Pacific NW car from new 40,000 original miles Fantastic survivor car Up for bids here on eBay is this very well preserved Buick Century. Bought new at Kauffman Buick in Spokane Washington, the car has stayed local since then with just 3 owners. The car features mostly original paint, an all original interior, and excellent sheet metal top to bottom. Survivor cars like this become a little harder to find with each passing year. This old Buick not only has a great pedigree, but is road worthy enough to take you any amount of distance without worry.
The car is finished in Glacier White over Spray Green. It's mostly original paint and is in incredible condition for its age. That said, be prepared to find some areas with thin paint, small scrapes, touched up chips, etc. The overall condition is "WOW" but it does show some light patina. The body is rock solid with no rust issues, no bubbling, no blistering, no problems. The car has really good panel fit, all doors open and close precisely. Tires are new Coker Classics with about 30 miles on them. The car's chrome is all original and still looking really terrific after 55 years. Very little pitting or flaws anywhere, the brightwork on this car stands tall. All lights and lenses on the car are in great shape as well. The distinctive '58 grill is in good original condition. Interesting to see the front end similarities with other GM models from this year, namely the first-year Impala. The stainless trim shows a few dings scattered about. The glass is a strong point on this car, it's all original EZ-Eye Safety Plate with no hard water spotting or scratches. Windshield has one very small chip off to the side and up high, otherwise it's like new. The hardtop design really opens up the car when the windows are down. Fender top gunsights are in great shape. Not sure why the paint looks blue in this photo, green tones can sometimes fool the camera. The trunk shows a little age, the mat and side panels are original. Trunk floor is solid with no water damage, the weatherstripping is original to the car. Time warp interior with original upholstery and carpet. Roomy back seat area, excellent headliner. Door panels and hardware are about as nice as they come. The dash and padding are in great shape with no damage or splits. Dash facia shows a little patina in spots, however all of the switchgear looks like new. There's a couple of things to look into here - the radio and clock aren't working, the wipers have been upgraded to electric but aren't operating for some reason. Everything else functions well - horn, heater, fan, signals, lights, interior lighting - all working correctly. The 300HP 364 Nailhead fires to life easily and runs out great. No smoke, no ticking, this is a good running motor. Has plenty of power and feels right at home on the freeway. Power steering and power brakes make around town driving easy. The Dynaflow operates with the smoothness it is known for. The car has good braking power, tracks straight, steers well and basically floats down the road with no drama. Be prepared to see a lot of thumbs up, there's something about this car that attracts a lot of attention. Instruments show good readings on the road. The car is optioned with a "Speed-Minder", a buzzer that sounds when you pass a pre-set speed. I have it set to 85. The undercarriage is all original with no patching or signs of damage. While not detailed, its real beauty lies in the fidelity of the sheet metal down here. From the floor pans to the inner fenders and rocker panels, this Buick is an untouched example of one of GM's finest designs. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images. Watch 14 hot rides take over concept car lawn at Pebble Beach
Sun, Aug 16 2015The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is an annual celebration of the beautiful, old cars that grace Monterey Car Week. But Monterey – and Pebble – features lots of newer metal, too, and that includes the concept lawn at Pebble Beach. Now, "concept lawn" isn't a totally accurate name anymore, and you'll see why in the list below. This year especially, plenty of production cars can be found in the area once reserved for the conceptual. Still, we're happy to see them. Here's what's featured this year: Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Audi R8 BAC Mono Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R Buick Avenir Galpin-Fisker Rocket Speedster Hyundai HCD-16 Vision G Coupe Icona Volcano Infiniti Q60 Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 Maserati Ghibli McLaren 570S Rolls-Royce Wraith By our count, that's seven concepts out of fourteen cars. But it still makes for one hot group of metal. Check 'em out in the gallery above. 2014 Buick Regal GS
Mon, 09 Sep 2013A few months ago I drove the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and wrote up a First Drive review of it. For all of my quibbles with that sedan (and I had a fair number), I understand that it speaks to the heart of what new Buick loyalists like in a car; it's roomy, has a cushy ride and is as placid as a summer's morning at highway speeds.
Those qualities, while undeniably desirable, don't mean a whole lot to me personally. I prefer sedans that conjure up words like "nimble," "punchy" or even "raucous" on occasion. So, directionally, the high-performance GS version of the 2014 Buick Regal is more my cup of tea than any other car in the company's current range.
In fact, I'd already come to know the Regal GS from its 2012 model year introduction, and grown more than a little fond of the sporting sedan in its original front-wheel-drive, six-speed-manual guise. The fast, sweet-handling car with well-sorted controls may have suffered from a slight identity crisis in terms of pricing (and may still), but it was undeniably fun to drive. So, when I heard that the GS was coming to market for 2014 with optional all-wheel drive (albeit only in combination with a six-speed automatic transmission), I was stoked to have another go and concentrated my driving impressions on the AWD car.
Looking back at how and why GM saved Buick
Mon, Dec 19 2016Still uncomfortably fresh in our collective minds is 2008, the year when the US economy tanked, auto sales collapsed, and both General Motors and Chrysler endured federally managed bankruptcies. Then 2009, when, among other draconian measures, the government task forces dictating what they were compelled to do to earn taxpayer financial support ordered thousands of dealers cut and GM to discontinue four of its eight US brands. Three of those chosen for GM's axe were fairly obvious: off-road icon Hummer had become politically incorrect, Swedish-born Saab was a perennial money loser, and product-starved Saturn had sadly sagged after its strong early start. On the other hand, high-volume value brand Chevrolet, luxury Cadillac, and high-profit GMC seemed clear keepers. That left Pontiac and Buick, both boasting strong brand heritage and histories but both languishing at the time with lackluster image and sales. Most believed that "old man's car" Buick would be killed and once-youthful Pontiac and its performance image would be revived. So few understood why when exactly the opposite happened: Buick lived, Pontiac died. One key factor was Buick's long, distinguished history in China. In the early 20th century, many of that country's most influential citizens owned, drove, or were driven in Buicks. By 1930, one out of every six cars on the roads in Shanghai was a Buick. So when GM launched vehicle production at a Shanghai joint-venture plant in 1999, the chosen brand was Buick. Today it remains GM's best-selling brand in that fast-growing market. Another was an appealing new design direction that began with a shapely 2006 three-row crossover concept called Enclave. Inspired by the Buick Velite concept convertible of 2004, its curvaceous "form vocabulary," GM Design vice president Ed Welburn said at the time, previewed coming Buick production car and CUV design. "The body shape flows, like there's wind blowing over it," he enthused, adding that the Enclave concept's richly trimmed cabin foretold "a renaissance in interior design for GM." And when the production Enclave arrived for 2008, followed by platform siblings from Saturn and GMC (and later Chevrolet), it indeed caught the public's eye and started selling well. And once past GM's painful and embarrassing bankruptcy, Buick has been on a major roll. Continuing to sell strongly in China while growing substantially in the US, it has enjoyed four straight years of global sales records.
