Fly Low in the Grand National or Fly High, many of our photos of this GM classic were taken at the Dallas Love Field Frontiers of Flight Museum, located only minutes from our showroom.

1987 would be the final and pinnacle year of the Grand National. The base turbocharged 3.8 liter engine churned out 330 ft-lbs of torque at 2400 rpm while making 235 horsepower at only 4,000 rpms. These cars boast sub 14-second quarter mile times at over 100mph off the showroom floor. This example has some modifications. The exhaust system is custom, from a high flow downtube to free-flowing intercooler piping and dual exhaust system, all displaying beautifully throughout. It runs excellent. An aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and hi flow in-tank fuel pump are also in place.

The exterior showcases a quality black finish, the only color available for the '87 Grand National. The paint and body are in exceptional condition with a few minor chip touch-ups and an extremely straight body. Note the crack photographed above.

"The bulge in your hood will put a lump in your throat." This was a marketing line used to describe the Grand National.

The exterior has few distinguishing features in this all-business G-body Buick.

This menacing stance is partially attributed to the blacked-out factory 15-inch wheels wrapped in new B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A radials. The shocks have recently been replaced as well.

The engine compartment displays the turbo-charged 3.8 liter V6 engine in all its glory. The engine is clean and detailed. A few breathing modifications have been done along with an Accufab fuel pressure regulator installed. The intercooler charge lines are polished stainless and the turbo-charger heat shield is also polished.

GM to offer 2 years free maintance on most 2014 models

Thu, 06 Jun 2013

A day after Ford announced it was scaling back the complimentary maintenance program for its Lincoln brand, General Motors has gone in the completely opposite direction, offering most of its 2014 lineup with free maintenance. Since 2011, Cadillac models have all come with a four-year/50,000-mile complimentary maintenance program, but Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles will now come standard with free maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles for the 2014 model year.
The program will give vehicle owners and lessees free oil changes, tire rotations and 27-point inspections following the recommended maintenance schedule laid out in each vehicle's owner's manual. We contacted GM to see which vehicles were eligible for the program, and a spokesperson got back to us with the following comment:
"All 2014 models are eligible, it's just that the included services vary by model, e.g., Spark EV would not need oil changes, Corvettes don't recommend tire rotations."

Junkyard Gem: 1978 Buick Electra 225

Wed, Dec 21 2016

The Buick Electra was a big, plush, dignified land yacht for the 1959 through 1976 model years, but certain events in the middle 1970s, coupled with increasing sales of imported cars, convinced The General that a weight-loss program would help Electra sales. For the 1977 model year, the big Buick became 11 inches shorter and shed close to 900 pounds. Sales took off. Most of these cars are gone now, but I was able to find this faded '78 in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard a few weeks back. Just to be clear, the Buick Electra in the iconic Sir Mix-a-Lot video, My Hooptie, is a 1969 model. That car was much bigger and more powerful than today's Junkyard Gem. This car has the optional Oldsmobile 403-cubic-inch V8 engine under the hood, which was good for 185 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. This is the same type of engine that was badged as a 6.6-liter plant in the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am of Smokey and the Bandit fame, and GM's mix-and-match games with engines from different divisions went on to cause great disgruntlement among buyers who wanted a Buick engine in a Buick. The silver-faced gauges were pretty cool-looking by late-1970s standards. The interior is standard-issue Detroit luxury car for the era: much vinyl, many molded-in fake stitches, plenty of not-trying-very-hard-to-look-real "wood." These cars rode very comfortably and looked sharp, so who cared if the interiors were plasticky? According to Glenn Ford, the '78 Electra carried on an ancient tradition of Buick luxury. Buick Verano to go turbo-only for 2014?

Sat, 22 Dec 2012

If VIN tags recently posted online prove accurate, the 2014 Buick Verano may be getting a new base engine. Presently the Verano makes use of GM's 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine in non-turbo trim; 2014 documentation appears to indicate that GM's entry-level luxury compact will instead feature a 1.6-liter turbocharged mill.
If this is the same engine seen in Europe, GM Inside News suggests it may offer 192 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque - useful improvements over the larger naturally aspirated mill's 180 hp and 171 lb-ft. More importantly, the downsized engine would likely improve on the Verano's current fuel mileage estimates of 21 city and 31 highway.
We like the Verano in both of its current iterations, but the 1.6 turbo engine sounds like a worthwhile upgrade if this reports turns out to be true. Plus, if more performance is your bag, baby, there's always the Verano's optional 2.0 turbo engine with an impressive 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft from just 2.0 liters of displacement.
