from new V-8 emblem hubcaps, were largely nonexistent.

With its new engine the 1953 Roadmaster proved to be the first Buick with a top speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h) since the prewar days."

Buick Enspire spied for the first time, loses concept's electric powertrain

Thu, Jun 13 2019

About a year ago, Buick showed a high-performance electric crossover with wide, aggressive, curvy lines that was called the Buick Enspire. Now we have our first look at the production version. While it does seem to be styled like the crossover, it also seems to have lost its electric powertrain in favor of internal combustion. At the front of the crossover, we can clearly see it has the skinny, scowling headlights of the concept sitting high on the front fascia and flush with the hood. The main grille looks like it may be smaller, but it could also just be that the actual open section of the grille doesn't fill up the grille area of the fascia. In profile, the crossover has an attractive long nose, low roof and rising belt line. The rear shows the most change, as the rear pillars are much thicker, and the taillights don't appear to span the full width of the crossover. It's in the rear that we can also see the evidence that the Buick Enspire will actually be gasoline powered. Looking very closely under the rear bumper cover, we can see two exhaust tips turned to face the ground. Based on the size of the crossover, and the fact a Cadillac XT4 was being driven along with the prototype, the Enspire is probably using the XT4's platform, as well as its mechanical bits. That means it probably has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Power will also probably go through a nine-speed automatic to either the front wheels or all four. This prototype looks to be pretty far along, so we'll probably see the production version in about a year. Considering the Enspire's size and likely powertrain, it may even replace the similar Buick Envision. And since the Envision is Buick's worst selling crossover (unless you count the Regal TourX as one), it would be ripe for replacement.

GM issues 4 new recalls for 90k vehicles, Chevy, Buick, GMC affected

Fri, Jun 6 2014

One day after releasing an internal report that found a pattern of "incompetence and neglect" within the company, General Motors announced four more recalls that affect 89,126 vehicles. One of the recalls affects 31,520 vehicles that may contain a defect that could prevent airbags from deploying in a car accident. GM said it was aware of at least one crash in which a vehicle occupant sustained an injury because the airbags didn't deploy when they should have. The company said it was aware of other crashes that were similar in nature, but it is not yet known whether they're related to the condition, in which the shorting bar inside the driver's airbag may occasionally contact the airbag terminals. If the car and terminals are touching each other in a crash, the bags will not deploy. Vehicles from the 2012 model year are affected by the problem, and they include the Buick Verano, Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic. GM has conducted two previous recalls for this condition involving 7,116 cars. GM is also recalling 57,512 models of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2015 Silverado HD, Tahoe and Surburan, as well as the 2015 GMC Sierra HD, Yukon and Yukon XL models because their radio control modules may not work, and thus prevent certain audible safety warnings. Certain models of the 2013-2014 Chevrolet Spark and 2013 Buick Encore are being recalled for a different airbag problem, which could prevent airbags from deploying properly during a crash. And 33 2014 Chevrolet Corvettes are being recalled for yet another airbag problem, in which an internal short circuit could disable the airbags. So far in 2014, General Motors has issued 34 separate recalls that affect approximately 15.9 million vehicles – more than the company has sold in the past five years combined. GM Announces Four Recalls DETROIT – General Motors today announced three safety recalls and one non-compliance recall, all of which were reported to the NHTSA on Thursday, June 5, 2014. In all cases, customers will receive letters from GM letting them know when they can bring their vehicles into a dealership, where all repairs will be performed free of charge and courtesy transportation would be provided as needed.

The Chinese experiment | 2017 Buick Envision First Drive

Fri, Sep 23 2016

The 2017 Buick Envision is a very good five-passenger crossover. The "but" you should anticipate will come in good time. First it's worth understanding why it exists at all. Out of the ashes of GM's bankruptcy a few flowers blossomed and the carmaker is doing exceptionally well, certainly far better than Chrysler has done in the wake of its free fall into Chapter 11. But of all the surprises at GM's turnaround, Buick surely ranks highest, without question the least likely player to thrive if you only study the North American market. Look farther than our shores, to China, however, and you won't be shocked. Note that the Envision, which has been on sale in China for a year and a half, will reach about 200,000 units this year; the entire Buick portfolio in the US only totaled 223,000 cars in 2015. Not only is China Buick's primary market, but what it makes there, like the Envision, is intended for a different sort of buyer. Here, we'd call it a compact crossover. In China the Envision is a relatively large car, and the buyer there is far more likely to use it as a tall limo, or at the very least, as a big-time status statement. That buyer is also very likely to be in his or her mid-30s – the average Buick buyer in the US is getting younger, but, at 58, is hardly a millennial. Still, Americans who buy the Envision will benefit from all of this China focus. Huge effort went into its development since the target competitor in China is the Audi Q5, according to Rick Spina, Executive Chief Engineer for the Envision. Spina explained that Buick went to the trouble and expense of isolating the entire chassis from engine, suspension, and driveline vibration and sound penetration. "If you look at non-luxury models like Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, nothing's isolated, everything is hard-bolted to the body, and so all that vibration goes into the frame." Spina says that even though you'd guess the China-built Envision shares the general parts bin of the Chevy Cruze and Equinox, it's almost entirely unique. "It's kind of an orphan," he says, because GM couldn't afford to invest in the ride tuning Buick had to have to compete with Audi in China for a volume Chevy product, so nothing from Chevy (for now) is on this platform. And although it would have made sense to have Cadillac or GMC share it, Cadillac's XT5 and GMC's Acadia were already on a different development cycle. Besides, he's pretty proud that the Envision was developed strictly for Buick.
