BMW just the latest automaker to realize China will want a lot of EVs

With several of the world's largest cities, millions of cars on the road and huge problems with air pollution, it's no wonder that the nation is trying to make some changes. Along with decommissioning many of its aging vehicles, China is also expected to see huge growth in its electric vehicle market. BMW, as other automakers already have done, sees this as an opportunity to sell more cars. "We expect that the Chinese car market for electromobility will become the largest markets for those cars in a few years," says Karsten Engel, BMW's China head. BMW is collaborating with Shanghai's State Grid municipal power company to put public EV charging points at the former World Expo site, and the city plans to create 45 more by the end of the year. These will charge many different vehicles made by BMW and other brands. Tesla, which began delivering its Model S to China last month, plans to build its own supercharger network for the country. BMW plans to begin selling the battery-powered i3 and i8 plug-in hybrid in China this fall. BMW hopes to sell more than 400,000 vehicles in China this year. Fewer than 1,000 of those will be the i3, though, says Engel, due to a lack of supply. So far, China is falling drastically behind its own targets to get EVs on the road. With a goal of 500,000 by 2015, fewer than 70,000 EVs are currently operating in China. This numbers gap doesn't necessarily mean that the demand is or isn't there yet, but more and more automakers are betting it will be, and soon. Volkswagen is planning a fleet of electrified models for China by 2018 (at least 15 models according to Bloomberg). Daimler is teaming up with China's BYD to build EVs (and, of course, Your Dreams). Other Chinese companies are getting into the game as well. BMW to announce location of new plant in Mexico in July
Tue, 20 May 2014Volkswagen manufactures in Mexico. Soon Audi will as well, and Mercedes-Benz is said to be working on a deal to assemble some of its cars at a Nissan plant in Mexico too. That leaves BMW out of the mix of German automakers building cars South of the Border, but that may soon be rectified, as well.
According to Automotive News, the Bavarian automaker is preparing to announce the site of its first Mexican assembly plant as soon as July, now just two months away. BMW already builds cars for North American consumption at its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, but has reportedly been keen to capitalize on cheaper labor and the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement to supply vehicles to the United States and Canada especially.
When BMW does announce the site of the plant - reportedly narrowed down to either Hidalgo or San Luis Potosi - it is tipped to work its way up to 100,000 vehicles per year at the new location, potentially to include the 3 Series as well as smaller, front-drive models, including Minis.
BMW M6 amped up for track duty by Risden
Sat, 22 Dec 2012Risden Engineering is a bit of an unknown, if we're being completely honest - we have yet to report on the company to date, and its corporate website is really an information desert save for the name and a few email addresses. Even the press release that we requested from Risden's contact person is short and vague. That's all pretty much okay with us as long as the shadowy tuners, you know, make good on this sweet-looking BMW M6 racecar thing.
Dubbed the Risden 6R, we're told that the M6 modification will result in a vehicle that is more adept at track work, while still being street-legal. In terms of specifics, we read that a full aero kit will be involved, with one fixed and one retractable rear wing (hard to miss). There are obviously new wheels, and the company has also added a fully adjustable suspension, a four-point roll bar and a new braking system - all while reducing curb weight overall.
Apparently more details are to follow after the 6R's official release in the first quarter of 2013. We wait with bated breath.
