The Buick Reatta was a hand-made luxurious sport coupe produced at
the Reatta Craft Centre in Lansing, Michigan and sold by the Buick division of
American automaker General Motors from early 1988 to 1991. Like the Cadillac
Allant?, it was based on a shortened version of the GM E platform used by the
Cadillac Eldorado, Oldsmobile Toronado and particularly the Buick Riviera, with
which it shared its advanced electronics and interior furnishings.
The Reatta sported its own unique body style and was crafted with
an attention to detail and quality of finish uncommon for a mass-produced
automobile. Initially offered as a hardtop coupe, a convertible version was
added for 1990. The Reatta used GM's ubiquitous "3800" V6 with
165–170 hp (123–127 kW) and 210–220 ft-lb (285–298 N•m) of torque with the
highest output in the last year of production. The car sported a fully
independent suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, and front wheel drive.
Top speed was electronically limited to 125 mph (201 km/h). The Reatta was
rated at 18 mpg (13.1 L/100 km) in the city and 27 mpg (8.7 L/100 km) on the
highway.
During the first two years of production, the Reatta, like its
Riviera stablemate, featured a touchscreen computer interface called the
"Electronic Control Center", or ECC. The touchscreen controlled the
radio and climate control functions and provided diagnostic access to the
vehicle's various electronic systems and sensors, mostly eliminating the need
for a diagnostic scanner. It also featured a date reminder, a trip computer, and
a user-configurable overspeed alarm.
The Reatta was conceived during a period in the early to mid-1980s
when Buick was marketing high performance editions of its vehicles (such as the
Buick GNX). However, midway through the development of the Reatta, GM decided
to refocus the brand on a more traditional and mature image that was thought to
be more in keeping with its core older buyer demographics. The resulting
vehicle had a shape that carried performance car styling cues. The shorter, lighter coupe was joined by a convertible for 1990
and 1991. These sold surprisingly poorly, and are extremely rare today. Keyless
entry was added after the first year. A driver's side airbag appeared with the
more conventional interior and the convertible in 1990.
The Reatta was intended as a halo car for Buick, but sales,
originally planned to be around 20,000 units a year, were extremely
disappointing and GM announced the end of Reatta production in early 1991.
The Production; Production is said to have begun in January of 1988 and ended on
May 14, 1991. However, various accounts of much earlier and later cars exist,
and the handbuilt nature of the car and long development cycle makes accurately
dating production difficult.

Due to my age and phisical conditions, I am selling several of my
toys, including this low mileage 1990 Buick Reatta convertible. I have put a reserve on this auction
because I’m not going to give this car away, but it is a low reserve for this
nice of a car. I will answer all questions
by e-mail or feel free to call me at 308-234-3314.
This LOW MILEAGE Reatta (99,820) has NO RUST. It was sold new in Southern California,
then spent the rest of its life in Arizona. I had the car transported to Nebraska where it has been garaged
when not driven on special occasions.
The tires are practically new (see pic) and it has COLD a/c. The top is new and is in good shape as
you can see from the pictures. Needless to say, this “high-end” Buick is loaded
with all the goodies. Power
windows, mirrors, locks, trunk release and tonneau cover. The power seats are 6-way on the driver
and passenger side. There is a
very good sounding original am/fm/tape stereo with power antenna. It has Electronic Climate Control,
digital display, and automatic overdrive.
It also has interval wipers, cruise control, tilt steering and fog
lights.
GM experimented with this hand built car from ’88 through
’91. The Reatta Craft Center was
capable of producing 50 cars per day compared to 65 per hour in other
plants. All the components of the
car, with the exception of the body panels, were shared with other mass
produced cars, so finding parts is not a problem.
