This is a real great survivor car. It was donated to a charity and had been sitting for years. They couldn't start it, so they sold it as-is. I put some fuel in it and it started right up. The car is in remarkable condition. It has 51,000 and change miles and it runs and drives like it was new. There are no squeaks or rattles. The steering and ride are both amazing. I am a little embarrassed that I like this so much. There is no restoration that can match a factory ride. These cars are built like tanks with a full steel frame and bumpers that can actually bump something. I see no evidence of the car ever having been smoked in and the whole interior is very clean. I had the front seat reupholstered as there were a couple of splits in the seams. It shows very nicely. The carpet is clean with no wear spots and I think it has the factory mats that are in good shape. I put a set of chrome wheels on it as the originals were quite dry rotted and if the auction meets my reserve, I will install a new set of premium radials with the factory hubcaps back on it.

The engine runs very well, but there are still remnants of old smelly fuel still lingering. This is a Buick that actually has a Buick engine. This is the 350 four barrel with a turbo 350 automatic transmission. Very reliable and if you drive it right you can get 17 or 18 miles per gallon. It will run well on regular pump gas. I replaced the water pump, it wasn't leaking, but the hose connection was crudded up. I installed new spark plug wires, air filter, changed the oil, greased the chassis and performed the usual minor maintenance issues. I checked all of the lights, changed the wiper blades and just cleaned up the car in general. I found nothing out of order on the car, it was just parked ten or fifteen years ago and driven very little. As you can see I didn't detail the motor. I don't want to hide anything. The car is what it is, an honest, solid, unmolested 38 year old car. It will make great transportation or you can shine it up and go to shows.

I repaired the fillers around the rear tail lights. They are going to stay together for now, but a new set would really be nice. I guess this is a pretty common problem for these 70's cars. There are two rust spots, one at the bottom of the trunk drop and the other about the size of a half dollar over the wheel opening. These must be from something spilled in the trunk because there is zero rust anywhere else on the car. All of the glass is good and the weather stripping is quiet. The windows don't wiggle around and everything about the car is tight as a tick. The doors shut like a vault. The only nagging thing to me is a crack in the top of the dash. A dash mat will cover it completely. This has the original scratchy AM radio, tilt wheel, A/C, power steering and brakes, and it all seems to be in good shape.

I don't know how popular these cars are. There are not a lot of them around that haven't been driven into the ground. I bought it as a donor for my '39 Buick, but I don't have the heart to cut it up. I am offering it for sale with a modest reserve. The usual E-bay rules apply, no Nigerian Princes, No third part Armenian Checks, all funds must clear my bank before the car leaves my possession. I can arrange shipping anywhere. I am selling this to get more room, so if it is not picked up in 30 days it will have to go to commercial storage. Because of the age I must sell it as-is. I have a clear Arizona title and it is registered for about 4 more years.

U.S. denies GM tariff relief request for China-made Buick SUV

Wed, Jun 5 2019

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has denied a General Motors Co request for an exemption to a 25 percent U.S. tariff on its Chinese-made Buick Envision sport utility vehicle. The denial of the nearly year-old petition came in a May 29 letter from the U.S. Trade Representative's office saying the request concerns "a product strategically important or related to 'Made in China 2025' or other Chinese industrial programs." The midsize SUV, priced starting at about $35,000, has become a target for critics of Chinese-made goods, including leaders of the United Auto Workers union and members in key political swing states such as Michigan and Ohio. GM said on Tuesday it was aware of the denial and has been paying the tariff since July. GM has not raised the sticker price to account for the tariff. Buick Envision sales fell in the United States by nearly 27% to 30,000 last year and fell another 21% in the first three months of 2019. Only a small number of vehicles are built in China and sold in the United States. Last month, the U.S. Trade Representative's Office also denied a request by Chinese-owned Volvo Cars for tariff exemptions for mid-size SUVs assembled in China after the automaker sought an exemption for the XC60, its top selling U.S. vehicle. GM, the largest U.S. automaker, argued in its request that Envision sales in China and the United States would generate funds "to invest in our U.S. manufacturing facilities and to develop the next generation of automotive technology in the United States." GM said last year the "vast majority" of Envisions, about 200,000 a year, are sold in China. Because of the lower U.S. sales volume, "assembly in our home market is not an option" for the Envision, which competes with such mid-size crossover vehicles as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Cadillac XT5. Ahead of the July 2018 start for higher import tariffs, GM shipped in a six-month supply of Envisions at the much lower 2.5 percent tariff rate, Reuters reported in August 2018.

