40 Year Usaf General 2nd Owner Stock Original Rust Free Runs Great on 2040-cars
St. George, Utah, United States
Beautiful, stock (other than very cool, period-correct Western Cyclone II rims), complete, rust free, great running and driving 1971 Buick Skylark Custom convertible that has had 40 years of loving ownership by a meticulous Two Star General and former Air Force test pilot. Unfortunately, he recently passed away and his wife has asked me to sell it for her. It comes with a folder of service records, owner notes and history that must be an inch thick. It even has the original metal Service Plate still attached to the original Owners Manual (see pics).
Mechanically it's excellent. It runs and drives great and needs nothing as far as I can tell (and I'm a devout classic car guy). Engine is the original Buick 350cid 2bbl, transmission is a Turbo 350 (rebuilt once with tranny specific service records since 1980), and rear differential is the original GM Corporate 10 Bolt. It was garage stored and used sparingly for the last nine years. Before that it was driven regularly on long-distance highway trips. As a result, it has 216,103 miles according to the service records. And they must be the easiest, most well-maintained miles any vintage GM product has ever seen. When you see the condition of the engine compartment and undercarriage (ask for my extra pics), in addition to how great it runs and drives, you will know what I mean. The body is in great condition. It was cosmetically restored in the late 1980's and early 1990's. I have many receipts from Year One (a leading vintage GM parts house) detailing what was included. Paint and body work (repair of quarter panels and doors) was done to an extremely high standard (everything was removed and body taken down to bare metal) in 1987 by Collector's Auto Restoration (the bill was $4975.72!) but is showing some age. As a patina guy, I'd probably just touch up the taillight housings (see pics) and buff out the rest. Passenger door skin has some small bubbling in front bottom corner (see pics) but I haven't picked at it to see what's underneath. The floorboards, doors and frame rails look great from underneath (see pics). And the rest of the body still looks great after 27 years. The interior was also part of the cosmetic restoration and looks great even after so many years. Upholstery and top have aged very well. Carpet has one wear hole on drivers side (see pics; Skylark logo floor mats cover it) but the rest is good as are the door panels. Dash pad has a crack (see pics) but I'm including a replacement cover. All lights, blinkers, wipers, idiot lights and gauges work properly. Clock, lighter, radio and ventilation selector switch do not work (fan works). Electric convertible top motors run well and top goes up and down very smoothly. My name is Chris and I am happy to answer your questions. Please call me at 435-669-1470. I also have tons of pictures that show every nook and cranny in great detail. Send me your email address and I'll get them to you. And this car is ready to enjoy today so you may want to consider flying in and driving home. That would be a blast and I'd be happy to help facilitate it. This sweet 1971 Buick Skylark convertible is located in the dry, desert community of St. George, Utah (a little over 100 miles north of Las Vegas). Good luck and good bidding. |

GM re-recalls 11k SUVs
Tue, Oct 13 2015General Motors is recalling a bunch of previously recalled SUVs because, well, they still aren't quite fixed. The latest repairs are necessary on 10,974 SUVs in North America, including 9,932 in only the US. Affected models include the 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and GMC Envoy; plus the 2006 Trailblazer EXT and Envoy XL. While not listed by NHTSA, a statement by GM to Autoblog says the 2006-2007 Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender are also affected. In these SUVs, it's possible that liquid could get into the driver's door master power window switch module and cause a short circuit. This could potentially lead to a fire, and owners are urged to park the vehicles outside until repaired. GM has been trying to fix this issue for years. It started as an investigation into fires, and that led to a recall for about 250,000 vehicles in cold-weather states. A nationwide campaign came in 2013 for 193,000 of them in the US. Last year, the automaker decided to replace the whole module as a repair. However in a recent investigation of these recalls, GM discovered that this latest group of SUVs never received the new part. According to documents submitted to NHTSA (as a PDF), "Some dealers incorrectly used the labor code associated with module replacement when, instead of replacing the module, they only added a protective coating to the module." To fix things this time, the models finally get the correct component. Certain 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL, and 2006-2007 TrailBlazer, Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender vehicles may continue to have a condition in which the printed circuit board inside the driver's door may corrode and short if exposed to certain fluids such as melted snow containing road salt. GM is aware of four fires but no crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with the expanded recall. The total number of vehicles being recalled, including Canada, Mexico and exports is 10.974. Customers are urged to park these vehicles outside until repairs have been made. GM reported this recall to the NHTSA on September 23.
GM announces six new recalls, covering 3.5 million vehicles
Mon, 16 Jun 2014General Motors has just initiated another crushingly large recall, this time affecting some 3.36 million vehicles built between 2000 and 2014 and sold in the US, Canada and Mexico. Once again, the issue surrounds the cars' ignition switches, which can be kicked out of the run position if they're carrying extra weight or if they experience a "jarring" event. In this particular case, though, GM will modify the keys, rather than the ignition itself.
A four-by-six-millimeter hole will be drilled into the key, which will more safely accommodate the weight of the key ring. As is usually the case, the work will be done free of charge. The recalled vehicles include the 2000 to 2005 Cadillac Deville, 2004 to 2005 Buick Regal LS and GS, 2004 to 2011 Cadillac DTS, 2005 to 2009 Buick Lacrosse, 2006 to 2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2006 to 2011 Buick Lucerne and 2006 to 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Only the Impala is still in production, and even then, it's only sold to fleet companies.
According to an official statement from GM, there have been eight crashes and six injuries due to this latest issue. As if this isn't a dire enough blow for GM, the company has announced five smaller recalls, covering 165,000 vehicles.
GM veteran Bryan Nesbitt tapped to head Buick design
Sat, Jun 6 2015General Motors styling veteran Bryan Nesbitt (pictured above) took over a new role on Monday as executive director of global Buick design and global architectures. Andrew Smith, who previously did that job and also coordinated the look for Cadillac, has remained in charge of the pen at Caddy with this shift. Nesbitt rose to prominence when he designed the Chrysler PT Cruiser, according to Automotive News. He joined GM in 2001 and has been there ever since in multiple high-level roles. In 2007, he was appointed vice president of design for North America and was later briefly general manager of Cadillac in 2009-2010. Nesbitt took over as the vice president of GM's international operations design in China in 2011. This shuffle also moves Ken Parkinson, currently styling boss for Chevrolet trucks, to China as design vice president there. In addition, John Cafaro becomes the person in charge of the look for Chevy globally, rather than previously splitting that role between cars and trucks with Parkinson. GM Global Design Leadership Changes – effective June 1, 2015. Bryan Nesbitt, Design Vice President, GM China will repatriate to North America and assume the position of Executive Director, Global Buick and Global Architectures. He will be located in Warren, MI. Bryan will be the design Champion for Buick in the US and China. Ken Parkinson, Executive Director, Global Chevrolet Trucks and Global Architecture will assume the position of Design Vice President, GM China. He will be based in Shanghai, China. Andrew Smith, Executive Director, Global Cadillac and Buick Design will assume the position of Executive Director, Global Cadillac. He will continue to be the design Champion for the Cadillac brand. In addition, he will continue to lead the Global Color & Trim team. He will be based in Warren, Michigan. John Cafaro, Executive Director, Global Chevrolet Cars will assume the position of Executive Director, Global Chevrolet. He will be the design Champion for Chevrolet. In addition, John will lead the exterior components and accessories team. He will continue to be based in Warren, MI. The roles and responsibilities of Helen Emsley, Mark Adams, Carlos Barba, Clay Dean, Michael Simcoe, and Teckla Rhoades remain the same.
