1973 BMW 2002

2.0L, E21 head

Weber 32/36 dgv w/ manual choke

VIN 2590293

The original owner drove the car for 20 years, putting 156K miles on it. He maintained it well and decided to turn the car into a racer. He installed new Bilstein racing shocks and new Eibach springs. He also installed the Zender rear spoiler, the aftermarket sunroof, removed the entire metal waist moulding and filled all the holes.  At a point nearing the end of his 20 year ownership, he had the shock towers repaired professionally (see pictures). He also painted the body Chamonix white from the original Sahara tan. He then sold the car to its 2nd owner, who did loads of work to the car and after roughly 14 years of owning the car, he (the 2nd owner) sold the 2002 to me.

During possession of the 2nd owner…

He installed the drivetrain from a restored 73 ‘02 totaled rollover, which he had previously acquired. The motor from that car was a 1975 (e21 head) which was completely rebuilt, bored and balanced, new cam and some bottom end work as well.  The transmission (rebuilt) was solid with no synchro issues. The clutch was also new. The driveshaft was rebuilt as well.

I have since replaced the thermostat and flushed the coolant system. Included in the sale comes an extra water pump. I have also recently replaced the starter. The Carburation which was installed is a Weber 32/36 DGV with manual choke and K&N air filter. Since then I have installed a new set of plugs, wires and a new coil pack. During being away at school the car had to sit for quite some time and when I went to run it again, I messed with the timing, in doing so my adjustable timing gun broke so I had to use an older one… Due to this I had to set the timing back to base timing and have not finalized it for final ignition. The car starts, runs and drives down the road, but due to the gummed up carb, old points and base timing, it only runs at about 30% of capable performance. To bring it back to proper driving excitement means only a small amount of light work. Included in the sale is a new set of points and a nice set of Bavarian Autosport Wires.

The 2nd owner installed a brand new ANSA exhaust system; with a 2002Tii exhaust manifold.

He also installed new brakes front and rear with cross drilled rotors and new brake hoses. In addition he installed factory rebuilt front brake calipers. Included in the sale, is a set of rear drum pads (one side only) and a set of front caliper pads (one side only). The only part of the drivetrain that is original is rear differential.  (It is still working fine, however an additional differential is included in the sale.) In addition I will give another spare steering box with the sale.

The ’02 is mounted on a set of performance Sumitomo 195/60-13 with BBS style OE equipment 320is wheels 13x6. (Currently, June 2014, the tires are cracking pretty significantly and should be replaced.)

EXTERIOR:

The front grilles are later '02 model plastic grilles, which he installed. Headlights are Hella H-4 element style. The rear bumper is a '71 '02 short sided bumper. Rear trim and taillight rims painted black. He installed a new front windshield and replaced all the other glass. He also installed pressure sensitive adhesive backed black moulding to replace the waist moulding. All side marker lights and reflectors were removed and holes were filled to simulate the look of the older 2002. I have since painted the front grills, kidney grills, rear light surrounds and trim. The original owner removed the front bumper and I have since installed a front valance from Bavarian Autosport.

INTERIOR:

The 2nd owner Installed new black carpeting and all the original black interior panels which are in Very Good/Excellent condition. He also installed original equipment BMW Recaro seats from an ‘83 320is. They are in fantastic condition and mounted onto the 2002 seat tracks. The rear seat (both parts) are still in very good condition with the original horsehair padding. Headliner is solid with no rips along with the sun visors. The dash pad is a one piece unit from a 74 ‘02. It has a few small to medium sized cracks. The original ‘bus’ steering wheel is still in excellent condition with a leather cover.  The original analog radio is gone, but I’ve installed a newer cd player with axillary port. I have also installed two rear speakers for music enjoyment, nothing serious or obnoxious.

