Nissan recalling 104k Juke models over faulty timing chain [UPDATE]

General Motors isn't the only manufacturer that gets to issue a recall today, as Nissan is set to announce a voluntary recall of the 2011 to 2013 Juke due to a fault with the timing chain. 104,439 units are affected by this recall. The timing chain in some Jukes could deteriorate over time, leading to a warning light in the instrument cluster. In extreme cases, the chain could snap.

Owners of affected vehicles are being notified, and will need to report to their local dealership. The free repairs will replace the timing chain, chain guides and crank sprocket.

UPDATE: After publishing, Nissan communications representatives reached out to clarify that the timing chain issue with the Juke has been classified as a voluntary "service campaign" as opposed to a voluntary "recall." The presumptive difference in label here being that Nissan will issue a service campaign when it believes the defect in question does not pose a safety risk, but is "important enough to ask owners to come in for a remedy."

Nissan is conducting a voluntary service campaign on MY2011-13 Nissan JUKE vehicles to have the engine timing chain replaced. Nissan will begin notifying owners of potentially affected vehicles in May 2014, asking them to bring their vehicle in for service. Nissan will replace the timing chain, chain guides and crank sprocket at no charge to the customer for parts and labor.

Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service and satisfaction for JUKE owners and is working with its dealers to promptly address this issue.
