Hi, eBayers!  Up for sale is my 2003 BMW 540i M Sport, with a desirable 6-speed transmission, black on black color scheme, and a clean-as-a-whistle history.  I'm moving to a colder climate, which is the primary reason I'm selling this car.  Affectionately called the "Baby M5" by some, here's a great chance to get into a well-maintained vehicle with those classic BMW E39 body lines.  Make no mistake: there's plenty of room to go fast, too!

Take a look at the pictures, ask me any and all questions, and please note highlights and issues below.  I'm a car guy and open, honest transactions are a must for me.

Pictures galore: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ytm1vanj35y3tye/y__Njf4Iay

Highlights:
- extensive service history at reputable, independent shop
- I'm the second "real" owner, though the history may show three
- head gaskets and cooling system work, typical big repairs (>$2500) for this motor, are already done
- recently-installed OEM front brakes and all four tires
- runs like a bat out of hell, averages 22 miles per gallon with mostly highway driving at 85 miles per hour
- DSP audio system sounds awesome and with aftermarket parts, can integrate with the iPhone
- no dead pixels on the instrument cluster and climate control, about 50% dead on the radio
- desirable color, transmission, body style and kit combination

Known issues:
- missing rear door brake on the driver side (that holds the door open), which is a $15 part and a couple hour repair
- the passenger xenon headlamp just burnt out
- both front seats twist (this is a common and relatively easy repair), Google "bmw e39 seat twist" and check these links:

- most notable: the check engine light is on, reporting a failing oxygen sensor which I've replaced.  In no way is the car's performance affected, but buyer beware: if you live in a county/state with emissions tests, this car will not pass and you will be unable to register the vehicle!  Currently, this car doesn't have valid registration, but most states typically give an in-transit grace period as long as you keep the title and bill of sale on hand.

My mechanic thinks this may be a failing catalytic converter but, absent any spare parts to swap and test, there really is no way to fully diagnose without installing a new part.  This doesn't make personal sense because, as mentioned, I'm moving.  If you're in a non-emission county/state and a check engine light doesn't bother you, you can get yourself a heckuva car!  Again, ask me questions: I don't want to scare you away but must be up-front and honest.

Transaction details:
- full payment required on or before pickup
- payment methods accepted: cash, wire transfer, cashier's check/personal check (all checks must clear before you get the keys and the title)
- this car is for sale in other channels, and I reserve the right to end the listing at any time

Audi S3 pitted against BMW M135i in track battle

Fri, 07 Mar 2014

Audi and BMW have long been enemies on both the road and the track, with their respective M and S/RS lines duking it out to the delight of auto enthusiasts everywhere. In this video from Evo, two of the rivalry's newest combatants take to the track - the Audi S3 and the BMW M135i.
The new Audi S3, which is finally coming to America, throws down with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder. 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque are deployed to a Quattro all-wheel-drive system via a six-speed, S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission, allowing the five-door Audi to scamper to 60 in under five seconds.
The BMW, which Americans will know as a long-roof version of the new M235i Coupe, comes to the track with 320 ponies and 331 lb-ft of torque. That's a good bit more than the Audi, but the M135i has only two wheels to send its power to, an eight-speed single-clutch automatic (a six-speed manual is available) and a slightly higher curb weight.

2016 BMW X1 will be second model on company's front-drive platform

Fri, 08 Aug 2014

BMW is putting a lot of its chips on the success of its forthcoming front-wheel drive models, and it's making a big bet on the company's future in hoping that customers will accept them. Its front-driving UKL platform is underpinning not just the current crop of Minis but a host of BMW vehicles too. The rollout starts with the 2 Series Active Tourer in Europe later this year. But the Bavarian brand confirms to Automotive News Europe that the next one is the X1 crossover, slated to come to Europe next June. It will also be joined by the X2 next summer, confirming earlier rumors about the fashionable CUV's existence.
As the previous spy photos suggest, the X1 is even smaller than the current model, and it supposedly uses the same crop of turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines as Mini. But according to Automotive News Europe, the little guy is getting an extended, three-row version for the US, Russia and China. Like with the X4 or X6, the X2 shares most of the mechanical parts with its more conventional-looking sibling but features sleeker styling.
To make all of these UKL-based models possible, BMW is sharing development among them as much as is practical. According to Automotive News Europe, the next generations of the Mini Countryman, Clubman, X1 and X2 share the same electrical systems, drivetrains and more. Adding in the Active Tourer and still mysterious Family Active Sports Tourer to the mix, and the result is a big gamble that needs to go Bimmer's way.

The best cars we drove this year

Tue, Dec 30 2014

Six hundred and fifty. That's roughly how many cars pass through the hands of Autoblog editors every year, from the vehicles we test here at home, to the cars we drive on new product launches, testing roundups, long-term cars, and so on. Of course, our individual numbers vary due to several reasons, but at the end of the day, our team's repertoire of automotive experience is indeed vast. But let's be honest, some cars certainly stand out more than others. So as the year's about to turn, and as we're readying brand-new daily cat calendars for our cubicles, our editors are all taking time to reflect on the machinery that made this year so special, with one simple, open-ended question as the guide – a question that we're asked quite frequently, from friends, family, colleagues, and more. "What's the best car you drove this year?" Lamborghini Huracan When I review the list of everything I drove in 2014, picking an absolute favorite becomes almost impossible. I mean, how does one delineate between the joy offered by cars as different as the Alfa Romeo 4C, Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-AMG GT S and even the humble-yet-wonderful Chevy Colorado? Okay fine, I'll just pick the Lamborghini. I drove the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 on a racetrack, in the mountains, and along southern coast of Spain. It felt like the king of the car jungle in all of those places, sucking the eyeballs of observers nearly out of their heads as it drove by, and almost melting my brain with its cocktail of speed and grip and intense communication. It feels a little easy to say that the one new supercar I drove this year was also my favorite, but the fact is that the Huracan is one of the finest cars I've driven during my career, let alone 2014. Judge me if you must. – Seyth Miersma Senior Editor Rolls-Royce Wraith There are a couple of ways to look at the question, "What's the best car you drove this year?" In terms of what was so good I'd go out and buy one tomorrow, that'd be my all-time sweetheart, the Volkswagen GTI. Or if I'm just talking about sheer cool-factor, maybe something like the Galpin GTR1, BMW i8, or Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. But instead, I'm going to write about the sheer opulence of being the best of the best. The hand-crafted, holier-than-thou, shut-your-mouth-when-I'm-talking-to-you supremacy. I'm picking the Rolls-Royce Wraith. I drove the Wraith for a week in April, and was really, really impressed. This car does everything, perfectly.
