Drive Train Steptronic 5 Speed Automatic Trans, Rear Wheel Drive with Traction Control

Up for sale is my well-loved 2000 540i Sport Touring. I am selling because I have acquired a car I have lusted after for a long time (a 1988 BMW M6) so something has to go to make room in the garage.

This BMW 540I Sport Touring is not your mother's station wagon! It is fitted with the Sport package, which includes an aero body kit, blackout trim, sport suspension settings and 17" staggered wheels. It is a lot like an e39 M5 wagon would be equipped, if such a thing existed. I bought this car in May of 2004 as a lease return and have loved and trusted it for ten great years. It is the single most versatile car I have ever owned. It goes like stink, cossets like a 750iL, hauls everything from five skiers with luggage to estate sale furniture all the while getting about 20 miles per gallon. The engine starts right up, without smoke and idles smoothly. At idle the engine is near silent, but a gentle push on the throttle produces a low moan and a brisk getaway. A harder push on the pedal shoves you back into the seat while the engine makes a slightly angry V8 roar. It sounds a lot like a Corvette from about a block away. Unlike most luxury cars, this one always lets you know what the engine is doing, yet the sound is so rich it is never irritating.

The transmission is a 5 speed adaptive Steptronic, an automatic with a manual shift option. Shifts are smooth but audible. The manual mode works well, particularly on hilly, winding roads like we have around here. The interior is all leather and is very comfortable, showing some wear on the driver’s seat bolsters as shown in the photos. Everything works on the car except there are some pixels in the dash readouts, like those for the outside temperature, that are dim but still readable. Recent repairs include new power steering hoses and coolant hoses. Suspension bushings were all renewed within the last 10,000 miles. I wasn't worried about the mileage at 98,000 when I bought it and I'm wouldn't be worried now. The repairs have been nominal as I have serviced the car regularly and attended to any needed repairs throughout my ownership.

Sport suspension with low profile performance tires is all part of the Sport package. The wheels are great looking style 32 alloys of staggered 8” width in front and 9” width in back. Current tires are 235/45 X 17 Bridgestone Blizzaks bought last October with lots of tread still left. On the road, the ride is firm yet supple. The car feels carved from a single block of hard rubber, without a single rattle. It corners very well with minimal roll. There is never a shortage of power. I will go on record here that I prefer this car to my 2002 X5, which has the same engine, but is considerably bulkier without any more useable space. Yes, the X5 handles well for an SUV, but the 540i Touring offers even better handling in a tidier package. It actually feels much smaller than the X5. So why am I keeping the X5? It is set up with the towing package that I use from time to time to haul a recalcitrant Lotus Elan or Seven. Plus it has four wheel drive and my wife likes the higher seating position, but I will really miss this very versatile and fun to drive Touring.

I cannot think of another car that will provide this much competence, capacity and convenience for anywhere near this asking price. What other car can carry as much, go as quickly, look as stylish and provide such comfort for under ten grand? Please feel free to have your mechanic inspect this car or I can refer you to the independent BMW shops that have taken care of it for me. They will be happy to tell you all about it.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, BMW i8, Ford F-150 win 2015 Green Car Awards in DC [w/video]

Tue, Jan 27 2015

There were three shiny trophies handed out at the Washington Auto Show last week by Green Car Journal, and they went to three different examples of what "green" means in the automotive industry today. The Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel won the award for the 2015 Green SUV of the Year, the BMW i8 was named the 2015 Luxury Green Car of the Year and the Ford F-150 took the 2015 Green Car Technology Award honor. There is a case to be made that the aluminum body of the new Ford truck will make a bigger impact in the overall fuel usage in the US than almost any other vehicle, given the numbers of F-150s that Ford sells each year. The B20 biodiesel-capable Jeep gets up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. And the i8 puts all sorts of new, fuel-saving technologies into an attractive package. Looking over the winners, and the list of finalists you can see in our photo gallery, and you can see that the definition of green is expanding every year. You can watch Green Car Journal editor Ron Cogan hand out the 2015 awards in the video below and we'll for sure be paying attention to what wins next year. 2015 Luxury Green Car of the Year, Green SUV of the Year and Green Car Technology Winners Announced WASHINGTON, Jan. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Car Journal has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel its 2015 Green SUV of the Year™ and the BMW i8 its 2015 Luxury Green Car of the Year™, with the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150 earning the magazine's 2015 Green Car Technology Award™. Winners were determined by a jury of Green Car Journal editors and automotive experts. The prestigious awards were announced in Washington, D.C. today at a Green Car Awards™ press conference held during the Washington Auto Show's Public Policy Day at the Washington Convention Center. "These are truly commendable vehicles representing the 'best-of-the-best' in so many ways," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. "The auto industry's very early focus on small cars and efficiency-for-environment tradeoffs has evolved to now include a more dynamic field of 'greener' models in all vehicle classes. Those wanting greater efficiency or better environmental performance are no longer constrained by limited choices or vehicle types that fall outside their top purchase preferences.

Police arrest 'Fastest Lap Around Manhattan' driver [w/video]

Fri, 06 Sep 2013

Don't speed. Don't drive recklessly. Don't try to break the unofficial record for a lap of Manhattan. And if you go against this reasonable advice, do not, under any circumstances, record it and post the video on YouTube. If you do, you'll end up like Christopher Adam Tang - under arrest and facing a bevy of charges relating to the video.
Tang posted the video, which showed him lapping Manhattan in 24 minutes last Wednesday, and it quickly went viral. Now Tang, who went by the online moniker AfroDuck, is in cuffs. According to a local CBS affiliate, he was picked up at his home on Wednesday evening by police, who also seized the car used in the video, a 2006 BMW Z4.
What isn't clear is how Tang was caught. His video seems carefully done in that there are no outwardly visible signs that point to him, while the video itself is clearly sped up. While the NYPD hasn't come out and said that Tang was caught due to its extensive surveillance systems around the city, police commissioner Ray Kelly did point out that the new systems "will assist in this type of investigation." Let that serve as a warning to anyone that tries to break the 24-minute barrier. Scroll down to watch the full video.

This Or That: 1980 Oldsmobile 442 vs. 1989 BMW 635CSi [w/poll]

Thu, 09 Oct 2014

The last time I roped a coworker into an automotive debate, I lost. Resoundingly, I might add. Still, 2,385 voters chose to cast their lots for the Fiat 500 Abarth, as opposed to 5,273 choosing the Ford Fiesta ST, and so I can rest easy in the knowledge that at least 30 percent of you, dear readers, see things my way. I still like to think we have more fun, too.
My loss in the first round of our This or That series, in which two Autoblog editors pick sides on any given topic and then attempt to explain why the other is completely wrong, didn't stop me from picking another good-natured fight, this time with Senior Editor Seyth Miersma. Last time, our chosen sides were eerily similar in design, albeit quite different in actual execution. This time, our vehicular peculiarities couldn't seemingly fall any further from one another: A 1980 Oldsmobile 442 wouldn't seem to match up in comparison to a 1989 BMW 635CSi.
How did we come up with such disparate contenders? Simple, really. Seyth and I mutually agreed to choose a car that's currently for sale online. It had to be built and sold in the 1980s, and it had to be a coupe. The price cap was set at $10,000. The fruits of our searching labors will henceforth be disputed, with Seyth on the side of the Germans, and myself arguing in favor of the Rocket Olds. Am I setting myself up for another lopsided loss?
