Executive (water Buffalo Hide) Interior, Usaf 4-star Provenance, New Ac System on 2040-cars
Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States
Thinning out my collection, so I’m offering at a very good price this grey-market, federalized Bimmer coupe which was purchased in Germany in 1985 by a US Air Force General and imported into the US that same year. Here’s the story: Brigadier (later 4-star) General Charles Boyd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_G._Boyd), a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient and the only ex-Vietnam POW at attain the highest military rank, purchased this car new while stationed at Ramstein Air Base. The import plate on the door jamb actually has his name inscribed as the importer, as opposed to a more typical “BMW of North America” or something of the sort. The low mileage indicates he used this as a second or weekend car. I purchased it with 55K miles in early 2010. The car has all the features you’d expect of a Euro model, to include the more attractive small chrome bumpers and Euro-spec engine. The speedometer/odometer was switched out when it was brought to the United States (in the same year as purchased, so it’s most likely very accurate), but all other instrumentation is in the original German. The medium brown interior is of an exotic water buffalo hide, known as the “executive” option. The leather is thick and durable (no scratches or tears), and has attained a fine patina over the years. The paint looks remarkable in many aspects, but does have some flaws. Most significant is a softball-sized blemish on the hood where, during shipment, brake fluid must have dripped from the vehicle above; the spot’s been repainted and buffed out but is still quite noticeable. If I were to keep this car I’d eventually do another respray to cover this and some other minor discoloration, but I’m willing now to let it go at a price that takes this aspect of the car into consideration. There is no rust damage on the car, but given this model’s notoriety I suspect that some may have been repaired previously, prior to the repaint. Nevertheless, the car is clean on top and underneath. Pictures tell the story better than words in this case. Not much more to say, as this car spent more time in storage than on the road in the four years I’ve owned it (I’ve got several vintage autos, and I wanted to preserve the low mileage on this one). I did have a new AC compressor and drier installed in 2010, as it did not work when I purchased the car. Fluids and a tune-up done, but again it was not driven much. The battery discharged while over the winter, so I put in a new one this Spring. I also just installed new brake pads. It runs perfectly and drives smoothly … one of the most stable cars I’ve ever driven, especially around corners. There’s not much lean involved at all. Happy to answer any questions. Will work with you to ease concerns about shipping, etc. Will require $500 deposit via Paypal within 48 hours of auction close, with balance wire-transferred to my bank prior to shipment or pickup. Will consider bringing the car to you, depending on your location and my availability/timing. |

2015 BMW i8 sets everyone's tongues wagging in Northern Michigan
Fri, 31 Oct 2014Like few other cars we can remember, people want to talk about the 2015 BMW i8. Drive one, and you'll soon find out what we mean. They stop you at gas stations. They accost you in Walgreen's parking lots. They stream out of neighborhood bars, beers in hand.
At least, that was our experience this week during Autoblog's Technology of the Year testing. We had the pleasure of driving the plug-in hybrid BMW sports car up to and around Petoskey, MI, a resort town where seeing such exotics is rare enough, let alone in the off season. It made for some interesting conversations - so we began writing down some of the comments the butterfly-doored coupe inspired. Here's a sampling:
"Wanna race for pinks? I'll go easy on you." - Acne-covered teenage pizza delivery driver in a sad-looking Ford Taurus parked at a Valero gas station near Grayling (which incidentally didn't actually have gas).
BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe blows the doors back on [w/video]
Tue, 04 Mar 2014BMW sure seems to take pleasure in confusing the hell out of us. It used to be pretty simple: if you wanted a compact Bimmer, you had to look no further than the 3 Series. Then it was just a matter of which bodystyle you wanted. But the smaller end of BMW's lineup has gotten more complicated lately. Never mind the 1 Series and 2 Series (in their various iterations) that have slotted in below it - now the 3 Series has been split in two: Want a four-door, get the new 3 Series. Want a two-door, the 4 Series is your address. Right?
Almost. Because now there's a 4 Series Gran Coupe that keeps the two-door's roofline (or some approximation of it) but adds an extra set of doors in the back, thereby bridging the gap between the 3 Series sedan and 4 Series coupe. And it's just made its public debut here at the Geneva Motor Show.
The difference between this and the two-door 4 Series is plain to see: it's got two extra doors. But what's the difference between this and the 3 Series sedan? About two or three grand, to start with - depending on which version (428i Gran Coupe or 435i Gran Coupe) you choose. But it's also sleeker, more muscular and altogether that extra bit sexier. Which is a good trait, as you can see from our gallery of live shots above, to have in your European sports sedan, coupe, or whatever you want to call it.
Playboy reveals its 2013 Cars of the Year
Thu, 20 Dec 2012Vaunted men's magazine Playboy knows that its readers are nearly as interested in cars as they are in the female anatomy... sorry, we thought we could write that with a straight face. Anyway, the buff-book does occasionally fill some of its spreads with sexy metal, to accent all the rest of the sexiness.
To wit, the magazine has unveiled its feature on the 2013 Cars of the Year. Without giving us much in the way of criteria for the awards, nor a clear framing of the categories ("Responsible Ride" is a particularly challenging concept, especially when you consider that the Mazdaspeed3 was the winner), Playboy has nevertheless highlighted what we assume to be it's favorite 12 or 13 (depending on how you count) cars from the 2013 model year.
Headlining the class is the Porsche 911, which Playboy writers single out for having "remarkable electronic voodoo." BMW M5 is named "Slickest Sports Sedan" though the Cadillac ATS then follows on because "we couldn't resist giving the new Caddy a shout-out." The rest of the picks are pretty conventional (save, perhaps, the Honda Fit EV as "Ace Electric"), even if the categories and methodology are fairly wonky. Cruise through or gallery for a taste or check out the full list, here. The site is safe for work, and you can legitimately (this time) say that you were reading it for the articles.
