Recharge Wrap-up: Car2go launches in Brooklyn, Green Fleet Car of the Year Award announced
Fri, Sep 26 2014 The Car2go carsharing service is starting operations in Brooklyn next month. Beginning October 25, the service will offer 400 Car2go edition Smart Fortwo vehicles for point-to-point travel. Members pay a one-time sign-up fee, and are charged by the amount of time the use the vehicle (fuel and insurance is free). Drivers can find a car using the Car2go app or website, and can return the car to any non-metered parking spot within the 36-square-mile Brooklyn Home Area. Car2go is offering free membership and 30 minutes of credit for those who sign up early with a special promotional code. Learn more in the press release below.Renault and the Eco2charge consortium are working to bring better EV charging to France. They are providing research and development aimed at turning simple charging stations into "fully fledged energy ecosystems" through a smart grid. This grid would coordinate charging, consumption and energy storage in a way that increases efficiency and decreases cost. Read more in the press release below.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance could source EV batteries from suppliers other than Nissan, according to CEO Carlos Ghosn. This news comes after recent questions of whether or not Nissan would scale back battery production in the US and UK. Ghosn says, "At the moment, we continue to produce our own batteries and we are open to outside sourcing, period." He also denies any plans to shutter Nissan's battery production facility in Tennessee. One source of batteries the alliance will look to is Korea's LG Chem. Read more at Automotive News Europe.
The first-ever Green Fleet Car and Truck of the Year Awards will be presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The presentation on November 20 will be part of the LA show's Connected Car Expo. Nominees are selected by Bobit Business Media, with finalists picked by readers of Green Fleet, Automotive Fleet, Work Truck and Business Fleet magazines. The winners will be chosen based on performance, fuel economy, emissions, safety, capacities and other similar factors. Read more in the press release below.

Brooklyn To Be First To Launch Point-To-Point Carsharing Service In New York City Area On October 25th
car2go North America LLC, the fastest-growing global carsharing company, announced today that it will be launching its pioneering carsharing service in Brooklyn on October 25th, marking Brooklyn as car2go's 29th market and the very first in the New York City area. Brooklyn, the fastest-growing borough in the city, will soon have access to the only true, point-to-point carsharing service in North America. Kicking off today and for a limited time, car2go will offer free membership, along with 30 minutes of drive time credit at Brooklyn.car2go.com using promotional code BKLYN.
"With its singular history, distinct culture and unparalleled diversity, Brooklyn exemplifies a way of life that is a perfect fit for our service," said Paul DeLong, CMO of car2go North America. "We're fired up to finally provide Brooklynites with a unique, technologically-advanced, on-demand service that not only fits the dynamic environment in which they thrive in, but provides a flexible convenience that's essential to their vibrant lifestyle."
On October 25th, car2go will begin to provide a network of initially 400 eco-friendly smart fortwo car2go edition vehicles for shared use, allowing members to use the service by the minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week – without committing to a specific return time or dedicated location. The initial car2go Home Area, where members can pick up or drop off a car2go, covers approximately 36 square miles, and will include neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Park Slope, Red Hook, Coney Island and Sunset Park, among others. Members will be able to explore outside of the Home Area, including Queens, Manhattan, Hoboken, and Jersey City, but must come back "Home" to end their trip.
"I welcome the addition of car2go to Brooklyn's highways and byways," said Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams. "As Borough President of our city's destination for innovation, I further applaud the 'drive' of car2go to shakeup the urban transportation landscape through the company's per minute fee structure and its environmentally-friendly fleet of cars."
Today, car2go is the fastest-growing global carsharing leader in seven countries with more than 850,000 registered members. As Brooklyn joins the car2go family in North America, members will have full access to use the service seamlessly in each of car2go's 15 locations – from Seattle to Austin, Miami to Montreal, making the network more convenient when travelling for work or play outside of Brooklyn.
FIND IT, DRIVE, IT, PARK IT: A DIFFERENT WAY TO CARSHARE
To locate a car2go vehicle, members will be able to find the nearest one via the car2go smartphone app, the car2go website, or simply by finding an available car on the street anywhere within the 36-square mile car2go Brooklyn Home Area.
When members are finished using a car2go, they may park at any on-street, non-metered space within the car2go Home Area. Members are asked to pay attention to the street sweeping guidelines in the parking rules, located at brooklyn.car2go.com. car2go will have targeted dedicated parking locations where metered parking is prevalent, and will announce those locations close to the October 25th launch of service.
Members can use the car2go service by the minute and will pay only for the time they use the vehicle, with discounted rates for hourly and daily use. There are no annual or monthly contracts required to use the service and parking, fuel, insurance and maintenance are included at no additional cost.

Renault is working with the Eco2charge consortium to accelerate the deployment of charging solutions for electric vehicles
The Eco2charge consortium coordinated by Bouygues Energie & Services is today launching an R&D program at the Federation Nationale des Travaux Publics*, 3 rue de Berri, Paris 8, to accelerate the deployment of charging solutions for electric vehicles. This project draws upon the expertise of partners in different sectors for the development of electric mobility: Actility, Alstom, Bouygues Energie & Services, CEA, Embix, Nexans, Renault and the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
This collaborative innovation aims to turn tertiary sites equipped with charging infrastructure into fully fledged energy ecosystems grouping power generation, consumption and storage on an interactive basis.
These local "Smart Grid" loops will deliver an optimal charging service for users, while limiting the costs of infrastructure, civil engineering, subscriptions and the energy impact of the site on the electricity distribution network. The ambition of the Eco2charge project is to develop and market a full solution within the next three years.
