2018 Buick LaCrosse Avenir gets dash of flash

The 2018 Buick LaCrosse Avenir continues the rollout of the top-trim Avenir line, joining the Enclave. They use the same strategy: package some extra features as standard and give the vehicles more design flair. On the outside, the LaCrosse Avenir gets shiny chrome mesh grilles and Avenir badging, just like the Enclave. Two types of wheels are available on the LaCrosse, either 19-inch pieces finished in "Pearl Nickel" or 20-inch versions finished in "Midnight Silver." Inside, there is exclusive chestnut brown leather interior. The Avenir logo is stitched into the headrests of the seats and is displayed on the door sill plates. Aside from the visual tweaks, the Avenir trim adds a bunch of standard features. Among the convenience items are navigation, a sunroof and a Bose sound system. It also features the nine-speed automatic transmission hooked up to the 310-horsepower V6. But items such as the trick all-wheel-drive system and continuously adjustable suspension are still options. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but expect it to be more than the $42,090 of the next highest-trim LaCrosse Premium with the V6. And Buick expects it will sell plenty of these cars, since it also revealed that 90 percent of LaCrosse buyers choose the top two trims out of the four available. GM recalls 64k 2011-2013 Volts over carbon monoxide fears, stop sale on Trax and Encore

General Motors is recalling 50,249 Chevrolet Volts from the 2011-2013 model years in the US and an additional 13,937 exported examples because of fears over carbon monoxide buildup. According to a statement, if a Volt is accidentally left on while running on electric power, its internal combustion engine would eventually kick on to charge on the battery. If this happens in an enclosed space, then carbon monoxide can fill the area, leading to a potential exposure to the dangerous gas. According to GM, there have been two injuries reported due to this issue. To fix the problem, there's a software update to limit the time the vehicle can idle. According to Automotive News, GM is also issuing a stop sale on about 2,300 examples of the 2015 Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore. In these compact crossovers, it's possible that the steering column assembly could touch the power steering circuit board and cause damage over time. This could potentially cause the system to stop working. Automotive News indicates that the automaker is still working with the supplier to get the necessary parts to repair this problem. If a driver exits the vehicle and inadvertently leaves the vehicle "on" by failing to react to cues and warning chimes emitted by the vehicle, the vehicle's high-voltage battery will drain after a period of time and the gasoline engine will begin to run. If the gas engine runs for a long period of time within an enclosed space, such as a garage, carbon monoxide could build up. GM is aware of two injuries, both related to carbon monoxide build up. GM cutting Chevy Sonic, Buick Verano production [UPDATE]

UPDATE: A previous version of this story indicated that Orion Assembly would be idled for seven weeks, from February 16 through April 6. This was incorrect. The factory will instead only be idled for the weeks of February 16 and April 6. The story has been edited to reflect this. General Motors has announced that the factory responsible for the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Sonic will be idled for the weeks of February 16 and April 6, with blame being placed on excess supply. The Orion Assembly plant, about 45 minutes north of GM's Renaissance Center headquarters, employs about 1,800 people, but they'll be given a pair of furloughs as inventories of the sub-compact Sonic and premium compact Verano reach 127 days and 84 days, respectively. That works out to 26,600 Chevys and 9,800 Buicks waiting for buyers. According to Automotive News, the compact Chevy sales bested the industry average in 2014, jumping up nine percent versus the the overall segment's eight-percent gain, while the Buick sedan's sales were down four percent. When asked about the shutdown, a GM spokesman told AN that it will "build to market demand," while also pointing out that the company did not comment on production plans.
