1986 Buick Grand National on 2040-cars
Fort Worth, Texas, United States
1986 Buick Grand National. Purchased from original owner 3 years ago for me to enjoy as I always loved these cars. Once I got it off the car hauler, I noticed the paint was great from 25 feet, not so much up close. And that is when I decided it needed a good restoration. Car was not bad when purchased, just a 25 year old car and needed some updating. Original owner never raced this car or modified it in any way. It was completely stock in every way. Since the purchase, I have had the car professionally stripped down and repainted due to that horrible water based paint they used in the 80's. I sent the car to a local GN specialist who stripped it down and repainted it with a good base/clear paintjob. Car is extremely straight and looks GREAT! All new weatherstipping, body bushings, GNX wheel and tires from OER with less than 1k miles, all suspension and springs were replaced by GM dealer with OEM parts when original owner had it not very long before I bought it - sits perfectly and rides great! Inside has dynamat installed on floor and inside doors before new carpet and panels were placed back on. New OEM style interior fabric on all seats, new seat belt fabric, new headliner and everything else inside the car. Looks great! Engine was rebuilt by same guy who specializes in Turbo GM cars using all ARP fasteners and the very best bearings, rings, pistons (forged) and gaskets. We did replace factory hydraulic flat tappet cam with billet roller cam and matching lifters. Also installed roller rockers. Stock exhaust manifold (shorty headers) were ceramic coated and polished and resurfaced for better mounting and decrease possibility of leaks. Turbo housing and intake manifolds were also ceramic coated and polished to match. Turbo is a replacement turbo from Precision and it does have a ceramic coated and polished 3' downpipe breathing through a stainless FULL THROTTLE 3" exhaust system all the way back. Really nice exhaust system from turbo and manifolds (headers) all the way back out the back. I do have the stock turbo in the Precision box to put back stock, if needed. I also installed a front mount Eastern Performance intercooler that is MUCH MORE efficient than the original style. Intercooler was ceramic coated then powder coated black to hide it and the inlet pipes are all ceramic coated polished to match everything else. It is a bolt in and I do have the original and all brackets just in case. Radiator is an aftermarket aluminum radiator with huge dual fans that keeps this car running really cool at all times. Replaced the original because it was beyond repair with build up and new ones were plastic. I did not want a plastic radiator on this car! It was plug and go with no modifications needed. I do not have the original radiator as it was garbage. Injectors were also replaced from Precision to match the turbo. All new, very good hoses (all silicon or race quality) on turbo inlets pipes, intercooler, heater hoses, radiator hoses, etc. All brackets powder coated. The engine bay of this car including the engine is simply beautiful. Transmission was rebuilt by someone who specializes in the 200R4 and shifts great!. Upgraded the braking system to the 1984-1985 hydroboost and got rid of that horrible power master system. I still have the power master from the car along with the factory air cleaner box. I only upgraded the items I felt could improve the drivability and efficiency of this car since technology is a little better today than it was 26 years ago! I made sure not to "butcher" anything so it could go back 100% original with the turn of a few wrenches. Everything was matched up and given weeks or months of thought and planning before anything was purchased or installed. Car is a blast to drive and runs great! A solid 9 on a 1-10 scale. Car is and has always been kept inside and has never had any rust. More recent pics are available upon request. The ones shown still shows a few items that were replaced and refinished such as the t-top moldings and a new steering wheel was installed (the old one was discolored on the center, metal sections). These pics were taken a few months after car was painted and it still hasn't been color sanded and polished. It looks that good! Car is going for those final touches later this week. Has less than 200 miles on the car since restoration. Only selling because wife wants to move and I have my eye on an even more rare car. Very solid and well kept 1986 GN. Will make someone a VERY nice car to enjoy and these are getting harder and harder to find and are only going up in value. |

eBay Find Of The Day: 1946 Tucker Torpedo Prototype II hides a secret Riviera
Thu, 10 Jul 2014The Tucker Torpedo is one of the great what-if stories of automotive history. Preston Tucker hoped to revolutionize the industry with a car unlike any other on the road at the time. However, due to a variety of problems, he only managed build 51 vehicles before closing shop. Over time, they have become highly sought-after; In 2012, one sold for $2.65 million at auction.
That brings us to this Tucker "replica" that you see above because it might be one of the ugliest monstrosities ever put together. However, we might extend some leniency to the creator, as the vehicle isn't actually trying to replicate the classic look of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Instead, it is attempting to reproduce an earlier prototype from 1946 that actually features that weird, trident nose. According to the seller, his uncle built the car as a labor of love and supposedly used actual plans from Tucker as inspiration.
Underneath all of the crazy changes is a 1971 Buick Riviera powered by a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Buick V8. Some of the replica's odder modifications include the front fenders that turn with the wheels and the fin running down the back. All three headlights work, but the one in the middle is only for the high beams. Oddly, the small hinged sections on the roof are meant to open to avoid hitting your head when getting in or out. Maybe the seller's uncle was a very tall guy?
GM mulling Chevy Cruze hatchback for US, Buick 'Panamera' among other new models
Fri, 08 Nov 2013We've spoken at length previously about the fallacy of poor hatchback sales in the US, and with the runaway success of its Chevrolet Cruze sedan, it's somewhat unsurprising to hear that General Motors is rethinking its decision not to sell an overseas five-door variant in North America as it looks to plug a number of holes in its lineup. GM North American President Mark Reuss admitted during a media luncheon this week that not offering the model "... was a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake," says Forbes. With the next-generation model already well-along in development, it's likely that the current Cruze hatch (shown above) won't see US dealers.
Reuss admits not offering the model "was a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake"
In what must have been a far-reaching conversation, Reuss hinted at a number of new products for many GM brands, including "a much more beautiful Panamera" range-topper for Buick (which sounds a bit like the line of reasoning the TriShield brand has been pursuing with its Riviera concepts) and a "Ford Transit Connect-fighter" to supplant the recently announced badge-engineered Chevy City Express from Nissan.
Consumer Reports says infotainment systems 'growing first-year reliability plague'
Mon, 27 Oct 2014The Consumer Reports Annual Auto Reliability Survey (right) is out, and the top two spots look much the same as last year's list with Lexus and Toyota in first and second place, respectively. However, there are some major shakeups for 2014, with Acura plunging eight spots from third in 2013 to 11th this year, and Mazda replaces it on the lowest step of the podium. Honda and Audi round out the top five. This year's list includes six Japanese brands in the top 10, two Europeans, one America and one Korean.
Acura isn't the only one taking a tumble, though. Infiniti is the biggest loser this year by dropping 14 spots to 20th place. Other big losses come from Mercedes-Benz with an 11-place fall to 24th, and GMC, which declines 10 positions to 19th.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's not traditional mechanical bugs hauling down these automaker's reliability scores. Instead, pesky problems with infotainment systems are taking a series toll on the rankings. According to Consumer Reports, complaints about "in-car electronics" were the most grumbled about element in new cars. Problem areas included things like unresponsive touchscreens, issues pairing phones and multi-use controllers that refused to work right.
