Up for sale is my daily driver BMW E30 M3 with an obd1 s52 e36 M3 engine swap. This car has been my daily for the
last two years which includes two trips to Montana where the only stops made were for gas. One of those return
trips was a cruise out to Portland, down through the Redwood Forests, Napa Valley, and back into LA. I wouldn't
hesitate to drive this car cross country and is exceptionally comfortable as well as economical. I'm only selling
her to fund another project I have in the works.
Build:
The block is from a '98 M3 and has about 83k miles on the bottom end, the head is off of a '95 m3 and has about 4k
miles on it since rebuild. The 5 speed transmission is from an '02 z3 M off of a s54, one of the strongest 5 speed
from BMW. I can't stress how much I love this transmission's gearing, and the shift feedback is the best of any car
I've driven. The differential is a 2.79LSD. The clutch style LSD is super tight and locks up exactly as it should.
Car has an unkown brand lightweight flywheel. Thanks to the combination of the z3 M transmission and the 2.79 diff,
it gets off the line very quickly but still cruises at highway speed at an acceptable RPM. The car is currently
running a miller W.A.R. chip ECU and can be easily hooked up to a computer and dyno tuned to get the most out of
any engine setup you desire. The car also has (unknown brand) shorty headers, Castro Motorsport air box (cruise
control motor was removed for the installation of the air box by the previous owner), racing dynamic adjustable
sway bars, bilstein HD struts, and H&R sport springs. The wheels are 16" Epsilon Mesh, a BMW dealer option from the
635csi and are one of my favorite parts of the car.
Recent Repairs/ Upgrades:
The entire fuel system has been replaced as I found rust starting to form in the original gas tank and didn't want
to take any chances. Included in the replacement, new BMW filler neck coupler, rebuilt and flow matched CaTuned
injectors, new OEM e30 M3 fuel tank, new BMW fuel lines, new BMW low pressure high volume in tank fuel pump, new
TRM external fuel pump, new fuel filter, new fuel pressure regulator, and new fuel rail.
Other maintenance performed includes, replacement of all 4 wheel bearings in the last 4 years, as well as brake
pads and rotors. Motor mounts are from a BMW E46. New turner motorsport front swaybar endlinks, new braided brake
lines from blunt tech, new wind shield, evo trunk seal, new camber plates from ground control, tie rods replaced
two years ago, M5 guibo replaced two years ago, new turner motorsport SI board, new bluetooth alpine head unit, new
oil separator, new heater core, new thermostat, new BMW OEM water pump, 6 month old front tires, 18 month old rear
tires. New crack free dash. New LED OBC lightbar.
Planned future work:
Most obvious is that the car needs new paint, as the clear coat is in poor condition. The original color is Lachs
Silber and the previous owner painted the car Sterling but the engine bay and trunk are still Lachs Silber,
returning to the original color was my eventual plan. I was also planning on replacing the front bumper prior to
paint, as it was reattached poorly by the previous owner and has a small crack (pictured). The body is rust free
with the exception of a small spot under the wind shield on the passenger side (pictured) that will need to be
treated in the future, but no rust/rot was found hiding under the original windshield when replaced. There are two
small dents that can probably be removed through paintless dent removal (also pictured). The rear subframe bushings
and rear trailing arm bushings are original, and replacements are included in the sale.
My next project on the M3 was to recondition the air conditioning in the car but I still needed to source a e36
compressor and an e30 evaporator. As well as have the two custom lines made to complete the system. I bought the
car with a custom multi-amp stereo system in the trunk that works well, though it never has been a priority for me
on this car. It's up to the next owner's discretion whether to keep or remove it.
The driver's seat is in great condition and the passenger seat is in good shape other than some material cracking
on the upper shoulder bolster. The rear seat is in acceptable shape for its age but I had planned on eventually
recovering it. The A-pillar trim needs to be replaced or recovered as the sun as caused the vinyl to shrink and
separate from the plastic.
The car is currently driving around on the factory '88 M3 catalytic converter and muffler. It hasn't shown any
signs of needing a new cat but the muffler is starting to crack around the welds.
