Buick Grand National - Stage Motor on 2040-cars

Year:1984 Mileage:56000
Location:

Tolland, Connecticut, United States

Tolland, Connecticut, United States

I bought this as a stock 1984 GN about 12 years ago.  It was a clean driver with about 45,000 miles on it at the time.  About five years ago I decided to see about improving on the horsepower.  That turned into taking the car off the road for about 3 years and building it a Stage II motor.  DLS Engines did the machining and put the entire motor together.  Then I dropped the engine and the car off with Cotton's Performance to put the car together.  It's now methanol injected and an estimated (not dyno'd) 800 horsepower at the flywheel at 20 pounds of boost on 93 octane.  F.A.S.T. computer, custom fuel delivery, built 200-4R trans, 275-60-15 Mickey Thompson E/T streets, and other improvements to the engine and suspension to handle the power.  Aluminum radiator and twin electric fans along with a separate trans cooler and electric fan to keep it all from melting down.  The a/c is functional.  The car can and has spent plenty of time idling in traffic on hot summer days without any trouble.  I finally got it to the track last year and made three full-power passes after a shakedown run:  One at 11.2, the second at 10.8, and the last at 10.72 @ 132mph.  That's launching off the foot brake at about 3 pounds of boost, and I am not an experienced racer.

The engine was put together with the original intent of making over 1,000 horsepower and getting into the 9's.  But I moved, got a new job, had kids, and getting to the track clearly isn't a priority and won't be for a long time.  That's why the car sees mostly commuting duty, which is why I'm selling it:  More car than I need to drive to work and the grocery store.  You'll also notice that this post doesn't include a long list of manufacturers and specs for all the parts and pieces.  I'm not a mechanic and didn't build the car.  But I did make sure it was done with an eye towards strength and durability because I only wanted to pay to put the car together once.

The paint is original, and while it's not bad it's not impressive either.  The interior is in really good shape, with only one small tear in the drivers seat that's hardly noticeable.  The rear bumper filler was cracked and ugly before I made that 132mph pass, then one of the cracks let go and now a piece of the bumper filler is missing.  It will not win any show and shine trophies, but it will drive to the track, make consistent 10-second passes, and drive home with the a/c on and no fluids dripping from underneath.  The money was spent on making it go fast reliably, not on making it look good.

GM tells owners not to use SUV wipers due to fire risk

Sun, Oct 11 2015

General Motors is recalling 31,685 examples of the 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia because a short circuit in the windshield wiper motor can potentially lead to a fire. Due to the danger, the company is asking owners not to use the wipers until the problem is fixed, according to The Detroit Free Press citing the Associated Press. A manufacturing defect in the wiper motor cover means that the electrical terminals can come into contact and cause a short. The part could "melt, smoke, or catch fire," according to a statement from GM. The company will get them fixed immediately, and dealers will replace the cover. If there's bad weather at the time the owner specifies to get the recall work completed, the automaker will come pick up the crossovers. Depending on parts availability, the automaker will supply a rental car for customers, as well. The issue was discovered at the factory. According to the company's statement, only 6,405 actually made it to customers, and they were notified immediately by overnight letter. The rest were in dealer stock. The affected crossovers carry build dates between August 18, 2015 and September 24, 2015. Of those, there are 29,295 in the US and 1,073 in Canada. GM Statement: General Motors has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it will recall approximately 29,295 2016 model year Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia SUVs in the U.S. because the front windshield wiper motor may overheat when in use because of a manufacturing defect. In some cases, the front windshield wiper motor cover may melt, smoke or catch fire. The approximately 6,405 customers who have taken delivery of these vehicles were notified by overnight letter and are urged to contact a GM dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service appointment. These customers should not use the front windshield wipers until they have been repaired. If weather conditions prevent driving the vehicle without using the windshield wipers, GM will arrange to pick up the vehicle for servicing. If repair parts are unavailable, GM will provide a rental car at no cost until parts become available. The total population, including Canada, Mexico and exports, is approximately 31,685. About 25,280 of these vehicles are in dealer stock and will not be sold until repairs are made.

Buick celebrates 110 years by naming most significant model of each decade

Sun, 23 Jun 2013

In May of 1903, Buick began work on its first vehicle, the 1904 Model B, the first example of which was sold to a doctor in Flint, Michigan. That first sale was appropriate since later on, Buick became known as a "doctor's car." The Model B is the first of 11 cars chosen by Buick to highlight each decade of the company's 110-year history.
The 1916 D-45 Touring with a six-cylinder engine was Buick's highest seller that year, and helped push overall sales past six figures for the first time, making Buick the top-selling automotive brand. In 1931, Series 50 got an eight-cylinder engine, which helped the company survive the Great Depression. The 1936 Century was the first Buick that could hit 100 miles per hour, the 1949 Roadmaster had a supporting role in Rain Man, the 1953 Skylark had Italian wire wheels and the owner's name engraved on its steering wheel.
Then we have the iconic 1963 Riviera, the V6-powered 1975 Regal, and in 1987, the legendary GNX. With a turbocharged, intercooled V6 pumping out 276-horsepower it could hit 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. In 1999 Buick built the first car in China, the Century, and that country remains the brand's largest market.

Jay Leno recaps Pebble Beach

Wed, Sep 30 2015

Each year at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance the picturesque, ocean-side setting of the golf course becomes a parking lot for a vast array of multi-million dollar vehicles. However, if you missed the posh event this year, then Jay Leno has you covered yet again. For a nearly hour-long installment of Jay Leno's Garage, the comedian has dumped his denim in favor of a suit to take viewers on an insider tour of the lavish gathering. He interviewed some of the most talented designers in the auto industry, too. Leno starts off checking out a few beautiful classics by the shore, but things really get interesting for his stroll down the Concept Car Lawn for a scoop on the vehicles of tomorrow. Ed Welburn tells Leno all about the Buick Avenir, and Shiro Nakamura offers a tour of the Infiniti Q60. Plus, there are detailed looks at the Lincoln Continental, Hyundai Vision G Coupe, and Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6.
