1970 Buick Riviera 167k miles....not 267, 367, etc. FIRST OF ALL...THIS IS NOT A GS MODEL! I saw the emblems on eBay......bought them.....had them installed when the car was repainted a few years back. This car was originally acquired in, I believe 1984 or 1985.It was traded in on a new Honda by an elderly couple at Empire Olds/Honda in Denver, CO My brother was the salesman that took it in trade. He called me when the owners were at the dealership and told me of this cool car he was about to acquire.I high-tailed it down there to check it out. He later told me he saw me poking around in the Riv before the deal to trade it in was even completed. The car was to be mine from the start, but he registered it in his name for a short while as it was such an unusual and nice car. This was almost 30 years ago. You can just imagine how rare it is to see one of these out on the road these days! The car originally had the brocade cloth/vinyl interior. but after it was 18 yrs old or so, the front seat was in poor shape. I eventually had the front seat redone by Denver's finest trim shop, auto trim specialists on E Evans in Denver. This was long before they had custom replacement kits available on the market. I paid about 1000 for the shop to stitch the interior EXACTLY as original. This car has been spoiled since my family acquired it. My mother called the car the Big Bu...I have always called it The RivSo, after about 6 months of my brother owning the car...he sold it to me. I held it for about 14 years until I re-acquired a 1969 Olds 442 Convertible that my brother owned in the mid-70s. The people he sold it to had put it up for sale after the father and son had passed away.. So, in my mind, I had the ultimate collectors car, a 1969 442 Convertible. I had no use for the Riv any longer. I sold it to a dear friend of mine named Melanie. Melanie is about 5 feet 2 inches..and she owned the car for about 6 years. How she NEVER wrecked the car, I will never know as it is a huge car! Anyway, I eventually sold the 442 and got an itch to get a collector car again...I bought this car back from Melanie in about 2005. So, it has been in my sight for almost 30 years and I can assure you it has never had any dents pulled out or the like as long as I have been around it. It did come to us in the mid 80s with a dented rear bumper. (see photo) I have hit the front bumper on both sides up front. a pretty good hit on thre drivers side has made the removal of the headlight bezel a little difficult. But it can be done for headlight replacement. Unlike alot of these cars on eBay, this one is definitely not junk! it is near perfect except for the bumpers which could be removed and repaired/rechromed for about $1200 total. The numbers-matching original engine, transmission (that leaks) , rear-end w/POSI?? that could use a new gasket as I see some drips on garage floor- I believe it is has posi as it has the aluminum tag on differential cover) are still on the car....Tranny has NEVER been rebuilt...engine has NEVER been rebuilt but this car drives and runs excellently. It had the timing chain, master cylinder, belts, upper rad hose, exhaust system replaced in 2013. I have a $1200 dollar receipt and a $600 receipt in my possession. The car has an Alpine CD/MP3 AM-FM radio with JBL 6x9s in the rear and Rockford Fosgate speakers in the lower front.doors. The dash panel without any cuts is available occasionally on eBay if you must have the original appearance. The rear deck should also be available too. OPGI is coming out with new replacement parts for 1970 Rivieras quite frequently. The rear seat was redone with a kit from OPGI. So, I have pointed out the fron and rear bumper issues. The car has the high-profile fender skirts attached and I also have a set of EXCELLENT low-profile skirts which are included. I did have a right-rear blow-out many years ago and I lost the original rusted fender skirt and also the fron attaching device inside that wheel well. When I has the car painted I had the body show fabricate a bracket which is on the car. I have never used it as the short skirts have been attached since the new paint. The paint job was over 3K. The car has never been thru a brushed carwash since new paint. It comes with a custom fit car cover. Has a newer windshield, the original 43 year old Buick Rallye Wheels with an extra, near perfect set of center caps. SEE PHOTOS of all the extras you will receive. So much to say...I will have have to jump around a bit. The brakes make a hi-pitched squeal as it comes to a stop. This stareted after the master cylinder was raplaced a month or two ago. The brakes have been checked numerous times and I would thing the squeal is a relatively easy fix. I have a chromed air cleaner which covers the air filter only with a 455.4 sticker on it which is included. The steering wheel was replaced with a used, un-split wheel so there is no 3 dollar vinyl laced-up steering wheel cover on this car. The dash is original and perfect and has never been repaired. The door panels...perfect...no repairs...no cracks. This car is like a time-machine. Car has power windows, seat and cornering lamps. I always drove with the seat all the way back and reclined all the way too. When it is not in this position it sort of rocks back and forth. I would think this could be corrected fairly easily. The car was built in November 1969. Flint, Michigan, I believe. The 1970 is rarer than all OLDER Rivieras and also rarer than the 3 years of boat-tails. I have numerous sets of GM keys, a lot of extra bulbs, an extra cigarette lighter, an ash tray, I believe......You will also get a K&N air filter....an original sales brochure fro the 1970 Buicks and much more! I will be happy to re-send the photos to your email address so you can take a closer look. I encourage you to have the car looked at/inspected by a local mechanic/inspector/etc. I wil, be happy to show it to anyone or even take it to someone of your choice in the Denver area to have them look it over. .....Photos show carpet as possibly being discolored or stained...this is NOT the case! The carpet is in very good condition and it is BLACK! I have attached a photo of the ORIGINAL brake pedal pad to show this car has not been driven hard. It has been babied as long as I have known it. If anyone can tell me how to make it so the photos can been seen in a large format, please tell me!

