BMW is giving sportscar rivals something to think about with the Z4 sDrive35is.

BMW likes its sportscars to show a touch of aggression to go with their electrifying pace and the current Z4 had that from the outset, despite the concession to comfort that is its clever folding metal roof. With the tin-top hood stowed, the sun out and the engine on song, the Z4 sDrive35i produces one of the most evocative driving experiences to be had for less than ?50,000. What more could the keen driver want? How about launch control, a double clutch gearbox, an even naughtier exhaust note and around 60 extra horsepower?

In adding an 1M motor to its sDrive35i Z4, BMW produced the sDrive35is model. The 2014 Z4 edged that little bit closer to the de facto BMW M-car It is also an important car for the market where the Z4 competes against the other high performanacet wo-seater roadsters and coupes that can be purchased for similar money. Make no mistake a Z4 3.0 or 2.8

is a quantum leap dowm from the is. The "S" is worth every penny of the $20,000 plus over the lesser models.

Its hard to believe, but with 300bhp, the BMW Z4 sDrive35i was beginning to look a little anaemic compared to its rivals. The TT RS from Audi with 335bhp, the 355bhp Mercedes SLK 55 AMG and even Nissan 322bhp 370z were thumbing their noses at BMW and that couldn't be allowed to stand. If pressed, BMW would probably identify the Boxster S as the car its range-topping Z4s needed to beat but the performance arms race had meant that the Porsche was the only equivalent car to retain horsepower parity with the top line Z4s. BMW needed to act and it did with the 350bhp/370lb/feet Torque sDrive35is.

The twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that powers the Z4 sDrive35is is a formidable piece of engineering. used widely in the BMW range wherever some serious performance is called for or a particularly weighty vehicle needs a sharp turn of speed without recourse to V8 power. A 340bhp output is 34bhp up on the sDrive35i and a big slug of power for a 1,500kg rear-wheel-drive sportscar. It is achieved with the aid of BMW's High Precision Direct Injection technology which also increases torque from 400Nm to 450Nm and as much as 500Nm when the engine's temporary overboost function is engaged.

As standard, the sDrive35is comes with the BMW M DCT Double Clutch Transmission which is marshaled through steering wheel-mounted paddles. It's capable of extremely fast shift response times and has an integrated launch control system that balances power and traction off the line for the perfect getaway. The Z4s roof will get almost as much attention as the contents of its engine bay because, following the lead of the BMW 3-Series Convertible, it is made out of aluminum . BMW has set out to disprove the school of thought that says folding hard-top roofs are a bad idea in focused sports cars with a light weight electro-hydraulic arrangement that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. The need to make space to stow a great slab of ironwork to keep the rain out can deal a fatal blow to the styling of a convertible, particularly a compact two-seater like the Z4 but BMW designers appear to have avoided this. The telltale distended rear end isn't in evidence and roof up or roof down, the Z4 looks taught and well-proportioned.

The bulging rear haunches hint at the cars potency while the subtle cutaways down the flanks make it a sleeker proposition than its angular predecessor. The sDrive35is models benefit further from the inclusion of the M Sport body styling package with its more aggressive front bumper and two-part diffuser at the rear. Theres also the M Sport Adaptive suspension system that sits the car 10mm lower than standard.

The car is bigger than the model it replaced which helped it manage the inclusion of a folding metal roof so seamlessly. At 4,239mm, the length is up 148mm and the 1,790mm width is a 9mm increase. This has yielded more space inside as well as the extra capacity out back to drop that roof into. Headroom with the canopy raised is 44mm better than in the old Z4, there is 43mm more elbow room and shoulder room is enhanced by 20mm. The boot is a useful 310 litres with the roof up but shrinks to 180 litres when it is folded. This is supplemented by a 15.5-litre interior storage area behind the seats. When you factor in the DCT gearbox, the M power upgrade and the special sports exhaust system on the sDrive35is, ?4,000($9,400 US) premium over the sDrive35i model looks like good business.

The pricing of the sDrive35is also puts it in direct competition with the Audi TT RS while significantly undercutting the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG. The less powerful sDrive35i dominates the Porsche Boxster S, ensuring that BMW has all the bases covered with its Z4 range.

We're used to being surprised by the economy and emissions figures that BMW manages to extract from even its higher performance models but even by the German marque standards, 31mpg from a 340bhp(350hp under boost) roadster is impressive stuff. A 160bhp Mazda MX-5 only returns 37mpg on the combined cycle. The BMWs overall running costs will be helped further by CO2 emissions of 201g/km which like its economy, is identical to the sDrive35i version.

BMW isn't used to its performance models occupying any position other than the top spot on the podium and when a slew of powerful two-seater sportscars emerged onto the market, it was forced to act to keep the Z4 relevant. The resulting sDrive35is version of the marques folding hard-top roadster should be enough to put BMW back in contention at the very top of the ?50,000 sportscar segment.

