THE 1963 RIVIERA WAS AN INSTANT CLASSIC THE DAY IT WAS BUILT! DESIGNED TO OFFER SOME PRETTY STIFF COMPETITION TO ALL THE OTHER LUXURY AMERICAN CARS, THE RIVIERA'S BODY LINES WERE A STATEMENT IN REFINEMENT. PAIRED WITH THIS CLASSIC STYLE WERE THE BUICKS HARD HITTING MECHANICALS THAT PROPELLED THE RIVIERA BEYOND THE ORDINARY INTO THE EXTRAORDINARY. THE 425 NAIL HEAD PUT OUT 340 H.P. , NOT BAD FOR A LUXURY CAR. THE REAL SURPRISE WAS THE 465 FT. LBS. OF TORQUE THAT MADE THIS LUXURY CAR FEEL LIKE A SPORTS CAR!!!. Still regarded as perhaps the best post-war automotive design worthy of graduating to Full Classic status, the Buick Riviera was one of the biggest automotive newsmakers of the day. While the name dates back to 1949, when Buick applied it to the pillarless two-door hardtop version of the Roadmaster, the Riviera broke out as a separate car in 1963, but it almost didn’t happen that way. Bill Mitchell reportedly got the inspiration for the Riviera’s sharp lines and sporty nature from, respectively, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari, and then turned to Ned Nickles to flush out the concept as a revived La Salle; it only became a Buick when Cadillac passed on the idea and GM then shopped it around to its other divisions. "One of the most beautiful cars America ever built" as stated by none other than Sergio Pininfarina of Ferrari design fame at it's debut at the Paris auto show in 1963. In that first and most desirable year (1963), power complemented styling with a standard 401-cu.in., 325hp V-8, or the optional 340hp 425. A finely tuned suspension provided great balance while front and rear leather bucket seats and center console made for both a stunning and comfortable interior. It brought a whole new meaning to the phrase “personal luxury car market” that up till then had been dominated by Ford’s Thunderbird. Buick's T-Bird fighter, the original Riviera, was a gentleman's muscle car, an executive express that offered luxury, high style, room for four, and power enough to embarrass many a performance car. Hemmings recently touted the 1963 Riviera as one of the top 10 collector cars poised to greatly increase in value. THIS CAR WAS ORDERED AND PURCHASED NEW BY ALICE WALKER ON 12/22/1962.THE ORIGINAL PLAQUE IS STILL ON THE DASH WITH HER NAME ON IT. SHE OWNED THE CAR UNTIL 06/22/2000 WHEN SHE SOLD THE CAR WITH 70,024 MILES TO A COLLECTOR IN WARSAW,KY. HE KEPT THE CAR UNTIL 03/30/2007 AND SOLD IT WITH 73,466 MILES TO A DEALER IN KY. HE SOLD IT TO A GENTLEMAN IN CULLMAN, ALABAMA THAT BOUGHT IT FOR HIS WIFE WHO OWNED ONE NEW IN 1963,SHE TOOK IT FOR ONE RIDE AND SAID IT WAS TOO BIG FOR HER TO DRIVE SO HE PARKED IT IN HIS AIRPLANE HANGER AND IT SAT THERE TILL I BOUGHT IT THIS PAST FEBRUARY.THE CAR NOW HAS 74,581ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. I WAS GOING TO RESTO ROD THE CAR BUT IT IS SUCH A NICE CLEAN SURVIVOR THAT I HATE TO CHANGE ANYTHING ON IT.THE CAR IS PRETTY MUCH THE WAY I BOUGHT IT I CLEANED IT UP AND DROVE IT AROUND TOWN A FEW TIMES AND PARKED IT IN MY GARAGE. THE CAR IS EQUIPPED THE 401 NAILHEAD V8,AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION,POWER STEERING,POWER WINDOWS.POWER SEATS,POWER TRUNK RELEASE AND AIR CONDITIONING. THIS CAR IS RUST FREE AND APPEARS TO HAVE ALL IT`S ORIGINAL PANELS WHICH ARE ALL LASER STRAIGHT. THE CAR WAS REPAINTED ONCE MANY YEARS AGO AND THE PAINT IS STILL IN VERY GOOD SHAPE WITH A FEW SMALL IMPERFECTIONS.IT EVEN HAS 2 OF THE ORIGINAL T3 HEADLIGHTS. THE UNDERCARRAGE HAS A LITTLE SURFACE RUST BUT HAS NO HOLES OR THIN SPOTS.THE TRUNK IS SOLID AND STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL LINER IN IT. THE ORIGINAL TAN LEATHER INTERIOR IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH NO RIPS OR TEARS. THE DOOR PANELS AND HEADLINER ARE ALSO VERY NICE. THE DASH PAD IS IN PERFECT SHAPE WITH NO CRACKS IN IT. THE RUGS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE WITH NO HOLES IN THEM BUT THEY COULD USE A CLEANING. THE CHROME IS ALL ORIGINAL AND IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE FOR BEING 50 YEARS OLD. THE FRONT BUMBER HAS ONE SPOT WHERE THE CHROME IS A LITTLE DULL. THE ORIGINAL WHEEL COVERS ARE AISO IN VERY GOOD SHAPE AND THE TIRES APPEAR TO BE CLOSE TO NEW. THE DRIVETRAIN IS ALL ORIGINAL AND ALL STOCK.IT DOES NEED TO BE SERVICED AND GONE OVER BY A MECHANIC SINCE IT HAS BEEN PRETTY MUCH SITTING IN A GARAGE FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS. THIS IS A VERY NICE ORIGINAL CAR THAT HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT SINCE NEW.

GM to idle car production at five factories as Americans continue CUV love affair
Mon, Dec 19 2016In case you needed another reminder that Americans have fallen out of love with sedans, General Motors today announced plans to idle five factories in January in a bid to cut its inventory to 70 days. Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly ( Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Volt and Impala) and Fairfax Assembly in Kansas ( Chevy Malibu) will stop production for three weeks. Lansing Grand River ( Cadillac ATS and CTS, and Chevy Camaro) is going down for two weeks, while Lordstown, OH ( Chevy Cruze) and Bowling Green, KY ( Chevy Corvette) will go idle for a week each, Automotive News reports. GM's shutdown reflects a broader problem with the company's supply – at 847,000 vehicles, the company's supply increased unsteadily from a low of 629,000 units in January of 2016. That's more than a 25 percent increase in the past year. Citing information from Autodata, The Detroit News reports that at the end of November, GM had a 168-day supply of LaCrosses, 177 days' worth of Camaro, 170 days of Corvette, 121 days for Cruze, 119 days for ATS, 132 days for CTS, and 110 days of CT6. Meanwhile, inventory of the company's more popular vehicles is actually below the professionally accepted 60- to 70-day supply, The News reports. The Trax, Colorado pickup, and GM's full-size SUVs are sitting below 50 days and experiencing year-over-year sales increases. GM needs a rethink of its inventory levels, which is something that's apparently coming. "We're going to be responsible in managing our inventory levels," GM spokesman Jim Cain told The News. Another unnamed spokesman told Automotive News the company's day-to-day supplies would "fluctuate before moderating at year-end." But at least one analyst thinks this won't be the last time Detroit needs to stop production to level things out. "Incentives are elevated, residuals are declining, and rates are rising," Brian Johnson, an analyst with Barclays, told The News. "And while GM in particular may benefit in the months ahead from new product launches, it's important to recognize that GM's inventory is elevated at the moment, and it wouldn't surprise us if they need to announce another production cut – which could pressure the stock." Junkyard Gem: Heavily personalized 1997 Buick Skylark Custom Sedan
Wed, Mar 27 2019Normally I wouldn't be much interested in a third-generation GM N-Body (a family that includes the Chevy Malibu and Olds Achieva) spotted in the junkyard, though a case could be made for such a vehicle's historical significance. This '97 Skylark, however, arrived in a Northern California self-service wrecking yard well-plastered with stickers, reflectors, and other personalizing touches, making it an interesting document of its time and place. It appears that both of the original white fenders got mashed and then replaced with blue ones, almost certainly obtained cheaply at a yard like this one. If you're not going to paint your new fenders to match the car, then you're already well down the slippery slope to making the car a giant mobile canvas to display your interests. A 20-year-old GM N-Body, regardless of how nice it was when new, isn't worth much, and you could