This is a 2000 BMW 540i.  It has an automatic transmission and a 4.4 liter V8 engine.  It is in great shape, with a few small chips on the hood, which is standard for a car that has been driven this much.  It has over 200,000 miles, right around 210,000.  The exact mileage is unknown because the instrument cluster was recently replaced with one that had been refurbished because the pixels went bad.  This is extremely common for these cars, and it had been taken off the list of common potential maintenance.  Another common problem with these cars is the degradation of the timing chain guides.  This has also been dealt with within the past 15,000 miles.  The timing chain was replaced along with its guide rails, and the top end of the engine was rebuilt.  This is a $5,000 job that will not need to be done for another 200,000 miles.  Another recent fix was the ABS computer, around the same time as the engine repairs.  As a result of this upkeep, the engine runs as strong as it ever did, idles smooth and low, and cranks out the horsepower.  The only problem left is the transmission.  The automatic transmission occasionally has problems deciding when to shift, and will rev higher than it should before changing gears.  Despite this infrequent hiccup, it is still a reliable daily driver.  It was daily driven by my father until a job shift required him to get a truck.  After that, I have been daily driving it for the past 8 or 9 months while working on my own car.  It never left either one of us stranded anywhere, and was a minor in convince at most.  Besides this, very little TLC would bring this car back to like new condition. Interior is in great shape.  The leather seats are heated and all their motors work beautifully.  If the flimsy cup holders were replaced, no one would know this car was 13 years old!

2016 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance: It's all in the details

Mon, Aug 22 2016

It's no secret that Pebble Beach is an ode to gorgeous, and mostly, classic cars. The car show may be a place for automakers to showcase extremely expensive cars to wealthy buyers, but it's also one of the go-to places for enthusiasts that love automobiles and culture. While it's easy to be overwhelmed by the overall beauty of a car, the real magic often needs closer inspection to be realized. Every car at Pebble Beach is a work of art, but the true beauty of the vehicles lies in the details. And Autoblog's photographer, Drew Phillips, managed to capture the details on some gorgeous cars. From the Lamborghini Miura's exquisite steering wheel to Rolls-Royce's Spirit of Ecstasy, it's all at Pebble Beach. We think the details on some of the cars are prettier than the cars themselves, but don't take our word for it. Check out the beautiful gallery above and enjoy the tiny bits and pieces behind some of the prettiest cars in the world. TRANSLOGIC 147: CES 2014 Autonomous Vehicles

Wed, Jan 15 2014

We head back to CES in Las Vegas to check on the progress of autonomous vehicles in 2014. We go hands-free on the highway with Audi, narrowly avoid a collision with Ford and hear all about BMW's drifting driverless car. But first we take a ride on Induct's self-driving Navia shuttle.

Watch man destroy his M6 'lemon' with a sledgehammer and ax

Tue, 17 Sep 2013

Just to be clear, the owner of this BMW M6 isn't ready for another one. He and his friend destroyed the V10-powered coupe in anger at the entrance to the Frankfurt Motor Show in a decidedly public fashion. Bild and GT Spirit report that the owner was angry over mysterious quality and reliability issues that he claims BMW wasn't able to fix. What we have here, folks, is claimed to be a very expensive lemon.
As the story goes, owner Pourmohseni Hadi bought the 2007 M6 in 2008, and five years later, he is still complaining about mysterious vibrations, rattles and severe jolts during gear changes - the latter he says have caused passengers to become nauseous. The car was taken to several BMW repair shops in Italy and Hadi says he he has written a letter to the automaker about his issues, but the car was never fixed and the letter unanswered, he claims. What we don't know is how many miles the car has been driven and when all these problems started happening. The situation reminds us of a certain Lamborghini Gallardo from a couple years back.
While we understand Hadi's frustration, perhaps an M6 just doesn't suit his tastes. After all, we'd be lying if we said a perfectly functioning M6 of this generation wasn't bumpy over uneven surfaces and wouldn't make some passengers nauseous, with its stiffly sprung suspension and dizzying 500-horsepower V10. Anyone wanna bet his M6 was equipped with one of BMW's notoriously abrupt SMG single-clutch gearboxes?
