1976 Buick Century Sedan 4-door 350 on 2040-cars
Cave Creek, Arizona, United States
This is a real great survivor car. It was donated to a charity and had been sitting for years. They couldn't start it, so they sold it as-is. I put some fuel in it and it started right up. The car is in remarkable condition. It has 51,000 and change miles and it runs and drives like it was new. There are no squeaks or rattles. The steering and ride are both amazing. I am a little embarrassed that I like this so much. There is no restoration that can match a factory ride. These cars are built like tanks with a full steel frame and bumpers that can actually bump something. I see no evidence of the car ever having been smoked in and the whole interior is very clean. I had the front seat reupholstered as there were a couple of splits in the seams. It shows very nicely. The carpet is clean with no wear spots and I think it has the factory mats that are in good shape. I put a set of chrome wheels on it as the originals were quite dry rotted and if the auction meets my reserve, I will install a new set of premium radials with the factory hubcaps back on it. The engine runs very well, but there are still remnants of old smelly fuel still lingering. This is a Buick that actually has a Buick engine. This is the 350 four barrel with a turbo 350 automatic transmission. Very reliable and if you drive it right you can get 17 or 18 miles per gallon. It will run well on regular pump gas. I replaced the water pump, it wasn't leaking, but the hose connection was crudded up. I installed new spark plug wires, air filter, changed the oil, greased the chassis and performed the usual minor maintenance issues. I checked all of the lights, changed the wiper blades and just cleaned up the car in general. I found nothing out of order on the car, it was just parked ten or fifteen years ago and driven very little. As you can see I didn't detail the motor. I don't want to hide anything. The car is what it is, an honest, solid, unmolested 38 year old car. It will make great transportation or you can shine it up and go to shows. I repaired the fillers around the rear tail lights. They are going to stay together for now, but a new set would really be nice. I guess this is a pretty common problem for these 70's cars. There are two rust spots, one at the bottom of the trunk drop and the other about the size of a half dollar over the wheel opening. These must be from something spilled in the trunk because there is zero rust anywhere else on the car. All of the glass is good and the weather stripping is quiet. The windows don't wiggle around and everything about the car is tight as a tick. The doors shut like a vault. The only nagging thing to me is a crack in the top of the dash. A dash mat will cover it completely. This has the original scratchy AM radio, tilt wheel, A/C, power steering and brakes, and it all seems to be in good shape. I don't know how popular these cars are. There are not a lot of them around that haven't been driven into the ground. I bought it as a donor for my '39 Buick, but I don't have the heart to cut it up. I am offering it for sale with a modest reserve. The usual E-bay rules apply, no Nigerian Princes, No third part Armenian Checks, all funds must clear my bank before the car leaves my possession. I can arrange shipping anywhere. I am selling this to get more room, so if it is not picked up in 30 days it will have to go to commercial storage. Because of the age I must sell it as-is. I have a clear Arizona title and it is registered for about 4 more years. |

Looking back at how and why GM saved Buick
Mon, Dec 19 2016Still uncomfortably fresh in our collective minds is 2008, the year when the US economy tanked, auto sales collapsed, and both General Motors and Chrysler endured federally managed bankruptcies. Then 2009, when, among other draconian measures, the government task forces dictating what they were compelled to do to earn taxpayer financial support ordered thousands of dealers cut and GM to discontinue four of its eight US brands. Three of those chosen for GM's axe were fairly obvious: off-road icon Hummer had become politically incorrect, Swedish-born Saab was a perennial money loser, and product-starved Saturn had sadly sagged after its strong early start. On the other hand, high-volume value brand Chevrolet, luxury Cadillac, and high-profit GMC seemed clear keepers. That left Pontiac and Buick, both boasting strong brand heritage and histories but both languishing at the time with lackluster image and sales. Most believed that "old man's car" Buick would be killed and once-youthful Pontiac and its performance image would be revived. So few understood why when exactly the opposite happened: Buick lived, Pontiac died. One key factor was Buick's long, distinguished history in China. In the early 20th century, many of that country's most influential citizens owned, drove, or were driven in Buicks. By 1930, one out of every six cars on the roads in Shanghai was a Buick. So when GM launched vehicle production at a Shanghai joint-venture plant in 1999, the chosen brand was Buick. Today it remains GM's best-selling brand in that fast-growing market. Another was an appealing new design direction that began with a shapely 2006 three-row crossover concept called Enclave. Inspired by the Buick Velite concept convertible of 2004, its curvaceous "form vocabulary," GM Design vice president Ed Welburn said at the time, previewed coming Buick production car and CUV design. "The body shape flows, like there's wind blowing over it," he enthused, adding that the Enclave concept's richly trimmed cabin foretold "a renaissance in interior design for GM." And when the production Enclave arrived for 2008, followed by platform siblings from Saturn and GMC (and later Chevrolet), it indeed caught the public's eye and started selling well. And once past GM's painful and embarrassing bankruptcy, Buick has been on a major roll. Continuing to sell strongly in China while growing substantially in the US, it has enjoyed four straight years of global sales records.
