1963 Buick Riviera Base Hardtop 2-door Rust Free Arizona Car on 2040-cars

Cave Creek, Arizona, United States

This is a 1963 Buick Riviera that got parked after an accident in late 1980's. As you can see it has a not so minor dent on the left rear quarter panel. He always was going to fix it, but never got around to it. It does have a salvage title. Of course there are no liens on it.

The car is incredibly straight and ding free other than this accident. The engine is very clean with no oil leaks or any other noticeable oozing or grease. The critters did move in for awhile and they did chew on some wiring, but nothing that can't be easily repaired. It looks like the spark plug wires and the battery cables got the worst of it. There is only one rust spot on the right rear trunk drop. It looks like something spilled in the trunk and got that area damp and there is a two and a half inch by one inch weak spot. I took a close up of that area. I also took pictures of the heel of the front fender, the bottom lip of the hood, the bottom of the rear glass and the windshield. All of the areas you would expect rust have nothing, not even a pimple. There are a couple of chrome strips off, bit I found them on the floor in front of the seat. All of the pot metal trim is very good with little to no pitting. The lenses are all present, but they are really cooked from the Arizona sun and very brittle. They are usable as-is, but I am fairly certain all of them are available new.

I think the quarter can be easily repaired by a competent body man, especially when you consider the massive amount of work to replace the panel. The bumper of course can be straightened and rechromed or I have found a half dozen good used bumpers if you were doing a budget resto. the rest of the bodywork is very minimal. I was going to take a picture of it wet, but I think that would be deceptive. The car was parked outside in Phoenix heat and the paint is cooked to dust. It is just falling off the center of the roof. The grille, trim and the overall body show extremely minor wear and tear. No Whiskey dent or parking lot scrapes or even door dings. It must have been a beauty when it was new.

This is of course a restoration project and it will need everything brought up to snuff. The interior is the typical Southwest Desert baked to hell cockpit. All of the diecast, and there is a mile of it in these Rivieras, is superb. It has been protected by an inch of dust and has no pitting. The seats are still in relatively good shape, but if you even lean on the vinyl it starts cracking like potato chips. The headliner has split at the seams and the visors are all falling apart. The good news is the bones of the car are all solid as  can be and they make complete interior kits to put on these solid springs and frames. The passenger door interior panel is gone, but the screws and armrest and other goodies are on the front floor where they were taken off about a hundred years ago. I have no keys. I can't get in the trunk and I don't want to tear up the interior to get in through the back seat. I would hazard a guess that the door panel is in there, but I don't honestly know. Again I can get a used door panel for a very reasonable price. The carpet is very dry rotted and will come out easily but I don't want to screw up the pad. That can be reused. I looked underneath and it is shiny factory paint there.

All in all, this is about as honest a car as you can find. The pictures are here as found, warts and all. If it were primered up, you never know what was done for the primer to cover up. I bought some fair used tires and put them on the original mags so it will roll. I blew about an acre of dust off of it and hosed the rest of the leaves and grass from the car. I'm offering it for sale with a very modest reserve. If it doesn't hit that, then the parts will be available. This is a very good example of a great collectible car and you don't need to start off by welding a floor in it. You will never understand how easy a restoration can be until you get a solid desert car.

I can get this shipped anywhere in the world. I have a clear open Arizona certificate of title. The car is sold as-is, where-is. All shipping charges are on the buyer. I can store this for 30 days, then it will need to go to a storage yard. All funds must clear my bank before the car leaves my possession. No Nigerian Princes, No third party checks on an Iranian bank. Check with your wife, mother, brother, priest, Labrador, before bidding. I am only offering this once. It is worth much more in parts than I am asking.

