1972 BMW 2002 Racing Dynamics

 “Roundie”  E10

If ever there was an automotive trendsetter, BMW's 2002 was it.

This is the car that literally spawned the soon-to-be-popular Sport GT category and, in the end, was one of the main reasons that the Bavarian Motor Werks became the successful car company that it is today.

Speed Sports is proud to offer this ultra clean example of  a “Roundie” BMW 2002. This car with its extremely well documented history and great performance upgrades, I am sure will be very desirable and sought after.  It is rare to find a car of this caliber today.   We have a 4” thick folder of documents, original manuals, receipts and a logbook of everything done to this car.   Most of the work was done at a well-known local BMW shop Mike O’Hara.  The records date back to the mid-80’s and includes the last 2 owners.

The car was purchased by the most recent owner with 54800 miles in 1991; the speedo was replaced 3 months later with a higher top speed speedo that had 27790 miles.  Doing the math, this means the car has 86k original miles.  Very, low miles for a 42-year-old car.  The Prior owner spent $$$ on its restoration and performance upgrades.  I could not think of a better built 2002 than this one, everything was done right.  All of the Racing Dynamic upgrades , the suspension, and engine upgrades really make this a great Sports Car.  The matching Racing Dynamics wheels, steering wheel, spoiler and shift knob are in excellent condition and give this car a great stance.  The suspension is all Bilstien performance shocks and springs, big sway bars make it handle like it is on rails.   We replaced the old Yokohama A-509 tires with more modern rubber, and it goes down the road straight and true.  The suspension is very comfortable and not too harsh.  The engine was redone in 1988 and upgraded, about 40k ago, it was a complete, fresh, blue printed rebuild.

It has Weber performance carburetors and performance exhaust with a cookie cutter exhaust tip.   The motor starts right up and runs very smooth, with no smoke or bad noise.

We replaced some hoses on it, and gave it a full inspection as well as an oil change when we acquired the car.

I have put a couple hundred miles on this car running around town and it is a real hoot to drive.

The paint is very good looking, we had the front spoiler repainted, but the rest is how we got it.  It does not have any rust anywhere.  It is solid in all the bad areas that these car typically have. Floors, strut towers, rear shock mounts and all suspension points are perfect.  There are no surprises here.  The Paint is very glossy and has little marks or rock chips.

Again it has NO Rust what so ever!

The interior has Recaro seats and newer carpet, door panels and rear parcel tray.  It is all in excellent condition.   It has had some nice trunk panels built to protect things from denting the inside of the trunk and finish it off cleanly.   Other non-stock upgrades are; Alpine stereo system and alarm and power door and trunk locks/release.

For whatever reason the car has been driven very little over the last 14 years. It was stored properly in a climate controlled shop and we made sure to take all the proper steps when we brought it back into regular use.

This car is strong enough to be daily driven, autocross or kept in any collection.

We have gone through this car extensively, and it is in excellent mechanical condition.  Runs very smooth and strong.  It has had a full tune up with distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, filters, alternator, thermostat and oil change.

Every time I drive this car, I wish I could just keep it forever!

BMW Hack: the auto industry's big cyber-security warning sign [w/video]

