Bentley Turbo RL

Bespoke order

1992

Rare Long Wheel Base with special options

Buyer's choice of wheels; 15" Factory originals with Avon Turbosteels or retro-fitted 18" 2001 Bentley Arnage wheels.

Here is a really stunning looking Bentley Turbo RL finished in Tudor Red with 2-tone black Connolly hides with burgundy accents (seat piping and floor rugs). The twin fine lines to the waist-rails are hand-painted in black.

The car was a "special order" thru Bentley's design studios by a prominent New York business man and the car predominantly used as a chauffeur car for family members to and from their family home in the Hamptons

This Turbo RL was a very unique order with factory fitted Sony video screens fitted to the rear of the front headrests. The system was bespoke designed by Bentley engineers to include plug-in headsets and controls in the center rear seat with fancy amplifiers and special speakers. The system is currently not operational and on current day technology standards is surely obsolete but it is still a very cool touch and a reminder of how design oriented Bentley/Rolls-Royce have always been. Even more special was that this car was ordered with not one, but two telephones - 1 in the front seat arm rest and 1 in the back.

This is a particularly unique example in that it is a Long Wheel Base ("LWB") which were built in limited numbers. Of all Bentleys built in the 1990s, less than 10% were the Long Wheel Base variant.

The Bentley Turbo RL is powered by a 6.75 litre Rolls-Royce designed V8 engine with the Bosch fuel injecton system and Garret Turbo-charger. Exuding in excess of 300 horsepower it pumped out over 500 foot pounds of torque. So she is quite spritely indeed and, quoting Modern Car's review upon its release; "such is the power of this 2.5 ton behemoth, when you power down streets in Sussex, she blows leaves off trees in Kent!". It has the look and a true behemoth it is! With the Tudor Red and completely colour-coded bumpers, this is indeed a handsome beast. 1992 also saw the introduction of the first new gearbox in some 24 years. Previously all Bentley and Rolls-Royces were 3 speed automatics but in this year model was introduced the GM 4L80-E four-speed automatic gearbox.

This is a "real" Bentley when they were an integral part of Rolls-Royce; built side-by-side Rolls-Royces using Rolls-Royce parts, Rolls-Royce engineering, Rolls-Royce manufacturing and craftsman, all on the same factory production line which made Crewe famous for everything and anything Rolls-Royce AND Bentley. (See Wikipedia link: Crewe factory)

This one is a well maintained example with a good clean Car-fax history*. Records show very regular and uncompromised maintenance. Being a Hamptons Chauffeur car, its 114,000 miles are all healthy "travel" miles. Please remember with these Bentleys, moderate miles such as this one has, is a good thing and considered ideal for these great cars. Well exercised journeys are the best, and it is no myth that low mileage cars can be as problematic as very high mileage ones. This car shows all the hallmarks of a perfect example in this regard. It has recently been thru Park-Ward's workshop, fully inspected, and anything requiring doing attended to - including all the hydraulics and braking system overhauled (pumps, accumulators, gas springs, etc). Mechanically, this car needs nothing and is entirely up to date on its services (major and minor!) including oils, fluids, trans service and belts. Under the bonnet, the presentation is amazing. It has not been precision detailed but simply kept clean and tidy throughout its life.

Photographs of the car show it with its original factory specification 255/65 15 Avon Turbospeed tyres on original Turbo R alloy wheels and also with a retro-fitted set of genuine 2001 Bentley Arnage 18" wheels and tyres. The car is being sold with its factory 15" set but should you prefer the Arnage wheels as photographed, these are available at extra cost. Please enquire.

The body of the car is straight and the paint deep in lustre and consistency. It does have a few minor little chips, minor blemishes and marks but these are few and only show if one looks hard. Otherwise it is very shiny without any fading, dents or dings and certainly presents very well for driver use. Rubbers, mouldings, badges and external fittings are all in good condition.

The interior on this car is quite stunning. The Connolly leather shows beautifully and is very original. It has never been re-dyed or messed with and yet remains very soft and supple without any signs of significant wear. The wood throughout is excellent and all original showing virtually no marks. Carpets, seats, dash, headlining and fixtures are truly excellent and I best encourage you to look at all the photos to fully appreciate how nicely the interior presents. Other factory fitted features to the car are rear picnic tables which were more commonly ordered for Rolls-Royces and not so much on Bentleys.

