1998 Buick Lesabre Custom Sedan 4-door 3.8l For Parts Or Repair on 2040-cars

Year:1998 Mileage:79102
Location:

Decatur, Georgia, United States

Decatur, Georgia, United States

This was my daughter's college car.  She worked really hard to keep it running, but the constant struggle is too much for her to deal with while she goes to school.  This is not for sale as a daily driver that is expected to be in running condition.  Getting it through inspection this year may be touch and go.  This is what you need to know.  Please read carefully because there is NO WARRANTY.  If you buy it, this belongs to you.  There are NO RETURNS AND NO REFUNDS.  This is LOCAL PICKUP ONLY.  It will probably roll wherever you want to take it under its own power, but I DON'T RECOMMEND a multi-state road trip to pick this up.

Known:
  • My daughter changed the oil and filter, carefully measuring out the correct amount (she said that was important) every 3,000 miles or less since October 2012.
  • She says it dirties oil faster than it used to.  The oil looks worse coming out than it did at the start.
  • This car is on its second engine, but, as far as the very honest dealer in North Carolina knew, the odometer reading was still within 1,000 miles of accurate.  (None of us have any suspicion about his honesty.  We flew up from GA to buy a used car for her because he has sold us such solid vehicles that were in exactly the condition he said.  My daughter and some of her mechanic friends have wondered whether someone lied to him, though, and represented a very old engine as newer when he bought the replacement.  She got it running well at around 65k and says she's shocked at how fast it fell apart).
  • The transmission fluid and filter are coming up on needing replacement.
  • It needs front tires pretty soon.
  • It shifts kind of badly.
  • The engine is struggling, maybe due to the transmission and manifolds.  While the AC works and often runs ice cold, she says it sometimes cuts out just because the car isn't up to keeping it on.
  • The suspension is not perfect anymore but really pretty okay considering the car's age.
  • All the power stuff and the radio works.  The leather is in decent shape.  The speakers seem to work fine.  The remote unlocker doesn't work.  (She tried changing the battery.  It's just broken).
  • The interior smells like coolant sometimes.
  • It has some scratches.
  • The suspension is okay but not perfect.  This is an old car.
  • It runs fuel trim codes.  It runs lean.
  • The ABS is broken.  My daughter heard noises that make her think the problem is the pump, but she knew she was getting rid of it and didn't look into it too much.  Stability controls are off.
  • It probably needs a brake job pretty soon, too.  The ones in the back were done within the past 18 months.  They should be fine.  The ones in the front will need work.

Unknown:

  • This car's history before 2012.
  • Its problems seem kind of systemic and related to each other.  Several very good, very experienced mechanics have different theories.  No one really knows.
  • Whether the engine was accurately represented to the guy who bought and installed it.
  • If not, how old the engine really is.

This is:

  • for PARTS, SCRAP OR REPAIR
  • unlikely to pass inspection without work
  • a TWO TON + vehicle that DOESN'T STOP OR GO AS PREDICTABLY AS IT SHOULD

This isn't:

  • A GOOD FIRST CAR FOR A NEW DRIVER UNLESS YOU WANT TO PUT IN SOME SERIOUS WORK
  • a reliable daily driver

Buick Avenir will be made...as a trim level instead of a car

Fri, Sep 30 2016

Almost two years after Buick showed the gorgeous Avenir concept, the company announced the Avenir name will reach production. Specifically, it will be a top-tier trim level for 2018 model year Buicks. It's taking a page from GMC's Denali, Lincoln's Black Label, and, well, plenty of examples of extra-fancy sauce. This is disappointing news for fans of the concept, but they can take solace in the fact that the Avenir's good looks are starting to rub off on production Buicks, such as the new LaCrosse. For those interested in what this new Avenir trim will bring to the table, it's a similar formula to what many other auto brands are doing. Buick specifically compares Avenir with the Denali trim for GMC. Models with the trim will get a special 3D mesh grille inspired by the Avista concept, large wheels and unique trim finishes outside. Inside, Avenir models will receive a nicer interior, which Buick generically described as having "unique seat details" and "modern trim materials." Cars equipped with the package will also get a smattering of Avenir badges. Avenir looks like a win-win: interested buyers get some extra cachet and bragging rights and Buick gets to load high-profit options on it cars and SUVs. Buick's inspiration for the Avenir trim is a bit strange, though. The company says it is "inspired by Buick's evolving customer base," which includes women and owners of competing products. Apparently both groups are buying Buicks in greater numbers, and the company also says that many of their customers opt for the most expensive trims. While it seems straightforward to tailor a package for luxury-seeking buyers, we're not sure what would make a package specifically appeal to women and people with competitors' vehicles. That being said, Buick isn't as patronizing as Cosmopolitan was with its car. In fact, quite the opposite. With Avenir, Buick is cashing in on new customers that willing to pay for luxury plain and simple, without any pandering. Related Video: Auto News Buick Luxury denali buick avenir

It looks like Buick is working on a new Regal GS

Mon, Jun 5 2017

When Buick revealed its Regal-badged version of the Opel Insignia/Holden Commodore sedan and wagon, it left out one significant model, the GS. The high-performance Regal was missing in action, but these new spy photos seem to indicate one is coming soon. It looks like it will be pretty subtle on the outside. Upon close examination, we can see that each side of the front bumper features a much larger grille than the normal Regal Sportback and TourX. The thick upper borders on the grilles also look like good places for some LED accent or fog lights. These larger grilles appear to be the only significant difference to the front, though. On the sides, there are slightly deeper side skirts than those on a standard Sportback, and the rear bumper looks to be lifted from the TourX, but without the wagon's aluminum cladding. One other indication that this is a high-performance Regal is the car's front braking equipment. We can make out a Cadillac logo on the front brake calipers, which shows that this isn't running standard Regal stoppers. As for what's under the hood, it's tough to say, but we don't think it will use a turbocharged four-cylinder as the previous generation did. Instead, we think it may be using a V6. That's a hard maybe. The base Regal's turbo four makes as much power as the old GS, and although Buick could crank up the boost for more power, it could also make use of the V6 it will offer overseas. In the mechanically identical Commodore, a 308-horsepower V6 will be available along with a 9-speed automatic and the same type of all-wheel-drive system as the Ford Focus RS. This option would make the upcoming GS more powerful than the old one, and the new standard model, plus offer all-wheel drive. We would like to see even more power than 308, since the top-dog previous-generation Insignia OPC had a 325-horsepower V6. Buick Riviera Concept hits the floor in Shanghai

Sat, 20 Apr 2013

Here we have a concept in the true sense of the term. The Buick Riviera you see here - the name of which was last used in production back in 1999 - is said to preview Buick's future styling direction, which means we should expect to see more flowing body shapes to go along with new versions of the marque's classic waterfall grille design. Oh, and we don't believe there's a single porthole in sight.
Powered by Buick's so-called dual-mode wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle propulsion system (we'll stick with the W-PHEV acronym) that allows the car to be charged wirelessly just by driving atop a special charging mat on the ground, the car's powertrain is just as futuristic as its exterior shape.
Other high-tech bits include holographic projections on the windshield showing the driver what's around him, with input coming from 10 high-res cameras and 18 micro high-precision sensors. The car also sports 4G wireless connectivity so that its occupants are always connected.