BODY CONDITION:

The major 2002 issues have been addressed.  As stated above, Rear strut tower decay/rust/rot is NOT an issue on this example AT ALL. As seen in the photos, the rear strut towers are close to Factory NEW. The spare tire well has some very minor surface rust in spots but is absolutely solid (as seen in photos). The body is straight. The front directional areas are solid. Rocker panels are good. Wheel arches are good. Rear suspension mounts are good. Wheel wells are solid. Floors are solid, with some surface rust, but completely structurally sound. The biggest area of concern is the driver’s door; with some small rust holes coming through at the bottom and some sheet metal waves and imperfections (as seen in photos). A few years back I spent many hours applying Eastwood’s Rust Encapsulator to the undercarriage of the car (general tlc and a fun way to get to know the car)

All ISSUES that could be of any concern:

-As stated above, the timing is currently set at base; and requires adjustment for completion.

-The carburetor is gummed up a bit and could use a rebuild or at least a cleaning.

-The points are a few years old and should be replaced soon. (new points kit come with sale)

-The oil dip stick sleeve which was originally pressed into the block, has come loose over the years and leaks oil at a Very Very slow rate. (of no real concern, but should be addressed)

-The front left frame rail has metal welded to strengthen it; which fyi does not affect drivability at all. (see photos)

-Motor mounts and Tranny mounts are in need of replacement (A new set of mounts comes with the sale of the car)

-There is some minor rust which came through on the driver door bottom, and sheet metal imperfections/creases. (see photos)

-Both doors have very minor sagging and could use adjustment.

-Some of the rubber and cloth window seals are getting old. (see photos)

-Passenger window has trouble cranking up due to falling out of track occasionally.

-There are some dash cracks. (see photos)

-Driver’s interior door card has some snapped off fasteners, which are easily replaced (see photos)

-Paint is good with some flaws i.e. various chips, clear fade and other minor issues. (see photos)

-Bottom of Rear sub-frame has some rust, which does not affect drivability, but should be addressed (see photos)

-Speedo is non-functioning

-Shifter has movement due to worn linkage collar

-Non original sunroof

If any of these issues bother you, please do not bid on this car!

This is not a stock automobile. If you are looking for a 2002 for investment quality, this car is NOT for you. It was put back together from parts of various year 2002’s to be driven on the street. The 2nd owner had put only about 3000 miles since the reassembly 14 years ago; and I have put an additional 2500 miles on it. It corners incredibly well due to the stiff suspension. It rides surprising smooth too, not as harsh as you would think.

This car would make a great auto crosser or vintage racer, as it is already prepped to do so. It is also a fine street driver. It has been garaged the majority of its life with adult care and attention to preservation. I personally have an Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology, and currently I’m going back to school for Transportation Design. The previous (2nd owner) has owned/worked on 2002’s since 1974 and had owned 22 of them!

Between the Original owner, the 2nd owner and myself; the 2002 has been looked after and maintained properly with a focus on the legend of BMW’s sporting heritage and the enjoyment of drive.

. $500 non-refundable deposit is required at end of the auction from the serious bidder. Anyone who is serious about purchasing this car should send me an email through Ebay. I will then send you my phone number and we can discuss the car, any questions and your intent on purchasing this vehicle. I have the right to cancel any bids over the reserve price from Ebay members with less than 5 positive feedbacks unless we have been in contact.

Due to the '02 not having current inspection, Please bring a trailer or dolley

Thanks for reading up on my 1973 “roundie”  2002.. Don’t miss out to own the Grandfather BMW’s sporting sedan pedigree! Cheers