Sat, Feb 7 2015

A cyber-security hole that left more than two million BMWs vulnerable may be the most serious breach the auto industry has faced in its emerging fight against car hackers. Security experts are not only concerned that researchers found weaknesses inside the company's Connected Drive remote-services system. They're worried about how the hackers gained entry. German researchers spoofed a cell-phone station and sent fake messages to a SIM card within a BMW's telematics system. Once inside, they locked and unlocked car doors. Other researchers have demonstrated it's possible to hack into a car and control its critical functions, but what separates this latest exploit from others is that it was conducted remotely. In an industry that's just coming to grips with the security threats posed by connectivity in cars, the possibility of a remote breach has been an ominous prospect. The fact it has now occurred may mean a landmark threshold has been crossed. "It's as close as I've seen to a genuine, remote attack on telematics," said Mike Parris, head of the secure car division at SBD, a UK-based automotive technology consulting company. "At this point, the OEMs are trying to play a game of catch up." Previous researchers in the automotive cyber-security field have launched remote attacks that are similar in nature, though not the same. In 2010, academics at California-San Diego and the University of Washington demonstrated they could remotely control essential functions of a car, but they needed to be within close proximity of the vehicle. In November 2014, researchers at Argus Cyber Security remotely hacked cars with an aftermarket device called a Zubie plugged into their diagnostic ports. But the remote attack was predicated on the Zubie dongle having physically been installed in the car. With the BMW hack, researchers compromised the car without needing physical access or proximity. The German Automobile Association, whose researchers conducted the BMW study, said it infiltrated the system "within minutes" and left undetected, a feat that raises the possibility that a hacker could do the same in a real-world scenario. Messages Were Sent Unencrypted Security analysts described the BMW infiltration as a "man in the middle" attack. Researchers mimicked a cellular base station and captured traffic between the car and the BMW Connected Drive service, which drivers can access and control via an app on their cell phones.

2015 BMW 228i Convertible

Thu, Feb 5 2015

BMW history is littered with small, four-seater convertibles that offer style, spirited performance and driving flexibility. These days it's the 2 Series range, not the 1 or the 3, that carries on the droptop-driver's-car tradition, and the 2015 228i Convertible will the first flavor of it to hit US shores. With prices starting in the upper $30k range, conservative but attractive exterior styling and just enough interior comforts and amenities to feel like a true-luxury player, the 228i makes a strong initial case for itself as either a first or second vehicle. Concurrent with my First Drive of the 2015 BMW X6 M, the Germans brought along their new 2 for testing along some pretty mellow Texas driving routes outside of Austin. With roads that ranged from sweeping country lanes to small town streets, and weather changing handily from cold and misty to bright and warm, I got a good sample of what the new open-top 2 can do. Drive Notes I'll admit to getting behind the wheel of the 228i convertible with a bit of a bias: the old 1 Series line, including the droptop, was amongst my favorite BMW models in years. In terms of overall character, this 2 Series has mellowed a lot versus the chuckable, cheerful 1er. The steering response isn't quite so whip-fast, and the longer wheelbase means it's less willing to rotate overall. Of course, the 2, especially in convertible form, does feel better suited for the stereotypical small, premium convertible driver, too. Ride quality over our mostly smooth-road drive route was placid and controlled, and steering still felt steady and weighty on center and with lock added in. The car also offers really well-sorted protection from wind buffeting and noise, both with the top raised and lowered. I drove topless on the highway and on surface streets, and was impressed at how cozy I felt with the wind deflector erected and the windows up. Cold-weather convertiblers should do well with this BMW (especially when the xDrive AWD car launches, later in the year). Erect the folding soft top – a feature that's available at speeds up to 30 miles per hour – and the NVH experience is transformed. BMW says that the top-up wind noise has been reduced "by half" versus the 1 Series – a fact that I had no trouble believing after the first few seconds. Wind rush is basically eliminated with the roof raised, and the car becomes a downright conversational space thusly set up.

Mini Countryman PHEV caught at electric watering hole

Fri, Jul 15 2016

Our spy photographers have once again found the next generation Mini Countryman out testing in the wild. This time, they caught it replenishing its thirst for electrons. Although we knew some sort of hybrid Countryman was coming, this confirms its existence and plug-in capabilities beyond any reasonable doubt. Like the rest of the Mini lineup, this new Countryman will be noticeably larger than its predecessor. It also appears to feature a larger, more aggressive grille and lower intake vents. Other than that, the car appears to be quite evolutionary in design. Our spy photographers expect the plug-in hybrid Countryman to debut in 2019 powered by a combination of the 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder and an electric motor. We have also predicted that the gasoline engine could power the front wheels while the electric motor (or motors) powers the rear wheels, which together could provide all-wheel-drive and 240 horsepower.
