Hyundai spices up Euro lineup with i20 Coupe, i30 Turbo, revised i40

Thu, Dec 11 2014 Hyundai's model line in North America is made up of nameplates like Accent, Elantra and Sonata, but across the pond in Europe, the Korean automaker takes an alphanumeric approach. And it's just revealed a whole slate of new models.

Arguably the most enticing of the fresh batch of Hyundais destined for Europe is the new i20 Coupe. Joining the recently refreshed, Ford Fiesta-sized i20 five-door hatch, the new three-door gets a more rakish roofline, beefed-up wheel arches and other visual enhancements to appeal to a younger demographic. European buyers will be able to choose between four engines – two diesels and two gasoline units – ranging from 1.1 liters to 1.4 liters, offering anywhere between 74 horsepower up to 99 hp, with a new 1.0-liter turbo three to follow.

Hyundai Motor Europe has also revealed a refreshed version of its Focus-sized i30 with refreshed styling and upgraded equipment. The kicker, though, is the new i30 Turbo that packs the Korean automaker's 1.6-liter turbo four, but detuned from the 201 horsepower it produces in the Veloster Turbo and Kia Cee'd GT to "only" 183 hp. Although the refreshed i30 is available in three-door hatch, five-door hatch or wagon bodystyles, and with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch, the turbo engine is only being offered with the manual and in hatchback form.

Finally, Hyundai has also announced a refreshed version of the i40. Just a bit smaller than the Ford Fusion/Mondeo, the i40 is available in sedan and wagon forms, and benefits in this latest iteration from updated sheetmetal, a more refined cabin, upgraded equipment and a new diesel engine displacing 1.7 liters and putting out 113 or 139 horsepower, channeled through a six-speed manual or (on the more powerful version) a seven-speed DCT.

Interested parties will want to scope out images of all the new models in the accompanying galleries and details in the trio of press releases below.
DIFFERENTIATED BY DESIGN: HYUNDAI MOTOR INTRODUCES NEW GENERATION i20 COUPE

- Hyundai Motor reveals New Generation i20 Coupe
- Clear design differentiation for unique three-door
- Extends the appeal of New Generation i20 to younger customers

High Wycombe, 10 December 2014 - Hyundai Motor has today unveiled the New Generation i20 Coupe. For the first time, Hyundai has created a three-door B-segment car that is significantly differentiated from the five-door model. Its dynamic exterior and striking interior design are intended to attract young, lifestyle-oriented consumers, extending the appeal of the New Generation i20.

New Generation i20 Coupe has its own unique silhouette. The raked A-, B-, and C-pillars are markedly different from the five-door model, providing the Coupe with a more dynamic profile.

At the front, New Generation i20 Coupe takes a different approach to Hyundai Motor's characteristic grille design. The striking reverse hexagonal front grille sits in a new front bumper. Bold wheel arches –which dominate the rear quarter of the Coupe - lead into a new rear bumper design which creates an athletic presence. Despite its sportier appearance, the Coupe is still a practical car: the 336-litre boot space is best-in-class.

To further differentiate the three-door model, Hyundai has introduced a unique Tangerine Orange exterior colour and a matching orange interior colour option for the Coupe (in addition to the existing New Generation i20 colour palette). It also features a new 17-inch alloy wheel design and new rear spoiler, among other aesthetic enhancements.

The choice of Euro6 engines includes petrol and diesel power units from 84 PS to 100 PS. A new 1.4-litre 'Kappa' petrol engine will be available from launch, with a new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine joining the range later in 2015.

Designed and engineered in Europe, New Generation i20 Coupe has been developed to meet the needs of discerning European customers. Production of the New Generation i20 family, including the Coupe, takes place at the company's product plant in Izmit, Turkey.

New Generation i20 Coupe is one of many new models that Hyundai Motor will introduce under its Product Momentum 2017 launch programme, supporting the future growth of the brand.

Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty

Like all new Hyundai models, the New Generation i20 is backed up by Hyundai's unique, Europe-only, Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty package. This care programme provides customers with a five-year warranty with no mileage limit, five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.

HYUNDAI MOTOR REVEALS NEW i30 TURBO AMONG ENHANCED NEW i30 FAMILY

- New i30 Turbo model with 186 PS, 1.6-litre T-GDI engine tops the range
- Refreshed design for New i30 to boost its appeal
- New engine and transmission line-up enhances efficiency and driveability

High Wycombe, 10 December 2014 - Hyundai Motor has today introduced a range of enhancements to the New i30 range, including the addition of a range-topping i30 Turbo, a more performance-oriented model delivering a Nurburgring-tuned 186PS and featuring exclusive sporty design features. The complete range has been enhanced with improved engines, a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, safety and comfort features and refreshed exterior design, intended to make Hyundai's top-selling model even more appealing.

On sale from 2015, the New i30 range boasts improved engine efficiency across the new car's three bodystyles: three-door, five-door and Tourer. The new model range offers fuel consumption as low as 78.4mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 94 g/km.

Refreshed, sophisticated exterior design

Hyundai Motor's European design team has applied upgrades to the exterior, refreshing the look that has attracted positive feedback from consumers when the second generation was launched in 2012.

At the front, a new accentuated hexagonal grille defines the New i30 as a quintessential member of the Hyundai family. Further design enhancements increase the appeal of New i30 among C-segment customers, including the newly designed alloy wheels (16- and 17-inch), as well as three new exterior colours: Polar White, Orange Caramel and Jet Black.

Enhanced, efficient engine range

The New i30 is available with an expanded choice of engines - all Euro6 compliant - with power outputs ranging from 100 ps to 186 ps and CO2 emissions from as low as 94 g/km.

Buyers will have a choice of two diesel options – a1.6-litre engine available in two power output versions of 110 ps and 136 ps. Customers who prefer petrol can select from a 1.4-litre 100 ps or 1.6-litre 120 ps naturally-aspirated engine or the new 1.6-litre 186 ps Turbo-GDI engine.

The 100 ps 1.4-litre Gamma engine has been replaced by a newly developed four-cylinder Kappa unit. This 1352 cc engine is significantly lighter than its predecessor, the Gamma 1.4-litre engine. At only 87 kg, the engine's base weight has been reduced by 14 kg, resulting in lower fuel consumption of 50mpg and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km CO2.

The 1.6-litre diesel and the 1.6-litre petrol GDI engines are also now available with the new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). This option replaces the previous compact, conventional six-speed torque-converter automatic and it will deliver greater fuel efficiency while at the same time increasing acceleration.

Fuel saving technologies included: Integrated Stop & Go (ISG), low rolling-resistance tyres, an alternator management system (AMS) and a drag-reducing 'active air flap' in the front grille.

For improved active safety, the Hyundai Land Departure Warning System (LDWS) has will be available (available subject to market specification).

High-performance New i30 Turbo

For buyers looking for a more dynamic drive and distinctive styling, Hyundai is adding a new top-of-the-range Turbo model to the 2015 i30 line-up.

Powered by a 186 PS, 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, the New i30 Turbo has been developed with a focus on sporty driving dynamics and everyday usability. Acceleration to 62mph is achieved in 8.0 seconds and top speed is 136mph.

To complement the 28 per cent increase in power and 38 per cent increase in torque (over the 1.6 GDI model), the i30 Turbo is fitted with sports suspension tuning, new 18-inch wheels and tyres and more direct steering (2.78 turns lock-to-lock).

The New i30 Turbo will be available on the five-door model, in a range of unique paint finishes including the new colour: Jet Black –only available for the Turbo model.

Exterior design features bespoke to the New i30 Turbo highlight the car's sporty character including a new radiator grille, front and rear bumper with red detailing, new front LED design, twin exhausts and 18-inch alloy wheels. New interior design features include sports front seats, sports instrument cluster and contrasting red details on the steering wheel, gear knob and door trims.

