BMW’s high-performance M3 convertible is available with a black soft-top and blue exterior and blue interior color. An inline-six-cylinder engine that produces 333 horsepower — that’s 108 hp more than the BMW 330 — powers the M3 models.
During 2002, a sequentially shifting manual transmission became available. The Formula One-style transmission offers hydraulic sequential shifting of the six-speed gearbox, which can operate automatically or be driver controlled via shift paddles. Other M3 extras include 18-inch Z-rated tires on alloy wheels, a sport suspension and aerodynamic body trim.
Exterior
The M editions have some unique differences, including a distinctive bumper and spoiler ensemble, a crosshatch center air intake and elliptical fog lights. A unique aluminum hood has subtle power dome accenting. The wheel openings are flared outward by an extra 20 millimeters to accommodate the wide tires. The front-fender gills display M3 emblems, and the mirrors have a distinct aero shape.
A subtle deck-lid spoiler sits above a special M bumper and apron design. The M3 has a wider front and rear track than its less-potent 3 Series mates and features unique suspension and underbody components. A rising belt line imparts a visually lower stance on the convertible. Options include 19-inch tires.
Interior
The convertible will seat four occupants. The convertible has power front seats. This M3 comes with a sport package/ A powered easy-entry feature makes it simpler to gain access to the backseat. Cargo capacity is 7.7 cubic feet for the convertible.
A heated glass rear window is standard in the convertible, which has a power-operated top. One push of a button initiates the entire top-down operation. As the fabric top unlatches at the windshield header and moves upward, a rigid magnesium cover opens and then closes over the folded material. Options include a navigation system, a removable aluminum hardtop and BMW’s Park Distance Control system.
Under the Hood
The M edition get a 333-hp, 3.2-liter inline-six-cylinder with stepless variable valve timing. This engine drives a Getrag Type D six-speed-manual transmission that can incorporate sequential shifting.
BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control system combines all-speed traction control and cornering-stability enhancement. The automaker claims the M3 convertible takes 5.4 seconds to go from 0-60.
Safety
Seat-integrated side-impact airbags and all-disc antilock brakes are standard. A Rollover Protection System in the convertible automatically deploys structural bars behind the rear seats if it detects an impending rollover. Daytime running lights are standard, and rear-seat side-impact airbags are optional.
Driving Impressions
Serious enthusiasts are likely to appreciate the M3’s sequential gearbox, which demands considerable attention to garner peak results. The sequentially shifting manual transmission’s operation can jolt occupants’ necks. Even in fully automatic mode, gear changes are far from gentle.

There's no substitution for BMW's E30 Mmmmm3
Mon, 17 Jun 2013If you told someone that you had a friend with a four-cylinder BMW who "would let me wash the car," and in exchange for the privilege then let you drive that clean BMW once around the block, your first question would probably be "What kind of BMW is this?" There's a chance you wouldn't be surprised once you found out the coupe in question was the E30 M3, a car our own Zach Bowman dubbed the "Mmmmm3."
Petrolicious talks to Gabor Mester about the car he fell in love with, a black version of the original "Munich mauler" that was owned by the parents of a high-school friend - oh, and Mester was also in high school when this washing and driving took place. When the original owners were ready to sell, Mestor was ready to buy, and he hasn't had a single regret about it since.
You can enjoy his story in his words in the video below.
BMW M4 Convertible spied with naked top and trunk
Mon, 10 Feb 2014Our trusty spy photographers have been at it again, snagging these first images of the forthcoming BMW M4 Convertible without camouflage on its retractable roof and rear deck. You'll recall that this is not the first time we've seen the followup to the M3 Convertible, but that the last batch of images we had were encumbered by a lot more camouflage - this car is virtually naked by comparison.
Not surprisingly, the M4 looks to share its folding hardtop design with the standard 4 Series droptop, and it should operate in a similar manner as well. It's no surprise, but it looks like BMW is going to try and make the transition from M4 Coupe to M4 Convertible as effortless as previous efforts converting the M3 to an M3 Convertible. That should mean that below the beltline, this car is nearly identical to the coupe we saw in Detroit.
As for the camo'd features on these spy photos, the hood, front fascia, rear fascia, quarter panels, side sills and mirrors have all been shown on the M4 Coupe, and don't really bear mentioning. There's been no word of just where the M4 Convertible will make its debut, although considering the lack of disguise on this car, Geneva seems like a likely destination.
BMW offering Track Handling Package for 2 Series
Thu, 17 Apr 2014After getting a chance to drive the BMW M235i earlier this year, we mentioned our regret at not being able to sample the lighter and less powerful 228i Coupe. We'd like to have seen how close the latter could get to the former, noting that "there's a lot of room for upgrades with the $11,000 retail difference." BMW is closing that performance gap slightly, announcing that a Track Handling Package will join the options sheet for the 2015 228i Coupe.
The group bolts on Variable Sport Steering, Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Brakes behind new 18-inch lightweight wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. There's no change to the 240-horsepower four-cylinder, but a coupe so equipped should be able to do plenty more with the horses it has thanks to a faster steering rack, sharper handling due to additional sensors and a ten-millimeter drop in ride height, and larger brakes and discs.
BMW has used the New York Auto Show as a venue to introduce the new Track Handling Package, and it will roll onto showroom floors in July and pricing will be announced sometime between now and then. Takers can get it with both the six-speed manual and eight-speed Sport Automatic, see it in the high-res image gallery above, and read about it in the press release below.
