I am the third owner of this vehicle. Very-well maintained. Dinan S3 serial number, Dinan supercharger installation, Dinan trans. programming and Dinan rear diff. Dinan intake, K & N filter (plus a spare), Dinan exhaust. Dinan strut bar. Dinan suspension. Dinan anti-roll bars. Huge Stop-Tech cross-drilled front brakes. No accidents ever, as far as I know. Lifetime non-smoker (car and occupants!). Very clean. M5 front bumper cover. Lowered, upgraded very firm (but not particularly harsh) This car is well-sorted, reliable, and very powerful. Everything is working, including the a/c, which is very important lately! Recent (over the past 5000 miles or so) work includes four new tires (265/235-19), new front brake pads, new power steering hoses, new engine mounts, belts, coolant level sensor, intake gaskets, valve-cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, battery, Mobil 1 (15W-50) oil change plus filter (performed earlier this month), spark plugs, one coil, and a secondary throttle solenoid and cable (DSC parts). No VANOS worries with this car, as it is pre-VANOS (and therefore makes more torque than the supercharged VANOS 4.4 engine does, iirc).
This car is an absolute blast to drive, and generates lots of 'nice car!' comments. It can be a sleeper if you drive gently, and is much like a stock pre-VANOS 540i in terms of acceleration up to about 3000 rpm, then pulls very, very hard after that. No top-speed limiter, I think. I'm not brave enough to find out, nor is it safe enough to try that on public roads, in my opinion. This car might do an honest 175, I don't know. I have not tracked it, but it would be awesome at a Driver's School, I suspect. Dinan does very thorough engineering work, and uses high-quality parts and labor, and this car shows it. The transmission shifts very crisply, especially in Sport mode, and shows no sign of weakness, as far as I can tell. It is pre-wired for and has the remote head unit for a Valentine 1. It has Sirius satellite radio (though I have never activated that feature - I like the sounds of the engine better, or a CD in the excellent Premium Sound system). It has HID headlamps and LED taillights. It has an alarm, although I pulled the fuse on it because it squawked every time you locked/unlocked the doors, and that annoyed me. I'm not a fan of alarms.
I am only selling this because I am purchasing a V-10 M5. Hate to see it go, but I just can't justify or store so many cars (even though I have tried...). I typically get 15 mpg city, running mostly in S4 mode. Highway might be 23-ish, I don't know, that's what my e39 M5 gets, and this should be similar or better, I'm guessing. The modifications were mostly done at about 40,000 miles, I believe. I do not have any paperwork from the first owner, however, and he had pretty much all of the work done, I think. The first person to see and drive this car will most likely purchase it, I'm guessing. Lots of grins per mile!

BMW M3 and M4 CSL not in the cards
Mon, 27 Jan 2014We aren't sure whether to file this one under "good news" or "bad news." BMW confirmed to Top Gear that there "are no plans" for lightweight versions of the new M3 and M4, in the same vein as the E46 M3 CSL (despite rumors to the contrary). The reason?
"There wasn't a CSL on the previous generation, and the way we look at it is like this: the CSL was great because it had this real focus on lightweight engineering. But we've already done that with these new cars. We've made them as light as possible - they come in under 1500 kilograms (3,306 pounds), which for a car like this is incredible," said Matt Collins, BMW's product manager for small to medium cars.
Now, as much as we love the idea of a hardcore version of any car, we appreciate BMW's point of view that the newest Ms are already as light and tough as they need to be. Collins elaborated, saying, "Rather than doing a halfway house to begin with and then rolling out a CSL, we thought we'd make the 'real' car as light as we possibly could. So we've no plans whatsoever to make a lighter, harder version just yet."
Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i3 goes against Mercedes B-Class ED, Tesla good for business
Wed, Sep 17 2014Car and Driver has published a comparison test pitting the 2014 BMW i3 against the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. The test not only measured the quality of the driving experience, but also all the quantitative details that are especially important when looking at electric vehicles. For instance, the Benz's real-world MPGe surpassed its own rating, but it still couldn't match the BMW. The B-Class, though, won in the range department. We won't spoil all the results, or Car and Driver's overall pick, but you can head over to the article to find out for yourself. Tesla's expanding business, including the Gigafactory being built in Reno, NV, is encouraging growth in the locales and associated businesses. Some of Tesla's suppliers are talking of relocation, wanting to be close to the action stirred up by the electric automaker's expansion. It makes good business sense to be in the same neighborhood as Tesla. "We can react quickly, and our engineers are constantly working with Tesla," says Futuris General Manager Sam Coughlin. Brookings Institute fellow Jennifer Vey says, "The land around Tesla is being redeveloped and reimagined. It's a mash-up of an anchor campus, startups, housing and transit, in a physically compact area where companies can cluster and connect." Read more at San Jose Mercury News. EVs are doing even more to reduce energy use clean up the air, according to new analysis from the Union of Concerned Scientists. According to findings, 60 percent of Americans now live in areas where EVs do more to reduce emissions than hybrids, up from 45 percent in 2012. Average electricity use is now 0.325 kWh per mile, down five percent from 2011. EV performance - in terms of mileage and emissions - is improving compared to traditional fuel vehicles, based on the sources of electricity in various regions. Zipcar is expanding across Europe, and has already established itself in Austria, Spain and the UK. According to Zipcar France's General Manager Etienne Hermite, "In a highly populated city, Zipcar's model has been proven to remove up to 15 personally owned vehicles from the road for each Zipcar in service, reducing parking demand, congestion and emissions." Zipcar European President Massimo Marsili hopes that most Parisians will eventually be just a short walk from a Zipcar.
Company car offers in decline, but not at The Cheesecake Factory [w/poll]
Sat, 22 Jun 2013As businesses look to keep high-level employees happy, it seems that use of company cars can still be an effective method, although fewer companies are employing it. According to Businessweek, only about 25 percent of companies offer company vehicles as a perk, while less than half give allowances for employees to use their personal vehicles for work purposes.
The report says that one business still in the practice of handing out company cars is The Cheesecake Factory, which offers the benefit to top managers. And we're not talking about some econobox, either. The article indicates the restaurant chain hands out BMWs on a three-year basis - although the company's own report says that the type of vehicle "varies with the executive's level."
Still, we mostly agree with the article's conclusion that money is the best way to keep employees or attract new ones, even if a corporate car is a big perk. What do you think? Let us know, in the poll below, whether a company car could sway you to work for a certain company (not just the Cheesecake factory, where the "Glamburgers" portion of the menu alone is enough to keep a guy hanging around).