Next-gen LaCrosse, Cascada convertible coming to Buick showrooms in 2016

Thu, Jul 24 2014

It's difficult to overstate how significant the post-bankruptcy years have been for General Motors' Buick brand. Arguably the most improved American automaker, Buick has rounded out its range with an excellent compact in the Verano, a well-balanced midsizer in the Regal and a segment-busting mini-CUV, with the Encore. Seeking to keep that momentum going, the next several years will see the brand address a trio of its most obvious issues. First and foremost will be a replacement for the aging LaCrosse, a vehicle whose only bit of attention since its 2009 debut was a very light refresh in 2013. According to Automotive News, we should expect the next-generation LaCrosse to arrive late next year or early in 2016, as a 2016 model. AN expects big design changes, as Buick attempts to further the LaCrosse from its popular platform-mate, the Chevrolet Impala. The changes won't be so radical, though, as to do away with its front-drive architecture, as the latest version of the Epsilon platform will underpin the next LaCrosse. The 3.6-liter V6 is likely to carry on, although a smaller, budget-minded offering is also extremely likely (we'll eat our hat if it's not the 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder from the Regal, Verano and Cadillac CTS et al.). The other issue plaguing Buick's lineup is a lack of a midsize crossover. This is particularly damning for the brand as most of its showrooms are shared with GMC, which boasts its own midsizer in the form of the Terrain. With the upcoming Envision (see here for teasers), that problem should be addressed. Like the LaCrosse, the Envision will likely be a 2016 model. It will debut and launch in China early next year, while we can expect it to arrive stateside later next year, or even early in 2016. For American consumers, both a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and the aforementioned 2.0T could see action in the Envision. Finally, while Buick can boast a pair of vehicles available with manual transmissions, it's still far from what we'd call a brand for fun driving experiences. Of course, one way of solving that problem is with a two-door convertible. Yes, it's extremely likely that the Euro-market Opel Cascada convertible will be sold in the US early in 2016. Whether it keeps the Cascada name is unclear (all in favor of Skylark, say "aye"). Regardless, adding a reasonably priced, relaxed, two-door droptop to the Buick range to fill the space left by the not-so-dearly departed Chrysler 200 Convertible seems like a no brainer.

How tariffs in China could cause a meltdown in the American South

Sun, Aug 25 2019

While BMW is clearly a German company, the crossovers that are exceedingly important to it are actually made in Spartanburg, South Carolina. And more than that, the Spartanburg plant (physically located in the town of Greer) is where the corporate know-how and capability for those vehicles is concentrated. These are the vehicles – specifically, the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 – that drove record growth for the company in 2018, according to BMW. But whatÂ’s most notable about BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, given current events, is that according to the U.S. Department of Commerce it was the largest automotive exporter by value for the fifth year running in 2018. ThatÂ’s worth emphasizing: largest automotive exporter by value. Not GM. Not Ford. BMW. And where might one assume that more than a few of those X vehicles are shipped to? China. Some 360 miles southwest of Spartanburg is Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc., in in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. It started building vehicles in 1997. Since then, Daimler AG has invested in excess of $5.5 billion in the facility. It manufactures the crossover now known as the GLE, formerly the ML-Class. It also makes the GLE coupe and GLS. Daimler describes the Tuscaloosa facility as “the traditional home of SUV production” for those vehicles. When it reported its global 2018 sales, Daimler noted that on a global basis SUVs account “for more than a third of all Mercedes-Benz sales.” According to the Chinese finance ministry, on December 15th the Chinese government will impose a 25% tariff on automobiles (and a 5% tariff on auto parts) from the U.S. Certainly this is going to have a direct effect on the sales of vehicles that are manufactured in the U.S. and exported to China. BMW and Mercedes are going to take it on the chin for the vehicles that they make in plants that they invested in so heavily in the U.S. Which could potentially mean that people in places like Greer, South Carolina, and Vance, Alabama, are going to find themselves in the crosshairs of the combatants. Soo too could Lincoln, which produces vehicles in places like Louisville, Kentucky (Navigator), Chicago, Illinois (Aviator) and Flat Rock, Michigan (Continental). Although the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is rapidly nearing completion in Shanghai, it is worth noting that vehicles built in Fremont, California, are being sold in China in numbers that donÂ’t make Musk unhappy.
