Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric equate BMW i3 with the Internet
Mon, Jan 26 2015BMW fancies its new i3 electric car as something revolutionary – which, to be entirely honest, it is. But while we as automotive enthusiasts might know this, the general populous may not, which is why the German company is shelling out what is no doubt a substantial sum of money for a spot during this year's Super Bowl. Starring former Today Show hosts Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel, the spot, called Newfangled Idea, focuses on another arguably misunderstood technology – the Internet. Starting with a now-humorous segment from 1994 that sees the pair discussing the then-new idea of the Internet – what does "@" mean? – Katie and Bryant then find themselves in an i3, asking very similar questions. Watch the BMW M4 drift around an aircraft carrier
Mon, 07 Jul 2014A Nimitz-class American aircraft carrier is big. Really, really big. After all, it has to be, in order to launch and recover a wide array of military aircraft. But when it's not catapulting F/A-18 Super Hornets and E-2 Hawkeyes into the wild blue yonder, what exactly can you use its 1,040-foot long flight deck for? Well, BMW seems to have an idea.
Now, obviously BMW hasn't paid Uncle Sam to convert the deck of the USS John C. Stennis into a racetrack (but what an idea!). That doesn't make this video of an Austin Yellow M4 slipping and sliding its way around the carrier deck any less entertaining. The video itself comes, weirdly considering the US aircraft carrier, from BMW of Canada, and we aren't really sure what the point of it is. There's no voiceover, or title or closing screens to lend the scene any context, and it seems unlikely that this sort of seemingly high-dollar video wouldn't be done sheerly for giggles. Whatever the reason for its existence, it's worth a watch.

Reverse-engineering i3 shows BMW profits after 20,000 sales
Tue, Jan 6 2015"This is, without a question of a doubt, the most advanced vehicle on the planet. It's as revolutionary as the Model T was when it came out." That is exceptionally high praise, and it's not even being heaped on one of the million-dollar hybrid hypercars from Ferrari or McLaren. It's not even being attributed to a particularly zealous Tesla fan. Nope, it's coming from a mustachioed man in suburban Detroit, and he's discussing a $42,400 BMW hatchback with Forbes. Of course, said hatchback is the revolutionary i3, and Sandy Munro's statements carry some degree of authority, as his company is tearing apart and analyzing every little nut, washer and bolt on the four-seat EV. Munro's eponymous company performs reverse-engineering analysis, meaning they rip apart brand new cars and sell the information to the world's automakers, saving OEM's both time and money. The most interesting thing it has discovered thus far? That even with the high costs of two of the i3's most important elements – carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and lithium-ion batteries – his company's analysis shows that BMW need only sell about 20,000 units a year to turn a profit, Forbes reports. While Munro's company is often contracted by automakers, he's gone it alone on the i3 project, dropping about $1 million into in-depth analysis. That's a lot of money, but the company should be able to turn around and sell its findings for about $500,000, with a batch of Chinese automakers already queued up and ready to buy. Analysis of individual i3 components will also be available from a sort of a la carte menu.
