1999 BMW 540it w/6 speed swap (does carry a salvage title due to previous front end damage - see attached picture and link to more below)

I am selling my rare 1999 BMW 540it wagon that has had the 6 speed manual swap completed by a previous owner. The car was previously involved in an accident that caused it to be totaled out by insurance, so it does carry a rebuilt title. The wreck was in 2009 and the car has had nearly 60k miles put on it since then, so any issues from the wreck have already been sorted out.  The car is a southern car (FL, TX, NC and SC) so there is absolutely no rust on it.  I have a copy of an Autocheck that was recently ran that I can send to show ownership history (interesting part is it doesn't show the accident/wreck, just the title switching to rebuilt so I assume it was a single vehicle accident and never had a police report).  Please read the list below to understand everything that I have done to the car plus the little things that I know it still needs. Feel free to e-mail with any questions. This is a gorgeous car that needs a good home. I am just ready for a truck/SUV and can't keep this also.  I would entertain trades for Expeditions, Sequoias, Armadas, Tundras, F150s with similar mileage and pricing.

Maintenance done by me shortly after purchase in October 2013:

·       Replaced water pump myself with remanufactured unit from O’reilly’s (see receipt)

·       Replaced driver’s side front inner door handle as old one broke in cold of winter

·       Replaced windshield washer pump (OEM BMW part) as old one was not functioning

·       Purchased brand new key from BMW in order to have two keys for car

·       Purchased/installed OEM all-weather floor mats

·       Had front window tint removed and replaced to better match rear window tint

o   Car was originally in Texas and had tint that was illegal in NC, where previous owner was, so he removed the front tint only and had it replaced with 35% (NC legal)

o   I was in SC and did not have inspections and wanted the front to match the back again, so I had it put back to match (as best as possible) the tint on the back of the car (tint is approximately 20% on all windows)

·       Installed Curtis trailer hitch for use with bike rack

·       Wired fog lights to fog light switch

o   PO never had them wired when the M5 bumper was installed; instead he had the halos wired to the fog light switch.

o   Currently the halos and fog lights are turned on/off via the fog light switch, I tried wiring the halos to the parking lights, but then they actually flashed with the turn signals as that bulb is dual filament.

·       Replaced the front passenger window regulator with unit provided by PO that he simply never got installed.

·       Replaced rear hatch Roundel and all 4 wheel center cap roundels with OEM BMW replacement parts

·       Plasti-dipped front kidneys and rear 540i badge

·       Sent gage cluster to VDO repair for pixel fix

o   PO already had the MID repaired, so no pixel issues at all!!!

·       Purchased/installed new CD magazine for CD changer

·       Purchased/installed new battery from Advance Auto

·       Installed new timing chain tensioner (BMW OE part used)

Maintenance done by Austrotech in Taylors, SC (see receipt):

·       Valve cover gaskets

·       Front timing cover gaskets

·       Spark Plugs

·       Power steering hoses

·       Radiator

·       Miscellaneous o-rings found during other repairs that needed replacing

·       General inspection to give car clean bill of health for daily use

Items still needing attention/repair:

·       Front bumper alignment is slightly off where it meets the front fenders.  I never looked into adjusting, but assume it could be adjusted for better fit if you wanted to.

·       Front driver’s side fog light housing within bumper is cracked, so fog light pushed back if pressed on too hard (caution when hand washing J)

·       Front driver’s side fog light will take on some moisture after wash or heavy rain

·       Rocks have hit the black mesh lower grill in from bumper, so some of the black mesh is missing

·       Rims could use a refresh (black paint is flaking in lug holes, slight curb rash on two wheels)

·       Small scratches on driver’s door near window (looks to me like someone may have had a small dog that routinely hung out the window and the claws scratched the pain L)

·       Small indication that someone sideswiped me in a parking lot soon after I bought the car and dented the driver’s and passenger’s doors on the driver’s side just below the black side molding

o   I was able to pop the dent and buff the scratches, but if you look closely now you can see a small indication of a crease just below the side molding.

o   Most people would never notice, but want to make sure you know so if/when you notice you don’t think I was trying to hide it from you

·       Interior trim around rear window have broken tabs and are held on with double sided tape

·       Interior trim at top of rear window has broken tabs and double sided tape would not hold with the heat from the sun, so I used silicone sealant (J it’s what I had available at the time)

·       Tool kit is missing most pieces (all pieces necessary to jack the car up in an emergency are present, but not the individual tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc).