stretch a line of these cars from Lansing to Lahore with all the used-up Ns sitting in American wrecking-yard inventory right now. Perhaps it was the grandchild of the car's original owner who indulged in White Widow cannabis and listened to Siouxsie & the Banshees. The odds against finding the original window sticker in a car like this are mighty long, but here it is. Sold new at Putnam Buick in Burlingame. It appears that this car spent most of its final decade in or near Mill Valley. Mill Valley is a mere 30 miles from Burlingame, or about three hours of Buick driving (you have to go past SFO, through San Francisco, and across the Golden Gate Bridge, a journey featuring apocalyptically terrible traffic at just about any time). Drive east across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and you'll get to this Skylark's final parking space, about 20 miles from Mill Valley. This car lived its whole life near the shores of San Francisco Bay, and it will die there. Feathers and a political-party charm adorn the headliner. This car's final owner had a practical side, as we can see from the many reflectors and lengths of safety tape. Just the thing for avoiding a T-bone wreck in the dead of night! "Essentially, Skylark embodies all of the features customers expect from a Buick, in a smaller package, with a very attractive MSRP."
The 2018 Buick Regal is now a hatchback and a wagon
Wed, Apr 5 2017Buick has long been General Motors' most traditional brand. With the launch of the 2018 Regal, it's now arguably GM's most risk-taking brand. Buick is turning its midsize staple into a hatchback, called the Regal Sportback, and a wagon, the Regal TourX. Revealed Tuesday afternoon at GM's historic Design Dome in Warren, Mich., the cars will go on sale in the fall after next week's public debut at the New York Auto Show. "At Buick we can try things other people haven't tried," GM product chief Mark Reuss said. The wagon – though Reuss was reluctant to call it one – is a longer (3.4 inches), higher-riding (0.6 inches) version of the Regal Sportback. It's the first Buick wagon since the 1990s Roadmaster, and it's aimed at the seemingly never-satiated crossover market in the United States. View 12 Photos The TourX will compete against the Volvo XC60 Cross Country, Audi A4 Allroad, Subaru Outback, and BMW 3 Series wagon. The Buick offers up 73.5 cubic feet of storage space behind the front seats and is all-wheel drive only. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 250 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque that teams with an eight-speed automatic transmission. "It's something that is very different and very beautiful, and it's a good alternative for Buick to try," Reuss said. The Sportback, meanwhile, offers the same four-cylinder and eight-speed trans as the TourX in AWD trim. The Sportback also offers a front-wheel-drive model that uses a four-cylinder paired with a nine-speed automatic, and the engine is rated at 250 hp and 260 lb-ft in that setup. With swoopy creased styling, the Regal Sportback offers a slightly different riff on the crowded sedan segment, which GM says still has three million annual retail sales. On a side note, Saab fans might feel some old wounds at the sight of the hatchback Buick, as the 5-door 9-3 was axed by GM in an attempt to make the model more mainstream before the brand's demise. Both models will offer front pedestrian braking, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, OnStar and seven-inch or eight-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As expected, the Regals are based on the Opel Insignia, and they will be built in Ruesselsheim, Germany. Reuss said GM plans to build the Regals there after the company sells Opel to PSA. He also said GM isn't concerned about potential border/import taxes that could be levied by the Trump Administration. "I don't know what the border tax is," he said.