GM recalls 500K Chevy Camaros for ignition-switch defect
Fri, 13 Jun 2014General Motors issued a recall for more than a half million Chevrolet Camaros on Friday morning because of an ignition-switch safety hazard that mirrors the one at the center of the company's current crisis.
The problem affects Camaro models from the 2010 to 2014 model years. Approximately 464,712 cars are impacted in the United States, and 511,528 overall in North America. GM will alter the Camaro key to a more standard design, and will notify car owners with a recall notice in the mail.
In an announcement, the company said the ignition switches on the Camaros are fundamentally different parts than the older ignition switches found on defective cars that are responsible for killing at least 13 people and causing 54 crashes.
Next Buick Verano headed to Shanghai Motor Show
Wed, Apr 15 2015Buick is a big deal in China and ranks third in automotive brand popularity there, according to a recent poll. It should come as little surprise, then, that the company is using the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show to debut the next-gen version of the Verano. We are even getting a shadowy tease of the small sedan's look ahead of the April 19 unveiling. Actually called the Wei Lang in China, Buick says the redesigned Verano takes styling cues from the Riviera concept from 2013 Shanghai show and the recent Avenir, as well. Neither inspiration seems too obvious based on this teaser image, but the small sedan does gain two creases down its side: one arches through the front door handle and the other picks up over the rear fender. Buick isn't even hinting at what powers the Verano in China and simply asserts that the model sets class benchmarks for "performance, safety and comfort" there. Of course, as with many foreign market models, it's possible that the sedan could use different engines or wear different altered styling when it arrives in the US. Buick Verano Sports Sedan Named "Wei Lang" in Chinese, Will Make Debut in Shanghai on April 19 2015-04-14 SHANGHAI – Shanghai GM today announced that the Verano, Buick's new-generation sports sedan, has been given the name of "Wei Lang" in Chinese. It will make its debut in Shanghai on April 19, on the eve of Auto Shanghai 2015. As a new strategic model for the Buick brand, the Verano will offer a refreshing driving experience through its stylish and dynamic exterior, exquisite and comfortable interior, and precise and powerful performance. The Verano was inspired by the 2013 Buick Riviera concept car and captures the design essence of the Buick Avenir concept car, which debuted at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Verano demonstrates Buick's insight into the aesthetic preferences of Chinese consumers. It embodies the innovative reimagining of Buick's classic design elements, exemplifying the elegance and dynamism of Buick's new-generation products. It is expected to set new benchmarks for performance, safety and comfort in its class. Like the all-new Excelle GT, which was launched earlier this year, the Verano will serve as a strategic model in Buick's bid for a stronger presence in China's mid-range vehicle segment. General Motors traces its roots back to 1908. GM has 11 joint ventures, two wholly owned foreign enterprises and more than 58,000 employees in China.
