This is a 1972 BMW 2002 4 speed rolling project. The car was initially going to be the subject of a 2002 Turbo Clone type build, but plans have changed as they tend to do. The car was chosen primarily because of it's structural integrity and general lack of rust in the important areas. There are areas that will need attention, and the car isn't pretty, but this may fit your 2002 intentions and may be better than the car you're about to start on.

This car was originally silver, and started life in Southern California. At some point in time it came to Texas, and was last registered here in 2005 based on the stickers on the windshield. It had AC installed as well. The car has a clear Texas Title, no issues.

In anticipation of the build, the prior owner removed the original engine (it's long gone) but the original 4 speed is still in the car. The interior was also mostly taken out and some other odds and ends were removed. I've put most of the pieces back, but that's honestly just for organization (and these pictures) - expect to rebuild everything on this car, and having another parts car isn't a bad idea either as there are items that are missing (like a drivers seat). The prior owner also collected both a left and right door shell to replace the doors on the car. They're included. There is some waviness in the left rear fender, and the rear of both front fenders have bubbling. The roof has a large (but tough to see) depression in it. The only rust on the floors is on top of the pedal box, where a small patch will be needed. I've taken as many pictures as I could in broad daylight to illustrate the condition of the body. The shock towers are as solid as the day they were made in 1972. The pictures will tell the rest of the story of the body.

The car rolls, steers, and stops (with the handbrake) and can be easily pushed around with one hand. What you see is what is being offered in this auction.

In addition to this rolling body, I also have a 1974 Tii engine and 320i 5 speed that I'll offer the winning bidder for an additional $600. The engine has been dissasembled down to the short block, but turns over by hand. The head, fuel injection, and intake are in boxes. I can't guarantee every little piece is there, but it's a great start on a good Tii engine if you need one.

Please look at the pictures, and please don't underestimate the time or money (and probably both) it will take to get this 2002 back to life - Whether you want to get it back on the road or take it weekend racing it's a full rebuild if anything - but this is a good starting point for a car that seems to increase in value every year.

I'm north of Dallas, TX. This car has a clear title.

BMW pitting self-drifting car against drift champion

Mon, Mar 9 2015

The BMW M235i certainly makes a capable drift machine. Last year, the Bavarian brand had five of them with the tail out in unison in South Africa for the Driftmob. The coupe even proved that it could slide without a driver's intervention. For the latest sideways stunt, the company wanted to know which was the better drifter: an autonomous car or a human. This clip is just the trailer for BMW's entire drift challenge video, and it seemingly gives away the ending of the whole thing. We're sure, though, that there must be something more to the stunt than what's on display here. The driverless Audi TTS from Stanford University was reportedly slightly faster than an amateur racer around Thunderhill Raceway Park recently, and BMW has also been working at this problem for years with things like its Track Trainer. Regardless of how you feel about driverless cars, it's amazing how quickly autonomous tech is progressing – even on the track. BMW i3 starts near $35,000; NA first deliveries January 2014

Mon, 08 Jul 2013

While in Germany at the first early pre-production drives of the hotly anticipated BMW i3, BMW people finally hinted at a price ballpark. Numbers being tossed around by pundits have actually been pretty close to what BMW is discussing internally - between $35,000 and just over $40,000. We have been assured now that the base price, should one choose to buy and not lease in the Euro zone, is just over 35,000 euro, with some big taxes included in that price. In the US, the starting price for the fully EV plug-in version should be $34,500 or right thereabouts. In addition to new pricing, we've also gotten our best-yet look at the i3, with the freshly uncovered spy shots you see here.
European deliveries begin in November of this year for the fully electric version of the rear-wheel-drive i3 with 168-horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The e-motor mounted over the rear axle is supplied with energy by the 22-kWh lithium-ion battery pallet under the passenger compartment. Recharging happens in any of three ways: public or personal garage plug-in charge station (garage version not included in the price), the onboard system's Pro Eco mode that adds resistance to the drivetrain in a type of rolling brake energy recuperation, or through the normal brake energy and off-throttle coasting regeneration more common to EVs. Range on a full charge of this drivetrain is said to be upwards of 100 miles under hyper-miling conditions.
Perhaps the best bit of news is that the alternative, range-extending, two-cylinder 600cc engine supplied by BMW Motorrad for the hybrid version of the i3 - mounted in the rear together with the e-motor - will add only 2,000 euros in Europe and about $2,000 in the US. This is a range-doubling solution that could have brought a much higher price gouge, so thank you, BMW. The hybrid e-drive i3 version arrives a couple months after the full-EV launch version. Remember that, unlike the very similar system for the Chevrolet Volt, the system in the i3 supplies no mechanical torque to the driven axle and is only used as a generator (a system BMW first used last year in the 1 Series-based Active ). The US is seen as the clear number one market for the i3.

Ruby celebrates 90 years of BMW Motorrad with special helmet collection

Fri, 25 Oct 2013

BMW isn't the only one celebrating its own 90th anniversary building motorbikes. So is Atelier Ruby, that French manufacturer of jewel-like motorcycle helmets.
Ruby has just released a capsule collection of helmets marking BMW Motorrad's 90th anniversary, and we want them almost as much as a Bimmer bike itself. The Munich 90 collection includes three new designs available in three helmet styles, including the signature blue and red stripes on a white background worn by BMWs of two wheels or four on the racing circuit.
Of course, these helmets, being made by Ruby as they are, won't come cheap, with jaw-dropping prices ranging from $980 to $1,450. Of course there are more cost-effective ways to protect your noggin, but few more stylish.
