Vehicle Overview BMW's Z3 series of sports cars was replaced in 2003 by a longer, wider, all-new Z4 duo. Electric power steering was a first for BMW.
For 2006, the Z4 receives a thorough mid-cycle freshening. Exterior details have been restyled, while updated transmissions complement a new range of inline-six-cylinder engines. Equipment changes include a revised electronic stability system.
Exterior BMW's two-seater displays a blend of convex and concave surfaces, coupled with deeply sculpted bodysides. The Z4 has more edges, especially at the rear, than its rounded predecessor. For 2006, changes include a larger air dam, new fog lamps and updated taillights.

The Z4 coupe incorporates a curvaceous roof that flows seamlessly from the windshield to the stern, ending abruptly ahead of a subtle deck spoiler.
Interior Other than its two-passenger capacity, the Z4's cockpit is completely different from the Z3's. Controls are well spaced on a distinctive dashboard, and they receive upgraded materials for 2006. Full-width dash panels are either wood or brushed aluminum. Simulated leather upholstery is standard.
Under the Hood This Z4 has the 3.2-liter I6 DOHC 24 valve engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard in all Z4s.
Safety Side-impact airbags, knee airbags and antilock brakes are standard. BMW's Dynamic Stability Control electronic stability system offers improved response to brake fade, panic stops, hill starts and wet-weather conditions. A cutoff switch for the front passenger airbag is included.

We hope you're ready to dip into your configurator savings account, because it's time to start speccing out the 2014 BMW 4 Series, the coupe having just arrived in the virtual world. There are four possible opening gambits: the 428i for $40,500, the 428i xDrive for $42,500, the 435i for $46,000 or the 435i xDrive for $48,000. After you've chosen your first move, there are three trim options: the $1,400 Luxury Line that features lots of chrome and wood (shown), the $1,700 Sport Line that adds lots of gloss black and contrasting trim color and stitching, or the $3,100 M Sport that offers the M Estoril Blue hue and lots of M-division specific accessories. Starting with the 435i xDrive and M Sport, we then added items like the 19-inch wheels ($900), the Dynamic Handling Package ($1,000), Cold Weather Package ($700), Premium Package ($2,200), Tech Package ($3,150) and the Lighting Package ($1,900) on top of any other box we could check. The total, after the $925 destination and handling charge: $66,749.
Good news just keeps coming for BMW, as Consumer Reports has just handed out a stunner of a verdict - the M235i, a spritely, 320-horsepower coupe that starts at just $43,100 has bested the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Porsche 911, vehicles that can easily cost twice as much and come to battle with considerably more power. CR awarded the spiritual successor to the 1 Series M Coupe a score of 98 out of 100, beating out the 911 and the Stingray by three and six points, respectively. In fact, the M235i is remarkably close to the Tesla Model S' 99, making it one of the highest scores CR has ever handed out. It's also, not surprisingly, the highest-rated BMW ever. Of the M235i's many attributes, Consumer Reports cited the car's performance potential as well as its quiet ride and comfort for front-seat passengers. While it's a shock to no one, CR called out the limited space in the backseats as well as some finicky controls as this Bimmer's biggest shortcomings.
For over a year now, we've been hearing about a potential partnership between Toyota and BMW on everything from sports cars to lithium-ion batteries, but one of the first cooperative projects between these two automakers could bring Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell technology to a BMW vehicle. Reuters is reporting that an announcement is likely to be made as soon as later this week regarding a BMW fuel cell vehicle that could be in production by 2020 with a prototype running around by 2015. The last we heard of Toyota's fuel cell technology, it was in the FCV-R Concept that we saw at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, but there is no word how far along in development this system is. If it does come to fruition, such a vehicle for BMW would build on the automaker's commitment to hydrogen that started with the Hydrogen 7, which unlike a fuel cell vehicle, simply ran on hydrogen fuel rather than converting it to electricity for use in motors. We're definitely interested where this Toyota/BMW tie up could be headed.
