Reveal of next-gen BMW 7 Series set for June 10

Executive vice presidents of the world, your next sedan is debuting in just a few days. BMW is finally taking the wraps off the next-gen 7 Series on June 10, and the Bavarian brand's teaser video provides a few early hints about the high-class model. Highlighting a 750Li, the camera in the teaser swoops around the sedan to show off its laser headlights. The badge for BMW's Carbon Core also gets some of the limelight here to proclaim the extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. This clip doesn't give much more away, though. However, BMW has already spilled the beans about some of the other futuristic features for the new 7 Series in an earlier tease. The sedan is essentially a rolling technological showcase and offers functions like remote-controlled parking that's run from the key fob. Inside, using the infotainment system is possible with three-dimensional gesture control by waving your hand in the air in the right area. The extensive amount of CFRP in the passenger cell also helps save 287 pounds over the previous generation. If buyers are really looking for opulence, they can also reportedly order a massive, panoramic glass roof and a leather-covered engine cover. BMW builds its 2 millionth 1 Series on eve of new model's launch

Hard as it may be to believe, it's been over ten years since BMW launched the first 1 Series, taking the Bavarian automaker into more accessible territory for the first time. Later this month, the first examples of the new model will arrive at dealers, but before it does, the littlest BMW has another reason to celebrate as the 2 millionth unit has rolled off the line. The landmark example is a 120i five-door equipped with the M Sport package and painted in Estoril Blue, bound for a customer in Japan. The achievement is even more noteworthy when you consider that what started out as the 1 Series has since been split into two lines. The three- and five-door hatchbacks remain part of the 1 Series, while the coupe and convertible we get in the US that were once part of the 1 Series as well have since been spun off as the separate 2 Series. Production of the three-door takes place exclusively at BMW's plant in Regensburg, while the five-door is split between Regensburg and a second plant in Leipzig. BMW i1 EV rumored, based on electric Mini

With just two BMW i cars currently available — and aging — we've been hankering to know what new EVs are coming down the pipeline for the Bavarian automaker. We've had news of the iNext and i4, caught wind of an iX3, and as BMW is in the early stages of a large electrification push, there has been a multitude of "i"-prefaced trademarks registered. The next we can expect, if the rumors from Spanish outlet Motor.es are to be believed, will be a diminutive i1 EV, based on the same platform as an upcoming electric Mini Cooper. As such, it would share the electric Mini's front-drive/front-motor configuration — previewed on the Mini Electric Concept, shown above, that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. It stands to reason that the i1 would be smaller than the high-roofed i3, possibly borrowing the five-door hatchback format from the 1 Series sold in Europe (which would be a long-awaited dream come true if it made its way to the United States). The electric car would be about a foot shorter than the 1 series, though, according to the report, at about 158 inches long. It would be built on an electric version of BMW modular UKL platform. Keep in mind, the BMW i1 is just a rumor at this point, with Motor.es keeping its sources unnamed. If true, though, it could replace the i3 in BMW's lineup five years from now, in 2023.