·       Headliner is sagging in a few places

·       Passenger side rear window needs a new window regulator soon

o   I have stopped rolling it down out of fear that it would get stuck in the down position

·       Woodgrain on cover to tape player is cracked

·       Driver’s seat shows wear, but no rips or tears

·       Driver’s side rear airbag leaked down in the dead of winter, but holds air fine when driving and does not leak down at all with warmer temperatures outside

·       Rear subframe bushings leaked some fluid in the dead of winter (no affect to driveability)

·       Neither myself or PO had any front suspension parts replaced, but there is no sign of them going bad either (car is extremely tight on the open road)

·       Transmission and differential fluids may need to be changed soon depending on what intervals you want to do them at

o   Documentation from PO shows they were last done around 75k miles

Xcar rates AWD vs. FWD vs. RWD

Tue, Feb 24 2015

With snow and ice blanketing large swathes of the United States over the past few weeks, commuting hasn't been easy. Among some drivers, there's an ongoing debate about how much all-wheel drive really helps when it gets slippery and whether rear-drive is as bad in slick conditions as many people think. Xcar Films puts some of those beliefs to the test in its latest video by showing off three very different cars taking on a trio of low-grip challenges. Xcar's picks for the test include the fairly plebeian, all-wheel drive Subaru Impreza, the somewhat plush, rear-drive BMW 120d and the sporty, front-drive Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy. Things start out easy with a hydraulic plate forcing the back end out on a wet skid pad. From there, the tests get really interesting with a slalom on simulated ice, and the cars finish with a high-speed cornering challenge through a soaked turn. While an obvious winner emerges in the end, keep in mind this is hardly a scientific test of grip. For better accuracy, all three vehicles should be wearing identical tires, and the same driver should be behind the wheel of each one. Still, Xcar's examination is a fun chance to see how vehicles react when things get slick. BMW confirms new Mexican plant

Thu, 03 Jul 2014

After over a year of speculation, BMW is finally officially announcing that it's building a factory in Mexico. The new plant will cost the German automaker roughly $1 billion US and will have a capacity of about 150,000 vehicles a year when complete. However, production won't begin there until 2019.
The new factory is being built near the city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with plans to employ about 1,500 people. Unfortunately, BMW is still mum about which models it's producing south of the border. Earlier rumors indicated the possibility of the 3 Series, 1 Series and maybe even Mini models there.
BMW says Mexico's multiple free trade agreements are a major factor in the choice of location of the plant. They make it possible for the automaker to ship models more cheaply to North America, parts of South America and the European Union. "The Americas are among the most important growth markets for the BMW Group. We are continuing our strategy of 'production follows the market,'" said Harald Krueger, the board's head of production, in the company's official announcement.

Defying Trump, major automakers finalize California emissions deal

Tue, Aug 18 2020

WASHINGTON — The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and major automakers on Monday confirmed they had finalized binding agreements to cut vehicle emissions in the state, defying the Trump administration's push for weaker curbs on tailpipe pollution. The agreements with carmakers Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co and BMW AG were first announced in July 2019 as voluntary measures prompting anger from U.S. President Donald Trump. A month later, the Justice Department opened an antitrust probe into the agreements. The government ended the investigation without action. The Trump administration in March finalized a rollback of U.S. vehicle emissions standards to require 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026. That is far weaker than the 5% annual increases in the discarded rules adopted under President Barack Obama. The 50-page California agreements, which extend through 2026, are less onerous than the standards finalized by the Obama administration but tougher than the Trump administration standards. The automakers have also agreed to electric vehicle commitments. Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Holdings, said in March it planned to join the automakers agreeing to the California requirements. It has also finalized its agreement. The settlement agreements say California and automakers agreed to resolve "potential legal disputes concerning the authority of CARB" and other states that have adopted California's standards. In May, a group of 23 U.S. states led by California and some major cities, challenged the Trump vehicle emissions rule. Other major automakers like General Motors Co, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Toyota Motor Corp did not join the California agreement. Those companies also sided with the Trump administration in a separate lawsuit over whether the federal government can strip California of the right to set zero emission vehicle requirements. Ford said the "final agreement will reduce emissions in our vehicles at a more stringent rate, support and incentivize the production of electrified products, and create regulatory certainty." BMW said "by setting these long-term, predictable, and achievable standards, we have the regulatory certainty that is necessary for long-term planning that will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but ultimately benefit consumers as well."Â
