The cool thing about Buicks Skylark is that it combined luxury and performance in a way no other manufacturer could quite match. With a rumbling 340 cubic inch V8, an ultra-rare manual transmission, and an awesome color combination, this might be the luxury car that thinks its a muscle car.
Built on the same A-body platform as the Chevelle, the Skylark looks like a bigger, lower, sleeker car in every way. This rust-free specimen was given a ground-up restoration to original specs, including the brilliant Ermine White paint that gives this Buick an upscale look. The long lines are dramatic, no doubt about that, and youll note how well-assembled it is, with that character line running from stem to stern in an unbroken curve. Gaps are excellent, particularly for a powerful body-on-frame convertible, and the finish has a very authentic shine that just looks right. Theres plenty of chrome, including stainless rocker panel trim, and while Im no fan of fender skirts, who can deny that they dont look great here? If you want to stand out, this Skylark is a great alternative to a garden-variety Chevelle or Tempest.
The contrasting Garnet Red interior absolutely pops thanks to new materials inside. Fresh seat covers, correct carpets, and beautifully detailed door panels give it a factory fresh feeling. Look closely and youll note there are three pedals on the floor, linked to a 3-on-the-tree transmission, an incredibly rare option that makes this car one of only a handful built. Theres also a rare AM/FM radio in the dash, and the gauges are in remarkable condition. Dig the cool steering wheel with its funky 60s spokes, the upward-canted switch gear, and black rubber mats with the Buick tri-shield logo on them. The back seat is spacious enough for three, and with this cars good looks, youll have no trouble finding friends that want to cruise with you. A new black convertible top has been fitted recently, and the trunk comes complete with a correct rubber mat, full-sized spare, and unique wheel cover.
The engine is the original 340 cubic inch V8 topped by the optional 4-barrel carburetor, which makes for a very potent package. Theres bright Dante Red paint on the block, 340-4 decals on the valve covers, and a correct air cleaner up top. Recently rebuilt, it starts instantly and settles into an even idle immediately without any crankiness from the choke. The front suspension was also fully rebuilt within the past year, and dual exhaust was added with just the right amount of sophisticated rumble for a vintage Buick. Gorgeous Buick Road Wheels will never go out of style, and while they are not original equipment on this car, they look right. The 215/70/14 whitewall radials are in good condition with plenty of life left in them, but imagine how awesome this car would look with a set of redlines!
If youre a Buick fan, or perhaps just looking for something with the right combination of muscle and performance, this Skylark is an awesome choice. Call today!

A member of the 1987 Buick press fleet is hitting the auction block next year and it's a rarified gem: a low-mileage Regal Grand National GNX, serial No. 003 and one of just 547 models built for that year, and the last of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive Grand Nationals. It'll be auctioned at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January. The GNX No. 003 was loaned out to publications including Autoweek, Motor Trend and Road & Track, where it racked up around 8,200 miles. "Through it all, a constant sad undertone was the understanding that 1987 was to be the final appearance of the traditional body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive G-body (which also underpinned the best-selling Chevy Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Cutlass)," reads a the description published on Barrett-Jackson's website. "A totally redesigned W-body Somerset Regal, with front-wheel drive and unitized body construction, was slated to replace the popular midsize Buick in 1988." So Buick opted to make "a Grand National to end all Grand Nationals" with the '87 GNX, partnering with ASC/McLaren to equip them with wheel lip flares, fender vents, 16-by-8-inch BBS rims and more aggressive tires. It left untouched the Grand National's standard Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection 3.8-liter V6 but added a larger Garrett T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic impeller, a larger intercooler, more aggressive fuel, spark and waste gate tables, and a dual exhaust system that boosted output from 235 horsepower and 330 foot-pounds of torque to 276 hp and 360 lb-ft. That was enough, Barrett-Jackson reports, to make the performance coupe quicker and faster in quarter-mile tests than the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 930 Turbo. After making the test-drive rounds in the automotive media, the car sold in 1988 as a brass hat/company official car to Fischer Buick in Troy, Mich. with approximately 8,200 miles on it. From there, it quickly sold to a local resident who drove it very little, and sold it in the spring of 1989. Since 1992, it has reportedly been kept in climate-controlled storage, totally original, unmodified and undamaged, with just 10,790 miles on the odometer today. It recently underwent a complete mechanical service and cosmetic reconditioning. You can check out the listing on Barrett-Jackson here. The first '87 GNX ever produced resides in the General Motors Heritage Collection and No. 002 is at the Sloan Museum in Flint, Mich. Interestingly, another '87 GNX, No.

General Motors has announced a large investment in its Spring Hill, Tennessee facility. The former home of Saturn production will be getting a $167 million addition to a previously announced $183 million, to cover a pair of new midsize vehicles. The investment is expected to create 1,800 jobs at the factory.
That $350 million is being divvied up for a pair of programs at Spring Hill. The first will take the bulk of the money ($223 million) and create 1,000 of the 1,800 jobs, while the other will take the remaining $127 million and generate the leftover 800 positions. But GM says the investment will cover "midsize vehicle programs." So what could they be?
The leading candidate in our minds is a new crossover for Buick, called the Anthem, that will slot between the Encore and Enclave, but will be slightly smaller than the Equinox and Terrain. As we've explained, the new model will likely be the first product to sport GM's new D2UX platform, which will eventually replace both the Delta and Theta platforms. Spring Hill is already building the Equinox, so there could be some credence to this theory.
