1976 Bmw 2002 Base Coupe 2-door 2.0l on 2040-cars
I purchased this vehicle about 11 years ago from the California Bay Area. I have had most of the mechanical work done on the vehicle over that time period. That includes new tires, front end suspension parts, brakes, new battery, tune up, exhaust front to back. I have replaced most of the interior including very nice front seats from a "3" Series BMW. I also had the door panels replaced as someone had installed the "infamous" round speaker holes in the old ones. All window parts were replaced to make all windows operable. I have 4 Pioneer speakers (2 for back trunk area and 2 for under dash). I have not installed yet but a cd player/radio is also included. I have done this stereo installation in my other "2" myself and it worked out well. This one will need a little bit of console work. The dark blue carpet in in decent/good shape. It needs a new headliner (usually available on EBAY for $150 or so). I have chosen to wait on headliner as roof needs some minor dent repair and likely needs accessed from the headliner area. A couple of nice features include a wooden Nardi steering wheel (Oak I believe) and a very nice set of Borbet wheels. Other new replacement parts include, alternator, voltage regulator, fuel pump and fuel hoses. 4 Speed transmission and clutch seem in fine shape and shifts smoothly. Mechanically, I have it pretty well dialed in. Our Family has been BMW owners since 1988 and I believe we have something like 9 in the immediate family currently. I have just picked up 3 more this year (2003 X5 for the horrible winter we just had, A Dinan 2001 540I with 6 speed manual and M upgrade, and a daily driver 2003 530I), so I am starting to run out of both garage space and time to have the various restoration projects managed. Time for someone else to have some fun, no sense for this one to sit in the garage, by the way, if you are unfamiliar these 2002's handle in an amazing fashion, just a blast to drive. On the rare occasions that we have let go of "one" over the past 20 years, the buyers have been extremely pleased as we do not skimp on maintenance. Most of the work on this on was done by Rick Vaughn (Vaughn Motorwerks in Zionsville, IN) and by Thomas Gill at AutoBahn ServiceCenter in Greenwood, IN, a couple of top shelf 2002 mechanics.
This vehicle needs as it's last stage, some light exterior body work and a complete paint job. While the body is in very good overall shape, there is are dents in the top above the driver window as mentioned above, and someone has used a spray can to "touch up" some areas. They also used a black gloss spray can to paint most of the rubber molding on the bumpers and bumper trim. They put a really nice looking set of mirrors and fog lights on it just after they finished spray painting as well. Mechanically, the car runs great and when driven, there are always people wanting to take a look at the vehicle at stoplights, etc. The vehicle gets great gas mileage. I don't believe the heater blower motor works but I have never driven it in the winter so mostly a non-issue. This car has the original equipment Solex carb. which is very functional and pretty easy to start, not overly cold natured. My other 2002 has the Weber conversion with choke and it is very sensitive to start and get proper carb adjustment and to restart after you have come out of the grocery store, this one always starts right up when warm to any level!. Although the exhaust is new, it seems to have a bit of an exhaust leak that you can hear when warming up, likely needs a gasket or two. Both door handle locks will need to have cores put in, they are empty of lock cores at the moment. And I believe I broke the license plate light on the right side recently. My next step for this vehicle would have included a header, removal of California Emissions items, an Ansa Exhaust to give it a little sound and of course, the body work and repair or replacement of bumper trim, windshield trim, etc. These cars are becoming very rare to find in any type of decent condition, especially the Midwest. For under 10k when done, you can have a really fun little car that will very likely hold or increase in value. I would welcome interested parties to come take a look at and drive the car. I am glad to answer any questions that you may have. I have owned at least one Model 2002 since the end of calendar year 2002 and likely always will. Thanks for considering. |

Recharge Wrap-up: Batty battery covers, Mercedes at Silvretta, new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid available in 2015
Tue, Jul 8 2014Apparently, Chevrolet Volt battery covers make suitable homes for bats. As part of an Eagle Scout project, Matthew Netherland created 30 bat houses out of scrapped Volt battery covers donated by Chevy. 22 of the bat houses will be set up near hydroelectric dams in Michigan. Each bat house will accommodate 100 bats, and divert the scrapped materials from the landfill. The battery covers also make great nesting boxes for wood ducks, which General Motors has previously set up at its Milford, Michigan Proving Ground. Last weekend was the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, which saw emissions-free vehicles cross the Montafon Mountains in Austria, including cars from Mercedes-Benz. These cars included the B-Class Electric Drive, B-Class F-Cell, SLS AMG Electric Drive and even the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. Also on hand for the Silvretta Classic Rally was a V8-powered C111, a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC and 300 SL Roadster. Read more in the press release, below. BMW has finalized pricing for the i8 in the US at $135,700 (plus $925 in destination charges). In addition to the base price tag, which we've known for a while, BMW Blog has the complete pricing guide with options and packages. Most of the i8 orders were the Pure Impulse World package, which includes various aesthetic upgrades. It also provides membership to the BMW i Pure Impulse Program, which allows you to "to enjoy innovative ideas and trends in a variety of areas, including home styling, culture, gourmet gastronomy, design and many more." Head over to BMW Blog for more information. The new generation of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will arrive later than the rest of the model lineup, confirms Car and Driver. While the gas-powered Sonatas get updated now for the 2015 model year, the Hybrid remains unchanged until late this year or early 2015, when it will arrive as a 2016 model. Hyundai is offering a 2015 Sonata Eco edition, but with 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway (32 combined), it's not quite as appealing as the current Sonata Hybrid's 36/40/38 figures. Read more here. In June, average US fuel economy was 25.5 miles per gallon, making it the fifth straight month above 25 mpg, according to University of Michigan. The average window sticker ratings from vehicles sold in June dropped slightly from 25.6 mpg in May. The year started at 24.9 mpg in January, and hasn't dropped below 25 mpg since.
Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers
Sun, Mar 29 2015As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. The Homer to contest 24 Hours of LeMons
Thu, 27 Jun 2013It's finally happened. A 24 Hours of LeMons team has built the definitive interpretation of The Homer from The Simpsons for competition in an upcoming race. As you may recollect, The Homer is the fictional car designed by Homer Simpson for his brother's car company. Designed with a separate compartment for screaming children and other Homer-centric goodies, the animated machine bankrupted its parent company and put Homer's brother out of a job. Now we get to watch it race other crap cans as it tackles Southern California's Buttonwillow Raceway on June 29. Scott Chamberlain, Kris Linquist, Reid Conti, Ben Reilly and Mike Yepes will helm the machine, and Jeff Herman serves as the team's creative director.
The racer is the latest incarnation of a well-abused BMW 3 Series. The team campaigned the same E30 under the "Prickstine" banner as a Chrysler Imperial tribute and "Porcubimmer," the latter being a riff on the ever-popular joke about the difference between porcupines and BMW models. Never gets old. You can check out a video of the finished Homer below, and be sure to like the team on Facebook to see updates from the race. Now, about that Canyonero...
