1928 Buick Master Country Club Coupe

This is an ultra rare Master Country Club Coupe (54C) riding on the 128" wheelbase -- one of only a handful left and the only 1928 currently on the market (there's a 27 54C for sale for $72,000). The car was restored in the 60's or 70's and has been well maintained and stored inside since. There are no major modifications to the car -- it retains the original Marvel carburetor/heat control system and gravity feed + vacuum fuel system in addition to the original mechanical brakes and six volt electrical system. I drive this car back and forth to work nearly everyday and it's exceptionally reliable. I'll do my best to represent the car through descriptions, photos, and videos, but don't hesitate in contacting me if you have questions or require additional pictures. Clay: (512) 653-0773

Exterior

Overall, this is a very aesthetically beautiful car. The paint is an older single stage job and shows well with some lacquer checking on the yellow (very limited and hardly noticeable unless you're an inch from it). There are other various small chips in the paint in the normal places (near the hood hold-downs, around the hood hinge, etc.). Chrome/nickel is very presentable and has a nice patina to it which matches the rest of the car. There is no trace of plastic body filler abuse or rust out anywhere on the car -- underside of the fenders are smooth and without repair). Body lines and panels are smooth with no waving or orange peel present. The wood structure of the body is sound with no visible rot or signs thereof (doors don't sag and there's no weird creaking while driving). Original Fisher body number stamp (in the main wood frame of the body) is in great shape and is in a photograph below for reference. The radiator cap is in excellent condition as is the radiator shell. All lighting works as it should.

Interior

The interior is all mohair and is in great shape.  All decorative wood is very presentable and none of it is missing. All interior handles are present, but, as you will see in the photos, a replacement handle is on the passenger side window since the original cracked (I have it). All interior lighting works including both sets of dash lights (back light and 'map' light). All gauges are verified to work with the exception of the fuel gauge which I have not had time to troubleshoot (plus is really easy to simply look in the fuel tank to see the level). The speedometer cable broke internally (near the transmission) about a week ago so I can't demonstrate that it, but it does work. Steering wheel is in excellent original condition with no cracks in the wood and the metal controls are near flawless (though they do show a patina). All carburetor controls are in place and work (heat control and choke) and the ignition/steering column lock works as it should. Both side windows and the rear window roll up and down; the driver's side window needs new felts.  The horn does work, but it isn't in the engine pictures (I was working on it).

Mechanical

This car runs, drives, and stops VERY well. To be clear: When I say it drives well, don't assume that you can hop in this car and drive it like it's a new Camry...if that's your mental image, you'll be sorely disappointed.  I do drive this car daily -- it's an exceptionally reliable car and is a pleasure to drive, but you DO HAVE to actively participate in driving it. There's the double clutching when shifting, watching the gauges, adjusting the heat control on the carb, hand signaling for turns, looking out for idiots spending more time trying to photograph this car than driving their own cars...ya know, all that come with driving a car of this vintage. The engine starts quick, doesn't smoke (from the exhaust or the road draft tube), runs smoothly, and barely leaves a trace (we're talking one or two drips on the ground...that's it!). She's plenty powerful and has no problem pulling hills in third gear even at low speeds. In fact, you can easily take off from a dead stop in third on a flat surface if you want to without having to slip the clutch much. Transmission and rear end are in great shape and have no problems whatsoever.  Steering is tight and the original lovejoy shock absorbers work as they should. This car steers easier at a dead stop than my Model A Ford (and this car weights A LOT more than a Model A). Tires are 8-ply and are nearly new -- probably no more than a few thousand miles on them.

Maintenance Performed:

  • Cleaned and gapped plugs (W14 Champions)
  • Dressed the points and replaced the condenser
  • Set base timing (timing is always adjustable from the steering wheel for starting, driving, etc.)
  • Oil changed (~200 miles ago)
  • Adjusted the valves (~200 miles ago)
  • Transmission, rear diff, and steering box fluid (known as 'steam cylinder oil' and yes I used the correct oil)
  • Adjusted the brakes (~100 miles ago)
  • Generator brushes (all three -- ~20 miles ago)
  • Modern coil bolted to original mount holes (original working coil comes with the car).
  • Rebuilt the Marvel carburetor with new gaskets and a modern phenolic float (original cork float included in sale).
  • All new bulbs for exterior lighting (~1,000 miles ago)
  • Chassis fully serviced and greased (including wheel bearings, brakes, throwout bearing, distributor, starter, generator, etc.)

POP QUIZ: Want to know a solution for texting and driving?  Make everyone drive cars from the twenties.