The Reatta came equipped with one of the best power trains in the
industry, the 3800 engine and the THM 440 transmission. Hemmings Motor News calls the Reatta
“one of the collector’s cars of tomorrow”. Again, I will be glad to answer all your questions by
e-mail or phone. Call me. |

Junkyard Gem: 1973 Buick LeSabre Custom Hardtop Sedan
Sat, Oct 26 2019The steps on Alfred Sloan's "Ladder of Success," in which you'd start your career by buying a Chevrolet and then move up through the GM marques as your wealth increased, stayed rigidly fixed from the 1930s into the late 1960s. By the early 1970s, though, "prestige creep" among The General's divisions had set in, with lower-zoot marques leapfrogging their betters with ballooning price tags and snob appeal; a fully-loaded Chevy Caprice could cost more than an Olds 98, a Pontiac Bonneville could out-snoot a Buick LeSabre, and the LeSabre itself came to threaten mighty Cadillac at the top of the GM pyramid. Here's a fully depreciated '73 LeSabre Custom Hardtop Sedan, once the picture of Malaise Era opulence but now brought down to earth in a San Jose self-service car graveyard. The high-rollingest of all LeSabres in 1973 was the Custom (though shoppers for full-sized 1973 Buicks really wishing to rub the noses of their lessers in their success could opt for the even pricier Centurion or Electra 225), and that's what I found among the Achievas and Cateras of this yard's GM section. Wasps now nest in the rust holes caused by rainwater seeping beneath the padded vinyl roof, but this car once told the world, "I've made it!" It went without saying that your big, comfy Detroit luxury sedan had a big, comfy front bench seat; let those frivolous rakehells in their Rivieras have their bucket seats. Believe it or not, a three-on-the-tree column-shift manual transmission was still standard equipment on the lower-level Buick Century in 1973, but all LeSabre buyers enjoyed two-pedal luxury that year. Some junkyard shopper grabbed the massive 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 — rated at 225 horsepower, due to Nixon's stricter emissions standards and the switch from gross to net horsepower ratings — before I got here. I'm guessing this car got driven into the ground by the early 2000s (there's a 2001 calendar inside) and then spent the next couple of decades bleaching in the harsh South Bay sun before arriving here. So good, shoppers bought them sight unseen!
GM announces six new recalls, covering 3.5 million vehicles
Mon, 16 Jun 2014General Motors has just initiated another crushingly large recall, this time affecting some 3.36 million vehicles built between 2000 and 2014 and sold in the US, Canada and Mexico. Once again, the issue surrounds the cars' ignition switches, which can be kicked out of the run position if they're carrying extra weight or if they experience a "jarring" event. In this particular case, though, GM will modify the keys, rather than the ignition itself.
A four-by-six-millimeter hole will be drilled into the key, which will more safely accommodate the weight of the key ring. As is usually the case, the work will be done free of charge. The recalled vehicles include the 2000 to 2005 Cadillac Deville, 2004 to 2005 Buick Regal LS and GS, 2004 to 2011 Cadillac DTS, 2005 to 2009 Buick Lacrosse, 2006 to 2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2006 to 2011 Buick Lucerne and 2006 to 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Only the Impala is still in production, and even then, it's only sold to fleet companies.
According to an official statement from GM, there have been eight crashes and six injuries due to this latest issue. As if this isn't a dire enough blow for GM, the company has announced five smaller recalls, covering 165,000 vehicles.
GM SUV window switch recall urges owners to park vehicles outside
Thu, 07 Aug 2014It's not unusual for there to be a lag between an automaker announcing a recall and the official documentation showing up on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. So it's no surprise that a recent GM campaign took about a month to appear in its official capacity. However, there appears to be some big differences between the two reports with potential safety implications.
In late June, GM announced that it needed to recall 181,984 examples of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x from the 2005-2007 model years, plus the 2006 Chevy Trailblazer EXT and 2006 GMC Envoy XL. The new documents paint a slightly different picture with 184,611 needing repaired and different model years listed.
The reason for the fix is still the same, though. It's possible for fluid to contact the master power window switch module in the driver's door, which can corrode the part. Eventually this could cause a short circuit, leaving the buttons inoperable and potentially leading to a fire. But the new NHTSA documents add an important note: "A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made."