The car received it's rebuilt title from a driver side door incident. The original door was replaced with another
factory E30 M3 door. It has also had some sort of small repair to the rear (I would guess at the same time as the
previous incident), as I have seen hard to find signs of repair work. I don't have pictures of the accident as it
happened long before my ownership. The car tracks straight, drives well, and is always within factory alignment
spec. I just want to be honest with next owner so they have as much history on the car as possible, and get to
enjoy it as I have.
Extra Parts
I have boxes full of extra mechanical parts for this car that are included in the sale. Red Label 413 DME, factory
s50 exhaust manifolds, new rear subframe bushings, new rear trailing arm bushings, and A/C components.
If you have any additional questions please feel free to ask and thank you for looking.

Tesla in talks with BMW about batteries, charging collaborations
Wed, Nov 26 2014With Toyota and Daimler no longer holding Tesla shares, the electric vehicle company might be looking for a new partner – possibly a Bavarian one. In a new interview with Germany's Der Spiegel, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that he has had talks with BMW execs about future collaboration. "We are talking about whether we can collaborate in battery technology or charging stations," Musk said in the interview, according to Reuters. However, a Tesla spokesperson has tempered things by saying no formal agreements are in place at the moment. In the same interview, Musk reportedly praised BMW's use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic in its i sub-brand offerings, and said he would like to have a battery factory in Germany in the next five or six years. The possibility of technological cooperation between Tesla and BMW has been a hot topic this year. In June, Musk reportedly met with BMW execs, and the two companies were also rumored to have met with Nissan to discuss charging technology. When Daimler sold off its shares, there was talk of it opening the way for possible collaboration between the two automakers, as well.
Giles Taylor succeeds Ian Cameron as head of Rolls-Royce design
Thu, 28 Jun 2012Back in the day, a Rolls-Royce looked pretty much the same as a Bentley, but with a different grille. Once BMW took over Rolls-Royce, however, it was faced with the challenge of visually separating itself from its former sister brand. And most would agree that it did so pretty well. But its cars have looked pretty much the same ever since. What Rolls-Royce needs, then, is a bit of a design shake-up. And that's just what this latest appointment could bring.
After a baker's dozen years as design director at Rolls-Royce (and twenty years designing for the BMW Group altogether), Ian Cameron is retiring from his post. In his place, Rolls-Royce has named Giles Taylor as its new director of design. In his new capacity, Taylor will report directly to BMW Group chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk, and be responsible for all design matters related to the Rolls-Royce brand and its products.
Taylor was promoted to the role from his previous position as head of exterior design for the marque, a position he's held for barely more than a year. We'll be eagerly watching to see what the veteran British car designer has in store for the future of Rolls-Royce. In the meantime you can read the full announcement below.
BMW i8's three-cylinder sounds like it's shaping up quite nicely
Tue, 25 Mar 2014We've run across some rather interesting news... or perhaps we should say interesting sounds. The folks from Bimmerpost have scrounged up a short video showing a preproduction BMW i8 running through a few gears in Sport mode at a quick pace, and if you were concerned that the somewhat eco-friendly nature of the upcoming German sports car would neuter its ability to stir the aural senses, fret not.
Judging by the lovely noise coming from the engine compartment of the i8 in the video, BMW's expertise in tuning high-strung, small-bore engines - remember, BMW Motorrad has quite the penchant for well-conceived motorcycle engines - has come through loud and clear. Now, it's worth mentioning that BMW's controversial Active Sound technology will be included with the i8, so the production car may not sound exactly like this version, which is running with the tech disabled. Owners won't have the ability to disable Active Sound on production i8s.
In related news, Bimmerpost reports that BMW will equip the i8 with an external Active Sound Design system to go along with its Pedestrian Protection System. That means those on the outside will likely hear piped engine recordings from the rear and a sort of "howl" from the front in order to warn pedestrians that the otherwise quiet (when running on electricity, that is) car is approaching. It will also feature technology that can stop the car before contacting a pedestrian.