New i30 has been designed and engineered at Hyundai Motor's European Technical Centre in Russelsheim, Germany and will be built in the region, at the company's plant in Nosovice, Czech Republic.

Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty

Like all new Hyundai models, the New i30 is backed up by Hyundai's unique, Europe-only, Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty package. This care programme provides customers with a five-year warranty with no mileage limit, five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.

HYUNDAI MOTOR REVEALS REFINED NEW i40 FOR EUROPE

- New i40 refined exterior and interior design
- Upgraded engine line-up and addition of new DCT for increased efficiency
- Improved ride and handling characteristics, plus new safety and comfort features
- Improved audio and navigation systems with added functionality and DAB radio on selected models

High Wycombe, 10 December 2014 - Hyundai Motor has today introduced its New i40 Tourer and Saloon, enhancing the brand's product line-up in Europe's competitive D-segment.

A flagship car for Hyundai Motor in Europe at its launch, the original i40 has achieved sales of 100,000 units and played an important role in changing customers' perceptions of the Hyundai brand.

The New i40 now features refined exterior styling, an upgraded range of responsive, efficient diesel engines, the addition of a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, improvements in ride and handling and several 'first-for-Hyundai' active safety and convenience features. Many of the new technologies were first seen on the new Hyundai Genesis.

Enhanced, elegant design

Designed and engineered at the company's European R&D headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the refreshed design for New i40 retains the distinctive visual appeal and practicality of the original model, combining practicality with engaging design.

Exterior enhancements include an updated design for front and rear lamps, a more sophisticated hexagonal grille, a new front bumper, and new integrated LED fog lamps as introduced in Genesis. The profile is refreshed by newly-designed 16- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Responsive, efficient engine line-up and addition of new seven-speed DCT

New i40 is available with an enhanced engine line-up of two Euro6-compliant diesel power units from 115 PS up to 141 PS. These have been re-engineered to deliver increased responsiveness and efficiency.

A new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is available for the upgraded 1.7-litre diesel engine with 141 PS. It provides improved fuel efficiency, and offers drivers fully automatic operation or manual gear changes through paddles on the steering wheel for greater driver involvement.

Technologies included: Integrated Stop & Go (ISG), alternator management system, and active front flaps help to further reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Improved ride and handling

For better cornering and to improve the overall agility, the New i40 now offers Advanced Traction Cornering Control (ATCC) (subject to market specification). The system uses electronic sensors to emulate the behaviour of a limited-slip differential during cornering, providing additional traction, better grip and improved handling.

New i40's Drive Mode settings are enhanced by the new Rear Electronic Damping Control System (ECS) (subject to market specification), which will be equipped on the rear axle of the most popular New i40 body type – the Tourer. The driver will also be able to adapt the suspension settings through the drive modes to suit his driving style. In addition to the rear suspension, the steering, the transmission logic* and throttle response* are all influenced by the selection. This technology follows the electronic damping control introduced on the Genesis.

Comprehensive new technologies

Hyundai has expanded the comprehensive list of available active and passive safety technologies for the New i40 even further. As well as the existing Lane Keep Assist System, additional functions include the new Smart High Beam (SHB) system (available subject to market specification), which monitors approaching traffic and automatically turns off the high beam to avoid dazzling other drivers. This system was first seen on the premium Genesis model.

The new Speed Limit Identification Function system checks roadside signs and displays a current speed limit alert to the driver via the new TFT display on the instrument panel. It is the first time Hyundai is bringing this technology to its line-up. (available subject to market specification)

Also introduced in the New i40 is the company's latest navigation technology with enhanced touchscreen functionality and new visualisation for better usability. The two new audio systems are available with several new features including DAB technology for the top version.

Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty

Like all new Hyundai models, the New i40 is backed up by Hyundai's unique, Europe-only, Five Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty package. This care programme provides customers with a five-year warranty with no mileage limit, five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.