As part of Park-Ward's maintenance program, all electricals and features & functions have been inspected so everything is operating as it should; windows, seats, mirrors, A/C, heater, lights, wipers, etc. Right down to every light bulb in the dash. This is a true, "take the keys and drive" example with no additional budget needed to attend to any nuances or gremlins.

As a privately owned chauffeur car by wealthy owners most of its life, it has all the signs of a well-maintained example. It is tight to drive, brakes strong and rides as a Bentley should.

The car is of very high standard and is an easy 9 out of 10 driver rating. She is 100% factory original in specification in every respect right down to the 15" wheels and Avon tyres.

~~ This very masculine Bentley Turbo RL is a stunning example which simply oozes road presence! Being a rare and unique example, it makes for a wonderful addition to any collection or provide that special "oomph" for your Friday night ride! ~~

* The car was originally special ordered thru North America's Rolls-Royce and Bentley distributor and we suspect was imported via one of its Canadian dealerships prior to being delivered to its first owner in New York (or perhaps delivered to the first owner in Canada - we are not sure). As such, the car was fitted with a kilometer odometer and the Carfax report reflects all readings in kilometers. The odometer has been converted to miles and current indicated readings are quoted in miles. Notwithstanding, because of its age and to conform with state law, the car is being sold mileage exempt

Interesting bit of trivia:- when the factory built this car one of the boys at Crewe accidentally affixed the ID plates

to the right side front door pillar (where it would be for a right-hand drive car). I can see the gents scratching their

heads when they realised it was a LHD Bentley! So the solution? "Lets just install another set on the driver side too!"
Result: Only Bentley with ID plates on both sides!

Buyer's choice of wheels. For the purist;15" Factory originals with Avon Turbosteels or,
for the more adventurous; retro-fitted 18" 2001 Bentley Arnage wheels.

The in-car entertainment system cost some $7,000 when specially ordered thru Bentley.
Back in 1992, this was a very expensive option.

A note from RRMOTORSINC:

“For those Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts who have followed my auctions in the past I welcome you all. For those who are new to my adverts and/or the marque, please note that as a serious collector of some 30 years, all my cars are truly described examples. I have my own private Rolls-Royce and Bentley workshop (not open to the public but dedicated to my own cars) with trained Rolls-Royce and Bentley craftsmen who are proficient in all aspects. As a team, we are dedicated to the preservation of the marque and as such, any car that leaves the stable is completely inspected and work-shopped to ensure mechanical and operational items are maintained appropriately. We adopt a “keep it original” mentality with pride and confidence, offering after sales technical support and assistance well beyond the sale. Because most of my cars are offered for the pleasures of driving enjoyment it is not always possible or practical to seek perfection (in the true sense of the word) but we do always uphold excellence in whatever we do. Our cars are by no means cheap priced cars but we like to think they are amongst the best. To this end, I firmly believe in the famous adage; Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.” We hope you do to.”

*
We at Park-Ward Motors – the things we do.

When our Rolls-Royces and Bentleys are commissioned for resale, they are indeed professionally and correctly “fully work-shopped”. No corners are cut. And it is all addressed in true Crewe tradition. There is way too much to list here but to give you an example of our commitment to excellence of the various processes, this is one such example of what we do:

Doors and windows:-

Every car has its interior door panels removed. If the wood is in need of repair (as most are) it is refinished in-house by trained and talented craftsmen at Park-Ward Motors. This is a detailed process of stripping the wood of its old lacquer, repairing the veneer if there is damage, staining the top surface as per Rolls-Royce methodology and refinishing with no less than 25 coats of clear lacquer. Hand wet-sanded and polished between all of its last 15 coats. New window felt guides and wood-to-glass foam seals are fitted. All window mechanisms are checked and serviced for smooth and efficient up and down movement. This includes an electrical modification to rectify the typical “slow window syndrome”. All tracks, chains and gears are lubricated. Where central locking is fitted, these are all serviced to ensure no “solenoid sticking”, another common problem. Units are repaired and or changed as required for refurbished units. Door wiring and door-to-body wiring is checked, repaired and/or replaced as required. The splash plastic on the inside of the doors to protect the leather panels from rain splash from inside the door is replaced with correct specification black plastic as used by the factory. Cut to shape and glued in position as per original. All door hardware is checked and repaired as required including locks, handles and scuttle finishes. The door is reassembled with all items cleaned and polished. The wood refitted and the leather panels are re-Connollised before final fitment.

