Bentley targets audiophiles with custom Continental at CES
Fri, Jan 8 2016Bentley brought a unique version of its Continental GT V8 S to CES this year, packing a unique sound system crafted by the audio trendsetters at Monster. And with it, Bentley's Mulliner customization department outfitted the luxury status symbol in singular style. The Monster by Mulliner features 16 speakers and 3,400 watts of aural stimulation for an in-car audio system not offered for production. In addition to the surround sound system, Mulliner decked the Conti out in Onyx black with red accents and gloss black wheels hiding red brake calipers. The interior features a custom 3D laser-etched dashboard panel and piano black trim as well as specific embroidery and tread plates. It even has a pair of 24-karat gold wireless headphones housed in a special compartment inside. The result is a decidedly different take on the ubiquitous luxury car than the stone veneer panels that Mulliner most recently announced. Bentley suggests in the statement below that the Monster by Mulliner will be offered as a limited edition, "designed to appeal to young professional athletes and musicians." It's certainly not for the timid, but we wouldn't be surprised to see them popping up in music videos and the parking lots outside stadiums in the near future. Tue, Jan 31 2017Over the last decade Bentley has done an excellent job in projecting a more sporting presence without in any way jeopardizing its luxury credibility. That luxury cred is again on the line with the launch of Bentley's new Bentayga SUV (pictured); its info is below. BENTLEY BENTAYGA: The biggest news at Bentley – literally and figuratively – is the arrival of Bentley's first SUV, the difficult-to-pronounce but beautifully executed Bentayga. Described as a 'true Bentley', the Bentayga provides expected luxury in combination with unexpected off-road performance. CONTINENTAL: More horsepower – up to 700 horsepower and 750 pound-feet of torque in the Supersports – is provided across the lineup, along with a new Black Edition available for both Coupe and Convertible. FLYING SPUR: A new V8 S model offers enhanced performance and 'sporting' luxury when compared to the more pedestrian V8. MULSANNE: Bentley's big four door receives significant styling revisions to the exterior, new and improved chassis technology and new on-board technology. How'd we miss this incredible 24-hour enduro in prewar cars?
Sun, Jan 11 2015Even in today's 24 Hours of Le Mans, not all of the racecars finish the event. Factors like like mechanical failures, crashes and poor weather that can be the doom of any race team. Now, imagine going to a track today and competing around the clock in vehicles built before World War II. That was exactly what the Benjafield's 24 did at the Portimao Circuit in Portugal in October. Somehow, we missed this spectacular event, and so did most of you, judging by the lack of media coverage it received. The event was named after Dudley Benjafield, one of the famous Bentley Boy racers and a winner of the French race in 1927. According to Goodwood Road and Racing, 21 prewar cars entered, and astonishingly, 20 finished. Teams of three or four drivers did two-hour shifts, and more than just old Bentley racers competed. Robbert Alblas, who also made the awesome video above, told Autoblog via email, "The organization is not a allowed to call it a race because of insurance reasons." Therefore, there were no official rankings of where the competitors actually finished. That's a pity, but it doesn't take away from how awesome an undertaking this was. While you can see cars from this period briefly racing at events like the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, witnessing them go for 24 hours is almost an impossibility today.