I've tried to shoot every angle of this car, but do not hesitate in requesting additional shots if you feel I've missed out on any areas. This car has nothing to hide!  I've included a video at the end of the pictures, but here's the direct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJXf3g0oeZc

2016 Buick Regal prices slashed

Tue, Aug 4 2015

The Buick Regal is getting an aggressive price cut for the 2016 model year to keep pace in a crossover-centric world and its own hyper-competitive midsize sedan segment. The 2016 Buick Regal GS now starts at $35,915, after a $925 destination charge, which amounts to a $3,320 price cut compared to 2015. There's no de-contenting associated with the cost decreases either, and the vehicles are now available with Apple CarPlay. The lower prices follow through much of the lineup. The 1SP Premium model sees a $2,535 savings at $33,415 after destination; the 1SL trim falls $1,000 to $30,840; and the 1SV maintains at $28,915. The decision to make these cuts is meant to better position the midsize sedan against its rivals. "We know consumer sentiment towards sedans has decreased," Buick spokesperson Nick Richards said to Autoblog. CUVs like the company's own Encore are where buyers are moving. "Repositioning the Regal to more aggressively compete in the midsize sedan segment is the first of many steps we are taking in advance of next year's product offensive," Buick sales vice president Duncan Aldred said in a letter to dealers, according to USA Today. The decision probably couldn't have come at a better time because the Regal has suffered so far in 2015. Through July, the company has delivered 10,928 of them, down a significant 19.3 percent from the same period last year. A recent study also found that the model was among the most likely in the US to be sold after just one year of ownership.

Car technology I'm thankful and unthankful for

Mon, Nov 27 2017

The past few years have seen a surge of tech features in new vehicles — everything from cloud-based content to semi-autonomous driving. While some of it makes the driving experience better, not all tech is useful or well thought out. Automakers who are adept at drivetrains, ride quality and in-cabin comforts often fail at infotainment interfaces and connectivity. From testing dozens of vehicles each year and in the spirit of gratitude, here are three car tech features I'm thankful — and a trio I could live without. Thanks Connected search: This seems like a no-brainer since everyone already has it on their smartphones, but not all automakers include it in the dashboard and as part of their nav systems. The best ones, such as Toyota Entune, leverage a driver's connected device to search for a range of services and don't charge a subscription or require a separate data plan for the car. I also like how systems like Chrysler Uconnect use Yelp or other apps to find everything from coffee to gas stations and allow searching via voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: It took two of the largest tech companies to get in-dash infotainment right. While they have their disadvantages (you're forced to use Apple Maps with CarPlay, for example), the two smartphone-integration platforms make it easier and safer to use their respective native apps for phoning, messaging, music and more behind the wheel by transferring a familiar UI to the dashboard — with no subscription required. Heated seats and steering wheels: I really appreciate these simple but pleasant features come wintertime. It's easy to get spoiled by bun-warmers on frosty mornings and using a heated steering wheel to warm the cold hands. I recently tested a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe that also had heated armrest that added to a cozy luxury experience. Bonus points for brands like Buick that allow setting seat heaters to turn on when the engine is remotely started. No thanks Automaker infotainment systems: Automakers have probably poured millions into creating their own infotainment systems, with the result largely being frustration on the part of most car owners. And Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming along to make them obsolete. While some automaker systems, such as Toyota Entune and FCA's Uconnect, are easy and intuitive to use, it seems that high-end systems (I'm looking at you BMW iDrive and Mercedes-Benz COMAND) are the most difficult.

GM issues CUV stop-sale due to Goodyear tires [UPDATE]

Thu, Jan 22 2015

UPDATE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that only 6,281 tires were installed on the CUVs, when in actuality, there were 6,281 CUVs affected by the stop-sale order, totaling 25,124 tires. The story has been edited to reflect this. General Motors has issued a stop-sale order on some 6,300 of its Lambda platform crossovers due to a pending recall on their 18-inch Goodyear Fortera HL tires. The affected vehicles include all three flavors of GM's large CUV platform, consisting of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. Goodyear is recalling a total of 48,500 Fortera HL tires after discovering "very small" cracks in the tread, found during internal testing. Of the affected tires, 32,100 were made for GM, Goodyear told Automotive News. According to GM, 6,281 CUVs were fitted with the questionable rubber, totaling 25,124 of the company's 32,100 tires. The remainder were stocked as replacements, a GM rep told Autoblog. The remaining 16,400 tires were built specifically for the aftermarket. Goodyear reports that the cracks do "not indicate a safety issue." Meanwhile, a GM spokesman told AN that stop-sale "will eventually lead to a non-compliance recall by GM."