The sDrive35is actually looks like very good value. For ??4,000 or so over the sDrive35i model, Z4 buyers can have the DCT dual clutch gearbox, a special aggressive-sounding exhaust, adaptive suspension, enhanced styling and a host of other extras. It sounds like good business and the manageable running costs of the sDrive35is are the icing on the cake

Also as the '14 Z4S is the closest 2nd gen car to the M(M built 1M engine, M faster shifting for 2014 DCT Gearbox, Larger brakes for 14,M alloys, steering wheel and body, and sport seats) It runs with the V8 M3 0-60 now. BMW just could not afford it to overshadow the new M4 coming out, so no official M designation. So I felt the car being 95% M deserved M badging. If you do not like these they come off as easy as they went on. I also have a 1/2" M lip spoiler being painted for the trunk. Again no drilling so reversible if you don't like it. Engine not broken in yet so can't REV over 5,000 RPM, but the engine pulls like a freight train when overboost is engaged. Very Impressive!

These are your top 10 worst-selling vehicles of 2012

Despite 2012 being the best year of auto sales this country has seen since 2007, not every vehicle got an equally large share of the sales pie. Some barely got a sliver, as evidenced by this year's list of the top 10 worst-selling vehicles of 2012. We've dug through sales data from every automaker to come up with this year's list and, like last year, we've set some parameters to ensure it includes legitimately bad-selling vehicles. The first parameter is a starting MSRP under $100,000, which automatically excludes what's parked in most one-percenters' garages. We're also excluding vehicles cancelled in 2012, even if they garnered sales through the end of the year while dealerships sold off remaining inventory. This includes models like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and last year's worst-seller, the Acura RL. Next, vehicles are considered as they are reported by the automaker, which means that, while sales of the Murano CrossCabriolet were probably low enough to make the list, because Nissan reports only one number for all Murano sales, it was excluded. Cadillac, however, reports sales of the Escalade EXT separately from the Escalade, hence its repeat appearance. Finally, there was the question of whether or not eligibility should be given to Suzuki vehicles, as the brand announced in November that it would end sales in the US as soon as its current inventory ran out. We decided Suzuki vehicles should be included as the brand was offering 2013 models at the time of the announcement, and as far as we can tell, inventory levels remained high enough to satisfy demand through the end of the year. BMW 2 Series, X5 get their M Performance parts on

BMW models come in a number of flavors, from their standard guises to M Sport variants and M Performance models to full-on M muscle machines. But if you want to pick and choose the degree to which you want your Bimmer upgraded along the path to M, BMW automaker offers its M Performance Parts line. The Bavarian automaker already offers these performance and stylistic add-ons for a number of models, and has now released new kits for both the 2 Series Coupe and the latest X5 crossover.
The catalog for the 2 Series includes an available lowered suspension kit, upgraded brakes, new alloys, carbon aero kit and interior trim enhancements. There's also a power kit available for the 220d model that squeezes out an extra 16 horsepower for a total of 200, and a limited-slip differential and exhaust silencer for the M235i.
Upgrades to the X5 crossover, meanwhile, also include a carbon aero kit and interior trim package. The X5 xDrive35i model also gets a power kit boosting output by 20 ponies to 326 hp and an exhaust silencer. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: [00:00:00] Hey, everybody. It's Greg Migliore, and today I am driving the 2015 BMW X6 M. This is the crossover coupe that is sort of a halo SUV for BMW. It's got its naysayers but I like it. I think it's a number of things enthusiasts like. It's fast, it's curvy, it looks good, it's fun to drive, and this one that I'm [00:00:30] testing out is absolutely loaded. It comes in at more than $115,000. Now that might seem like a lot for an X6, even in M trim, but you're getting a lot of stuff here. This has got a twin-turbo V8, pumps out 567 horsepower. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which I think is a good one, and it runs with all-wheel drive. There's a number of M treatments like the wheels, some of the aerodynamic treatments up front. [00:01:00] It looks sporty and it also has a good tough crossover feel, but it still has almost a car feel as well because the X6 was designed to have a bit of a coupe dynamic. Now inside, is really a beautiful surroundings. We've got lots of trim. It looks like carbon fiber. We've got different color stitching. There's black trim, there's orange trim, there is some of the M colors of light blue and red trim on the steering wheel. It definitely looks like a [00:01:30] loaded BMW, but also an M BMW series. You lay on the throttle you can get away from stoplights quickly, no trouble. Sounds good. There's a nice exhaust note. It got moving. It's a quick car. It can get to 60 miles an hour in about four seconds, which when you consider this SUV is above 5,200 pounds, that's pretty quick. Some people question the point of an X6 in general, [00:02:00] and especially an X6 M. You're taking an SUV with less capability than an X5 and some other SUVs in this segment and then cutting it down and making a design statement. I say exactly. That's exactly what you're doing. I like a vehicle that looks like this that has those coupe-like stylings in the back. It's a little more of a cutting edge, curvy design. I think all of that's great. Then, if you're going to do different M versions of cars, why not do an X6 M?