More details emerge on hotter BMW i8S coming next year

Thu, Nov 27 2014

The BMW i8 recently won the Autoblog Technology of the Year award, and it's going to get even better. In October, Automobile magazine reported that BMW's i brand is working on an i8S that would be stiffer and more powerful, and celebrate the marque's centenary in 2016. At the time, one of two power unit combinations was suggested, either one of them good for more than 500 horsepower. Car magazine has added more info on the coupe said to be called Project M100, saying that in addition to being a birthday gift for BMW, it will also be a going-away statement to current chairman Norbert Reithofer, who is expected to retire in 2016 or 2017. It will also be so thoroughly reworked that there will be plenty of daylight between it and the standard i8: a more integrated carbon fiber and aluminum chassis, a wider range of materials used in the build, a larger luggage bay due to the omission of rear seats, a more aggressive suspension supporting heartier brakes and wider tires, and - perhaps - a different aero and ground-effects package to be visually different and make the most of the alterations. As for that power unit, Car says that the two options mentioned by Automobile are still under consideration, being either a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder with 320 horsepower and a 204-hp electric motor, or a 3.0-liter straight six with 480 hp and an electric motor with 109 hp. Either choice gets an integrated starter motor good for another 27 hp, and a total torque number of roughly 520 pound-feet, 100 additional lb-ft than the current car. Word is that it will be shown for the centenary in 2016 then go on sale by the end of 2017.

Ford, GM still doing new business with Takata amidst airbag crisis

Thu, Nov 20 2014

Lengthy vehicle development times make it difficult for automakers to cut and run from the supplier. You might expect automakers to be fleeing any connection with beleaguered supplier Takata in the wake of the company's exploding airbag inflator crisis. After all, with a Senate hearing, pending lawsuit, plummeting stock value and demand for a national recall, the tier-one supplier isn't at its strongest right now. However, years of cooperation mean that automakers are standing by Takata, and necessity may be playing a role, as well. About 39 percent of Takata's business comes from airbags, and seatbelts make up another significant chunk of the operation too, says Bloomberg. The long-term relationships and lengthy vehicle development times make it difficult for automakers to cut and run from the supplier. "Takata has so much product breadth that I don't really see that they could just disappear," said AutoPacific analyst Dave Sullivan to Bloomberg. For example, Takata helped develop the unique front center airbag with General Motors in models like the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. Outside of safety tech, it is also a partner with Ford on the adaptive steering system available on the upcoming 2015 Edge. These long-lasting partnerships make change difficult now that there's a problem. According to Reuters, automakers claim it would take a year or longer to set up with a different supplier for replacement airbag inflators. Switching to a completely different part for the repairs might not be a viable option either, because of the engineering time needed. BMW is taking action, though. According to Reuters, the Bavarian brand is working with the supplier to move inflator production from Monclova, Mexico, to a Takata factory in Freiburg, Germany. The Mexican plant may be the source of some of the faulty parts. News Source: Bloomberg, ReutersImage Credit: Jens Meyer / AP Photo BMW Ford GM Safety Takata airbag recall

2015 BMW X6 stays the course with more power, RWD model

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

What would this world be without the BMW X6? Oh, sure, the whole coupe-crossover design trend surely would have started somewhere, but BMW was the first, launching its odd duck back in 2008. Much as we like to harp on the X6 (for being less functional and more expensive than the X5 on which it's based), people around the world sure do seem to like the thing, BMW having sold some 250,000 examples since the CUV's birth. And as you first saw thanks to leaked images this morning, the second-generation X6 has just arrived.
The shape is familiar, as are specific styling elements like the larger headlamps (now available with a full-LED treatment) and taillamps, mimicking those found on the X5. Two trims are available - xLine and M Sport - the former taking a more subdued approach, while the latter uses the traditionally bulgy and aggressive M-badged kit, with larger air intakes and matte aluminum grille bars. All X6s come standard with 19-inch wheels, and 20s are optional.
Regardless of trim, BMW will now offer the X6 in three guises here in the United States: sDrive35i, xDrive35i and xDrive50i. Dissecting the nomenclature, that means the first two models will be powered by BMW's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, good for 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The sDrive X6 uses rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive, of course, uses all-wheel drive. Moving up, the xDrive50i uses the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as its predecessor, though power has been increased to 450 hp and 480 lb-ft. All X6 models are fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW says that the new powertrains are more efficient than before, though official fuel economy numbers have not yet been released.