BMW tops Consumer Reports 2023 Brand Report Card

Thu, Feb 16 2023

Feels like we wrote about Consumer Reports' 2022 Brand Report Car and 10 Top Picks a few weeks ago, but it was last April. So the mag is back with a ranked roster of 32 brands and 10 vehicles in four categories for your debating pleasure. Starting with the brands, last year's top three were Subaru, Mazda and BMW. This year, the Munich crew climbed two spots to win the prize thanks to "Superb road test scores and solid results in CR’s reliability and owner satisfaction surveys." Subaru narrowly fell to second, maintaining its four-year run in the top three. Mini, eighth last year, jumped five spots to get the last step on the podium. The rest of the top 10 were Lexus (up one spot from last year), Honda (down one spot from last year), Toyota (up three), Genesis (up 12), Mazda (down six), Audi (down three) and Kia (up eight). The magazine and testing outfit says its Brand Report Card "[reveals] which automakers are producing the most well-performing, safe, and reliable vehicles based on CRÂ’s independent testing and member surveys," and that "Brands that rise to the top tend to have the most consistent performance across their model lineups." Last year's top 10 had six automakers from Japan, three from Germany (giving Mini credit for England), none from the U.S. or South Korea, and five luxury brands. This year's list counts five makes from Japan, two from Germany because Porsche fell out of the top ten, two from South Korea, still none from the U.S., and four luxury brands. Buick again ranked as the best domestic, dropping to 12th after being 11th last year. The big mover was Lincoln, its 10-place jump up to 16th attributed to better reliability from the Corsair and Nautilus. Tesla's improved overall reliability saw it climb six spots to 17th. Dodge climbed one spot to 15th. Jeep got out of the penalty box in last to come second-to-last. Land Rover fell three places into the penalty spot.  CR's top 10 vehicle models The 10 Top Picks list is practically a new list. Only two holdovers made it to 2023, those being the Subaru Forester and Kia Telluride.

Opel to electrify all model lines by 2024, speeding PSA transition

Thu, Nov 9 2017

What do you see in the Opel logo? That's right, a lightning bolt. As the German automaker dramatically restructures its future plans, electric cars are in the core of Opel's survival. With attempts to stop leaking money, Opel is speeding up its secession from GM technology, launching nine new models by 2020 with the aim to complete transition to PSA hardware by 2024, leaving only two Opel platforms. This is all part of Opel's freshly announced PACE turnaround plan, which is crucial for the company's survival, according to CEO Michael Lohscheller. "PACE will unleash our full potential. This plan is paramount for the company, to protect our employees against headwinds and turn Opel/Vauxhall into a sustainable, profitable, electrified, and global company," says Lohscheller. Competitiveness will be improved by reducing per-car costs by 700 euros, and by cutting marketing costs by 10 percent. Regarding Vauxhall's future, the statement still includes the British brand. When the Opel sale agreement was reached between PSA and GM in March, the plan was to start implementing PSA technology in 2019, completing the transition in eight years, as Automotive News says. The new business plan is noticeably faster. By 2020, with full access to PSA's electric tech, Opel would have a fully electric next-generation Corsa hatchback and a PHEV version of the Grandland X SUV, which is already based on Peugeot's 3008 model. Currently, there are nine Opel platforms and 10 engine families. By 2024 there should be two platforms and four powertrains; the number of diesel engines in use remains to be seen, and all product lines would include an electrified model. There would be an SUV and a midsize vehicle based on PSA's EMP2 architecture, with the former built in Eisenach — formerly known as the town that built East German Wartburg cars before its Opel era — and the latter built in Russelsheim, where Opel HQ is located. The Russelsheim hub will become PSA's global "competence center," where all Opel/Vauxhall vehicles would be engineered — not Paris. Plans include avoiding any factory closures or personnel layoffs. The PACE statement also mentions Opel's entrance to all of 20 new export markets, with a specific mention of China and Brazil, countries which have traditionally seen Opels sold as Chevrolets. Will the United States be included in that export plan?

2014 Buick Regal GS AWD

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

"This is just silly," I said as I laughed my way sideways around the icy track at Circuit ICAR, a racecourse, drag strip and kart track at the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport in Quebec. It wasn't the activity that had me cracking up, though. After all, winter driving experiences aren't uncommon in this business.
No, in this particular case, it was the car that had me chuckling. I wasn't in a mad hot hatch or a rally-derived rocket - I was in a Buick. The 2014 Regal GS, to be more precise. Somehow, despite its recent product renaissance (not to mention its distant - yet storied - history of performance models), I was having a hard time believing that this attractive, turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedan sliding around the Great White North could possibly be wearing a Tri-Shield badge on its nose.
But it was, and slide about it did. While having access to a vehicle in this setting is fairly rare, what's rarer is the fact that I've had so much exposure to it. In Mr. Ewing's recent Volkswagen Golf R drive story, for instance, his ice capades were his first experience with the new model. In my case, though, I was lucky enough to first test the refreshed Regal GS for a week back in December before flying to Quebec to drive it on the snowy, icy, winding roads of Canada's most fiercely independent province and on the track at Mirabel.