eBay Find Of The Day: 1946 Tucker Torpedo Prototype II hides a secret Riviera

Thu, 10 Jul 2014

The Tucker Torpedo is one of the great what-if stories of automotive history. Preston Tucker hoped to revolutionize the industry with a car unlike any other on the road at the time. However, due to a variety of problems, he only managed build 51 vehicles before closing shop. Over time, they have become highly sought-after; In 2012, one sold for $2.65 million at auction.
That brings us to this Tucker "replica" that you see above because it might be one of the ugliest monstrosities ever put together. However, we might extend some leniency to the creator, as the vehicle isn't actually trying to replicate the classic look of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Instead, it is attempting to reproduce an earlier prototype from 1946 that actually features that weird, trident nose. According to the seller, his uncle built the car as a labor of love and supposedly used actual plans from Tucker as inspiration.
Underneath all of the crazy changes is a 1971 Buick Riviera powered by a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) Buick V8. Some of the replica's odder modifications include the front fenders that turn with the wheels and the fin running down the back. All three headlights work, but the one in the middle is only for the high beams. Oddly, the small hinged sections on the roof are meant to open to avoid hitting your head when getting in or out. Maybe the seller's uncle was a very tall guy?

GM announces 3 new recalls affecting 1.7M vehicles in North America [w/video]

Mon, Mar 17 2014

Still embroiled in the ongoing ignition switch recall, General Motors announced today three more discrete recalls, affecting a grand total of 1,546,900 vehicles in the US. The Detroit News reports that some 1.7 million vehicles are affected overall in North America. The first and largest of the trio of new recalls concerns some 1.18-million Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia crossovers from the 2008-2013 model years, Chevrolet Traverse from 2009-2013 (pictured above) and Saturn Outlook vehicles from 2008-2010. All of the crossover utilities may have an issue with the wiring harness for their seat-mounted side airbags. Apparently, the vehicles are equipped with a Service Air Bag warning light that, if ignored, "will eventually result in the non-deployment of the side impact restraints." Those restraints include the side airbags, a front-center airbag if the vehicle is so equipped and seatbelt pretensioners. Dealers of affected vehicles will be instructed to remove driver and passenger side airbag wiring harness connectors, and then "splice and solder the wires together." The second recall affects 303,000 Chevrolet Express (pictured right) and GMC Savana vans from model years 2009-2014, and with gross vehicle weights under 10,000 pounds. Said vehicles do not comply with a head impact requirement for unrestrained occupants, and will need a reworking of the instrument panel material to be sent back on the road. It doesn't sound as though there's a quick fix for this one, as the GM press release states: "Unsold vehicles have been placed on a stop delivery until development of the solution has been completed and parts are available." Finally, the third recall affects 63,900 Cadillac XTS luxury sedans from model years 2013 and 2014. A brake booster pump may be susceptible to corrosion by way of the relay, potentially causing and electrical short, overheating, melting of plastic components and even engine fires. GM says it is aware of two engine fires in unsold XTS models and two cases of melted parts. Repairs for the issues affecting the XTS have not not mentioned by GM in the release. The Detroit News is also reporting that along with news of the triple-recall, GM is taking a $300-million credit to help pay for the repair costs, and to deal with the ongoing costs associated with the ignition switch recall. In an attempt to explain just what GM has been doing in the face of these very serious issues, newly minted CEO Mary Barra has addressed the issues in a new video.

Buick version of Equinox/Terrain CUV spied testing... with autonomous gear?

Wed, 12 Jun 2013

Let's get the most pressing bits of this story out of the way right off the bat: What we see here appears to be a new compact crossover from Buick. According to the spy photographer, this machine may be a little bit smaller on the outside than the current Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain 'utes, which makes sense since recent rumors suggest GM's small crossovers will migrate to a new platform that will mark a convergence between the automaker's Delta (Chevy Cruze, Buick Verano) and Theta (Equinox, Terrain) platforms. This Buick would likely use this new D2UX platform.
We've been expecting Buick to unleash a crossover to slot between the very small Encore and the very large Enclave, and various rumors have indicated that the model may be known as either the Anthem or Envision. It's worth mentioning that Buick had planned, back in 2009, to release a vehicle in the compact CUV market, but abandoned those plans after a particularly poor reception.
And now for something completely different... Take another look at the spy shots above, and pay special attention to the cylindrical device mounted to the vehicle's roof. We can't say for sure what it is, but our spy photographer opines that it looks quite a bit like the 360-degree Lidar camera equipment used by Google for its autonomous cars. Is General Motors working with Google on autonomous car technology? We don't know, but you can definitely consider us intrigued.
