The 5.0-liter V-10 produces 500 horsepower and 383 pounds-feet of torque and teams with a seven-speed sequential manual transmission. The M6 accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

All 2006 M5s have a tire pressure monitoring system. The M5's navigation system gains real-time traffic information.

Exterior
BMW says the M5's suspension is "built exclusively for sporting performance. Changes to the basic 5 Series design include a modified front air dam with large secondary intake openings that provide additional engine-cooling air. Side sills are aerodynamically contoured. Forged aluminum 19-inch wheels were developed specifically for the M5, and an "M" logo is present in the ornamental side slats.

The roof is made of carbon fiber, and the car has a better power-to-weight ratio than the M6 coupe. A speed-sensing M Differential Lock promises optimum traction even in difficult conditions. Dynamic Stability Control incorporates two driving programs, including M Dynamic mode, which BMW says is "tailored to the sporting driver."

Interior
In addition to the performance potential of a V-10 engine, the M5 offers plenty of luxury amenities. M sport seats include power lumbar and backrest width adjustment. Three-stage heating includes the seat bottom, backrest and side supports. Twin contoured rear seats are separated by a cushion.

Merino leather upholstery covers the seats, console, handbrake lever, door panels, door handles and armrests. The car is accented with carbon fiber trim and titanium finish. MDrive lets the driver select preferred drivetrain and suspension settings at the touch of a button, and an M-specific head-up display is installed. This particular vehicle also has a built-in Passport radar detector.

Under the Hood
The M5 is powered by a 5.0-liter V-10 that develops 500 hp and 383 pounds-feet of torque. The engine can rev as high as 8,250 rpm. At start-up, the engine produces a "comfort-oriented" 400 hp, which is more suitable for urban traffic. A button on the selector-lever cover increases output to the M6's top rating. The V-10 drives a seven-speed sequential manual transmission. Drivelogic provides 11 gear-change options: six in sequential mode and five in automatic-shifting mode.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control, side-impact airbags for front-seat occupants, and side curtain airbags (in coupes) are standard.

A look back on BMW, South Carolina and Southern manufacturing

Sat, 29 Dec 2012

It has been 20 years since BMW broke ground on its Spartanburg, SC manufacturing facility, and while the automaker doesn't have any plans to mark the moment, economists and industry analysts have taken a closer look at the facility's impact on South Carolina, the South and global manufacturing. As of November, the Spartanburg plant's 7,000 employees cranked out 25,000 vehicles per month, and BMW has poured some $6 billion into the state since the plant opened in 1993. While that figure nearly matches the state's proposed budget for next year, some say there have been drawbacks.
To begin with, South Carolina provided BMW with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of public money and tax breaks with little public oversight, setting a precedent that would repeat itself with other corporations. The Detroit News reports that a Pew Center evaluation found 26 states didn't have a sufficient system for evaluating tax incentive performance. But BMW opened the door for a Southern manufacturing renaissance, with automakers from Mercedes-Benz to Hyundai and Volkswagen opening plants in the Deep South.
While states have raced to offer ever sweeter tax and cash incentives for big manufacturers, officials say BMW is proof the system can pay dividends. You can read the full piece here.

BMW i3 misses top Euro safety rating [w/videos]

Wed, 27 Nov 2013

The Euro NCAP just tested a recent batch of new cars including the 2014 BMW i3, and the EV Bimmer scored less-than-perfect results. Though not horrible, BMW's all-electric/range-extended i3 was given a four-star (out of five possible) crash rating due to concerns with front-occupant whiplash and side-impact protection.
Based on the crash results, the BMW provided suitable protection for occupants in the frontal, side barrier, pedestrian and child-seat tests, but the i3 was tripped up when it came to the more severe side pole test and the rear-impact test. The pole test showed protection to the chest of the test dummy was "weak," and the front seats only provided "marginal" protection against whiplash for front passengers. Scroll down to watch two videos released by the Euro NCAP of the i3 being tested.

BMW's Mini plant closes for 4 weeks for the Brexit that didn't happen

Mon, Apr 1 2019

LONDON — BMW's Mini plant in Britain is closing for four weeks starting Monday in a move planned over a half year ago to help the company deal with any disruption resulting from Brexit, which has since been delayed. The German carmaker, which builds just over 15 percent of Britain's 1.5 million cars, moved its annual summertime shutdown to April to "minimize the risk of any possible short-term parts-supply disruption in the event of a no-deal Brexit." But Britain's departure from the EU has now been pushed back from March 29 until at least April 12 or potentially much later, scuppering the timing of major contingency plans for some carmakers. Shutdowns are organized far in advance so employee holidays can be scheduled and suppliers can adjust volumes, making them hard to move. "This is what our company and our workforce have planned for over many months, and it is fixed into our business planning," said a BMW spokesman. It represents the latest headache for Britain's once roaring car sector which had been on track for record production but since 2017 has posted sharp falls in sales, output and investment. The overwhelmingly foreign-owned industry has become increasingly incredulous as a stable and attractive investment environment descends into one of its deepest political crises, risking the free and frictionless trade the sector relies on. BMW's Rolls-Royce factory in Goodwood will close for two weeks whilst Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) three car plants and engine facility and Honda's Swindon facility will also shut for a few days this month as part of Brexit contingencies. It has been a turbulent few months for the sector after Nissan canceled plans to build a new sport utility vehicle at its English Sunderland plant and Honda said it would shutter its plant in 2021 in the biggest blow to the sector for years. Toyota provided a rare boost when it announced plans to build cars for Suzuki at its English car plant. BMW, which is also closing its central English Hams Hall engine facility and Swindon press shop and sub-assembly site for four weeks, has said it could move some engine and Mini output out of Britain if there is not an orderly Brexit. Carmakers face a number of risks if there is a disorderly Brexit, including delays to the supply of ports and finished models, new customs bureaucracy, the need to recertify models and an up to 10 percent tariff on finished vehicles.
