All 5-Series come with comprehensive stability technology that includes dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, dynamic brake control. The entry level 525i, and 530i sedans come standard as rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel-drive systems running at a $2,200 premium. The 550i and M5 sedans are rear-wheel drive only, and the 530 wagon is available in all-wheel drive only. The 530 sedan and wagon feature a 3.0L inline-six engine that produces 255 horsepower. The 525's inline-six produces 215 horsepower, while the 550's V8 produces 360 horsepower.Standard features on the 5-Series include a power sunroof with an anti-trap feature, auto headlights, fog lights, power mirrors with auto tilt-down, and tri-zone climate control, and BMW's iDrive system. In addition to the powertrain upgrade, the 535 gets xenon headlights with auto-leveling and 10-way power front seats. The 550 trim adds Dakota leather seats and front and rear park distance control.Options for the 525i include genuine Dakota leather seats for $1,450 as well as a Premium Package that includes power driver seat lumbar support, interior illumination, and a universal garage door opener. The Sport Package upgrades the tires to 245 series run-flats, 20-way power front seats, active roll stabilization, and sport suspension. Active cruise control is available as well as a navigation system, and an audiophile Logic7 sound system with 13 speakers and twin subwoofers. The 530i offers two transmission choices beyond the standard six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is available, but so is a six-speed sequential manual gearbox that gives the user automatic and manual options and a sport dynamic driving control feature. The Premium and Sport Packages are also available. The Sport package upgrades the wheels and tires to 18-inch run-flats.The 550i also offers the same transmission choices as the 530i. The Sport Package includes the 18-inch run-flat tires as well as the 20-way power seats for $2,800. A Premium Package is not available on the 550, as the equipment is already standard on with the trim. The performance-oriented M5 is a whole other story. It comes with a 5.0L V10 engine that puts out a neck-snapping 500 horsepower. The standard transmission is a 7-speed SMG sequential transmission with 11 shift programs and launch control. A conventional 6-speed manual transmission is also available. The M5 stands apart from the rest of the 5-Series, and is one of the best performance sedans in the world. Every part of the car seems designed with high speed handling in mind. It's equipped with a high-output aluminum 5.0L V10 that uses stepless variable valve timing and direct ignition to generate a neck-snapping 500 horsepower. The engine is mated to a seven-speed SMG transmission with 11 shift programs and launch control. The wheels are driven with a variable differential lock and a special Dynamic Stability Control program unique to the M5. Further performance enhancements include M-specific suspension, cross drilled disc brakes, body panels with air intakes and spoiler, and even M-specific Merino leather heated power front seats. BMW details cheaper, sub-M performance cars for young 'brand ambassadors'
Tue, 11 Feb 2014BMW's M cars are undoubtedly some of the best sport sedans in the world. Unfortunately, their prices put them out of the reach of a huge segment of buyers, many of them young. However, that might change in the near future as BMW launches its M Performance Automobiles performance sub-brand, positioned between its standard cars and the full M models.
Traditionally, M car buyers have been male and in their early-40s, according to Oliver Ganser, product strategy manager for BMW North America, speaking to Automotive News. However with MPA, BMW hopes to find even younger buyers "who will be brand ambassadors and appeal to the real enthusiasts that we have," he said. These new MPA models will see a mild boost in power and handling from off-the-shelf parts, instead of the unique engines and cutting-edge tech from their bigger M brothers.
The M Performance Automobiles line was launched last March at the Geneva Motor Show with high-performance diesel models of the 5 Series, X5 and X6. The first of the MPA models coming Stateside, the M235i, launches in March. We liked it when we drove it in January, but the $44,000 base price is still a bit steep. If it proves to be a success, we will see more of them, and if not, then it'll go down as another failed experiment, like the 318ti hatchback.
Toyota GT86 engineers explored shooting brake and sedan variants, are they still in the cards?
Wed, 13 Mar 2013According to the Toyota UK blog, engineers for the automaker were so excited developing the GT86 coupe that they investigated producing a whole family of models based on the rear-wheel drive sports car. And at least one engineer - product chief Tetsuya Tada - still hopes it can happen, even if not everyone at Toyota is onboard. Tada: "Actually we tried to do this secretly but the executives found us out. They said: 'What are you doing? Will you please focus on the coupe.'"
Those mooted variants included both a four-door sedan and a shooting brake. Why? Aside from the pure excellence of a lightweight, brilliantly handling hatchback, Toyota was keenly aware of the fact that it may need to spread the cost of development out across several models. Tada says that's part of the reason why it was so easy to create the convertible. The company knew from the outset that a softtop version was in the cards, and built the machine's structure to accommodate having the roof sliced off.
Tada also made mention of the already-announced collaboration between Toyota and BMW. The engineer said that the GT86 was particularly helpful because it demonstrated just how successful a product conceived and designed by two different companies can be. While he didn't say exactly what Toyota and BMW are up to, it's clear the two are looking into a number of possibilities. It's an interesting read with a lot of

$1.8 million is spent each year to maintain GM's fleet of 600 production and concept cars.
When at least two of the Detroit Three were on the verge of death a few years back, one of the tough questions that was asked of Ford, General Motors and Chrysler execs - outside of why execs were still taking private planes to meetings - was why each company maintained huge archives of old production and concept vehicles. GM, for example, had an 1,100-vehicle collection when talk of a federal bailout began.
