there were only one BMW model epitomizing the perfect blend of
luxury, sportiness and serious driving pleasure, for many enthusiasts it
is the E24 6 Series. It had 12 years of production glory, from 1977 to
1989 (U.S.), and its design was imitated by many others but never
equaled--not even by BMW. Diehard 6er owners often refuse to buy newer
models, instead pouring thousands into mechanical and cosmetic work to
keep the big coupes cruising. The significant revisions BMW brought to the E24 for the 1980 model were all overshadowed by the wonders of Robert Bosch innovations. Using Bosch's ingenious new invention, the oxygen sensor, allowed efficient use of a three-way catalytic converter. The positively horrible and universally hated thermal reactor and EGR emissions control systems were dispensed with at once in favor of this new technology. A new factory electronic ignition system also appeared. The darkest chapter in U.S.-spec BMW engine history was finally at an end. While actual power output remained the same, driveability was immeasurably improved. More importantly, but unbeknownst to us at the time, electronic engine management systems would eventually allow U.S-spec BMW engines to achieve nearly the same power output as rest-of-the-world variants. It would take nearly 10 years, but the course was set in 1980. In 1983-84, Bosch Motronic engine management quietly entered our lives with Motronic version 1.0 basic. Ignition timing and fuel mixture were now computer-controlled. This early Motronic system, wonderful as it was at the time, is less than desirable today from a performance-tuning standpoint. No chips are available to upgrade the ECU--what you have is what you have. Even though the engines will still respond well to high-compression pistons and camshaft upgrades, electronic optimization is not possible. Similarly, while the catalytic converter is far preferable to the dreaded thermal reactor (writer looks down, spits), the exhaust system on these pre-1985 Motronic cars is incredibly restrictive forward of the cat. The end result was lots of header installations and de-catting prior to that becoming bad juju, and later, installation of 3.5-liter engines with advanced Motronics. A five-speed manual gearbox backed up the newly invigorated engine, but, contrary to popular close-ratio European fashion, fifth gear was overdriven to reduce engine speeds at cruising velocities. This allowed both increased fuel economy and use of lower (numerically higher) differential ratios to aid acceleration. Traditionally, BMW gears down cars when it wants to spiff up low-end zoot either as a result of engine size, automatic transmission or, in this case, emission controls. The automatic transmission option included cruise control starting in 1982. |

Toyota Supra, Rolls-Royces, dozens of BMWs recalled for backup camera issue
Wed, Oct 9 2019Weeks after Nissan and Infiniti recalled more than 1.2 million vehicles for a potentially dangerous programming oversight in the backup camera settings, BMW has issued a recall for similar problems. The recall, which covers 257,481 vehicles, includes numerous BMWs, as well as two Rolls-Royce models, and the 2020 Toyota Supra. In total, the recall potentially affects 51 different products. This includes the 2018 BMW 540D, 2018–2019 BMW 640I, Rolls-Royce Phantom, 2018–2020 BMW 530e, 530i, 540i, M5, M550i, X3, 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, 2019–2020 BMW 330I, 740Le, 740Li, 745Le, 750Li, 840i, M340i, M850i, X4, X5, X6, X7, Z4, and 2020 Toyota Supra. On certain BMW models, xDrive variants are also included. According to NHTSA campaign No. 19V684000, "The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rearview image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse." If there is no display image when backing up, drivers can't properly see, and the car no longer meets modern safety regulations. Specifically, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors." The recall was filed on September 27, 2019, and BMW plans to begin notifying affected owners in November. BMW, Toyota, and Rolls-Royce dealers will update the vehicles' software, which should fix the problem.Â
2019 Volvo V60 vs. wagon competitors: How they compare on paper
Thu, Feb 22 2018The next-gen Volvo V60 was finally revealed this week. The outgoing model has been on sale since 2011, getting a few minor updates along the way. The new model is based off Volvo's Scalable Platform Architecture that underpins other models like the XC90 and XC60 crossovers and V90 wagon. The V60 will launch with two engines, with a powerful hybrid coming sometime down the line. Since the last V60 hit the market, Audi, Buick and BMW have all released their own flavor of wagon. Like Volvo, BMW sells a traditional sedan-based model. Audi and Buick's wagons are both high-riding models with some very slight off-road pretense, much like Volvo's Cross Country models. We don't have details on the upcoming V60 Cross Country, but, even when accounting for ground clearance, the V60, BMW 3 Series Sport Wagon, A4 Allroad and Buick Regal TourX have a lot of overlap. Check out the specs breakdown below. Discover and compare other wagons and crossovers with our Car Finder and Compare tools. Engines, transmissions and drivetrains Out of the four wagons, the new V60 is the only one that offers two-wheel drive and a hybrid variant. The base V60 T5 uses a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four and sends power to the front wheels. Stepping up to the V60 T6 nets buyers an additional 66 horsepower thanks to a twincharged — supercharged and turbocharged — 2.0-liter and all-wheel drive. A T8 model that uses a 390-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain will be available soon. All V60s use an eight-speed automatic. The Audi, BMW and Buick are all powered by 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-fours. Additionally, the 3 Series has a 2.0-liter turbo diesel. All three wagons have standard all-wheel drive. The BMW and Buick use an eight-speed automatic, while the Audi sends power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As base engines go, there's a four-horsepower difference between the most and least powerful models, though the Buick wins out on torque. The V60 T6 matches the Regal TourX's torque figure and trounces every competitor's horsepower rating. The V60 T8 packs more power and torque than any of the competition. Cargo and interior space The outgoing V60 was on the small side for a wagon. This new model rectifies that a bit, though its 48.2 cubic-feet of cargo space with the second-row folded is still substantially smaller than the competition.
Formula E gets wireless-charging BMW i8 safety car [w/video]
Tue, 26 Aug 2014Racing series typically select a safety car appropriate to the kinds of racecars for which they'll be setting the pace. So you might find a Mercedes SLS pacing a Formula One grand prix, for example, and you're more likely to find a BMW M4 on duty at a DTM race and a Chevy Camaro or SS on an oval speedway for a NASCAR or Indy race. It would only stand to reason, then, that the FIA Formula E Championship kicking off next month in Beijing would press a plug-in into service as its safety car. But the organizers didn't go for your run-of-the-mill Nissan Leaf or Toyota Prius.
No, the safety car for Formula E will be a BMW i8 specially modified for the occasion. As you can see from the video below, the hybrid sports car packs a full roll cage, racing buckets with harnesses, special communications systems and on-board fire extinguishers. But that's not all.
In partnership with technological partner Qualcomm, the Formula E support fleet - including two examples each of the i8 and i3 - will feature inductive charging. So while one is out on the track, or at least sitting at the end of the pit lane waiting to be deployed - the other will be charging wirelessly. The vehicles are still pending FIA approval, and only one has been outfitted with the Qualcomm Halo wireless charging system (with the others to be retrofitted later), but they were all on hand for the recent practice race at Donnington Park.
