I'm selling my US-spec 1984 BMW 633csi to focus on other projects. The "shark nose" E24 was built atop the 5-series E28 chassis, and was a flagship car when new. It features power door locks, power windows, power seats, power sunroof, a fuel injected 3.2L inline 6 engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, 3.25 limited-slip differential, front and rear disc brakes, cruise control, a trip computer that provides various driver information, and a check control function to warn the driver when there is a problem or low fuel level.

The car is Arktisblau Metallic exterior (code 045), with Pearl Beige leather interior featuring power comfort seats (code 0158). All interior functions work, including all power seat functions. It was manufactured in September 1983.

I'm the third owner, and the car has been well-maintained. I used it as a daily driver for a while, until my twins grew enough to make it a nightmare to fit. I've also used it on several road trips to Vegas and San Diego. It has never stranded me, nor had any major issues. I have receipts (in both paper and PDF format) to back up all the work that I've done to the car as well as much of what was done prior to my ownership. Upon purchase (at 150,000 miles), I replaced all the fluids, including the transmission and differential (both with RedLine synthetic), and reset the valve lash and replaced the spark plugs with Bosch. The car has nearly been completely gone-through. Some highlights:

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain
-Valve lash checked at 150k, camshaft oil spray bar banjo bolts inspected OK
-Spark plugs replaced with Bosch at 150k
-Previous owner claims to have had AC compressor replaced (no receipt, unit appears to be aftermarket)
-Transmission mounts, shifter linkage bushings and mounts replaced at 160k
-Shifter handle replaced, including "M" shift emblem (not shown in photos)
-Driveshaft center support bearing assembly replaced at 160k, guibo inspected OK
-Alternator bushings replaced at 158k
-In-tank fuel pump replaced prior to my ownership (have receipt)
-Engine compartment fuel hoses replaced by previous owner (have receipt)
-Fuel pressure regulator replaced prior to my ownership (have receipt)

Steering/Suspension (rebuilt at 160k)
-Front: control arms, center link, idler arm, tie rod assemblies, sway bar links replaced, Bilstein sport struts inserts with new spring pads, UUC camber plates; caster set approximately +.5° greater than OEM, camber set at -1°, toe per OEM specs
-Rear: Bilstein sport shocks with new spring pads and sway bar links; previous owner had driver's side trailing arm and links for both sides replaced
-Steering subframe mount inspected OK (cracking is a common problem)
-Power steering filter and suction hose replaced by prior owner (have receipt)

Wheels
-16" BMW style 5 wheels with brand new 225/50-16 tires, including full-size spare with style 5 wheel
-Center caps not shown in several photos, they are installed and included

Brakes (full brake upgrade at 160k)
-Front: E32 750iL calipers (same as common E34 540i; 60mm bore), E34 540i rotors (Raybestos Advanced Tech), Raybestos Quiet Stop ceramic pads, stainless steel lines
-Rear: E32 750iL calipers (38mm bore), E34 540i rotors (Professional Grade), Raybestos Quiet Stop ceramic pads, stainless steel lines
-Master cylinder reservoir grommets replaced, DOT4 brake fluid used

Clutch
-Master and slave cylinders replaced at approximately 155k, stainless steel line installed

Interior/Misc
-I replaced the odometer gears shortly after purchase. The mileage is accurate
-The dash has a cover, as it is cracked
-I replaced the SI board batteries; the service indicator and change oil lights work as intended (constant illumination is a common problem)
-AC and heater fan operate at all speeds
-The AC works perfectly!
-Front and rear power windows operate flawlessly
-On-board computer works flawlessly
-Semi-custom cup holders installed
-Front speakers replaced with Pioneer
-The cruise control ON switch latches, requiring you to pull back on the stalk to prevent the car from untended acceleration when turning it on
-Previous owner had both front seat inner and outer drives replaced, plus passenger-side fore/aft drive (have receipt). All seat functions work flawlessly, including the problematic headrests
-The trunk-mounted tool box is complete with all tools
-The in-trunk jack and tire iron are included
-Aftermarket keyless entry

This car has 160,000 miles on the clock. It has been maintained fantastically, but it is showing some signs of age. The interior features some cracking (especially to the dash, a common problem), but mechanically it is nearly flawless. All electrical components work, and it has been as reliable as anything I've driven.

Ken Block and friends race light in silly-beautiful Castrol commercial

Wed, 28 May 2014

How does one make fast, loud, drifting cars better? Well, you can add more fast, loud, drifting cars or you can add lasers. Either or, really. In this case, Castrol did the right thing and added both, creating a highly stylized commercial for its Edge Titanium motor oil starring South African racer Adrian Zaugg, BMW factory driver Augusto Farfus, Audi DTM and Le Mans staple Mike Rockenfeller and some bloke named Ken Block.
Their cars? No surprise, but Block is in his Ford Fiesta GRC, while Zaugg samples a Lamborghini Aventador and Farfus and Rockenfeller drive along party lines, with a BMW M4 and an Audi R8, respectively. And those cars look good, too, thanks to the creative light and laser work on display.
Take a look below for the video from Castrol.

BMW's Best 1 Series Gives Back What You Put In
Every once in a while, I find myself, despite my solitary leanings and inherent modesty, working out in some kind of class setting. The tone and tenor of these classes ranges wildly - from the quiet, follow-the-leader variety, to those with a kind of Cult of Personality man or woman calling the shots, usually with idiom-laden shouting and theatrical hair. Despite their personal variation and range of professional effectiveness, there's one common concept that most instructors bring up at some point: working with intention.
The idea, as it relates to physical fitness, is that focusing your brain on the movement at hand - the rate of your own breathing, or the muscle groups being worked for instance - helps to perform the act efficiently and correctly. Having spent a happy majority of the last decade in an exercise-free near-debauch, I was a bit surprised to find out that this kind of mental game really works pretty well.