Take this example and apply it to the many, many different aspects of Rolls-Royce restoration, service and maintenance and you have our dedication to correct and professional vehicle pre-delivery preparation and commissioning.

Standard Terms & Conditions for all Rolls-Royce & Bentley sales by RRMOTORSINC:

This Bentley is part of a private collection. Although licensed and bonded, I am not a main-stream retail car dealer or broker; I am a professional car collector of some 30 years with considerable experience and knowledge of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars. I have a long standing reputation being associated with the marque which I take seriously. I take pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them. However, auctions are not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid or make an offer and I openly welcome any potential buyer to come and personally inspect the car. Once you bid or make an offer, you are doing so to buy WITHOUT conditions. Your bid can not be subject to anything. A $2000.00 deposit (non-refundable) is required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal. The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire. I cannot accept PayPal for the balance. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. All payments are non-refundable. Payments as described above form an important part of this purchase contract and so, if all the funds are not received as outlined above, I reserve the right to terminate the transaction without notice. If there has been any deposit or other part payments received and I elect to terminate the contract, I reserve the right to keep any such deposits or payments and resell the vehicle to another bidder or interested party or re-list the vehicle at any time. To be clear, if you change your mind for ANY reason and do not complete the transaction in the time-frame required, you will forfeit your deposit. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a national and worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost.

As a collector and experienced restorer of the marque, I make every effort to bring my cars to a high standard. By comparison, my cars are generally superior to others available but they are by no means perfect. You must expect some issues. Unless specifically stated, the car is not of show standard but of nice "driver" condition. Please understand, show cars of this model cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to achieve and sell for prices commensurate, so the sale price of this car reflects its relative condition. You are buying "condition" accordingly. Buyers should not expect to receive concours quality or "perfect" cars at these prices. Please also understand, the very nature of these classic Bentleys is such that it is not always possible to attend to every item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked items. Further, and very importantly, these cars are classic cars also because they are old. So this means a 20 year old car is predominantly comprised of 20 year old parts. And old parts will fail. All buyers must understand and expect that things can or will wear out, break and/or stop functioning without notice. This is even more likely with hand-built English cars of early technology when compared to the typical American car of the same vintage. Please note, fitted radio/stereo systems are usually subject to upgrade by purchasers so I do not ensure operation of these. Similarly, cruise control systems fitted to these classics were of an inferior design and I do not check or warrant the operation of these. Suspension and brakes on these cars are complex. We thoroughly check them and replace things that are identified faulty. But please understand, by example; if we change a brake line because it appears aged or faulty, we do NOT at the same time replace all other hoses because they are of similar age. This is considered "preventative maintenance". We do not do this unless specifically requested and is not included in the purchase price. Feel free to ask for this additional service. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 41 years old. This is the nature of any classic car and especially a Rolls-Royce which was very "complicated" for its era. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition:

The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is" with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment and accuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible for errors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. If any aspect of the description contradicts what can be seen in the photos, then the photos shall prevail as the reference point. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any written or oral statements about the vehicle. Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown and accepts no responsibility for any discrepancy with independent reports such as Carfax, AutoCheck, etc. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end. Also, you must remember that this is a classic +/-20 year old vehicle, and while it is up to you, I do not recommend that you just “hop in and drive it across the country”until you have familiarised yourself with the car. At least, I have never done that. I have always professionally transported the cars in enclosed carriers from where I bought them to my home.

PLEASE; IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ABIDE BY THESE TERMS, CONTACT ME BEFORE YOU BID AS, RESPECTFULLY, THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

I am sorry if these terms seem harsh but there seem to be some very unrealistic buyers out there - fortunately, only few of these people exist but those that do can make life difficult, so it appears EVERYTHING needs to spelled out. Very simply put, this is an old car being offered for sale. It is not new and is subject to the perils of age. Further, Rolls-Royces and Bentleys are not without nuances and idiosyncrasies and they are renown for a host of design issues which can make them not inexpensive to maintain. This is well documented in many circles. You need to be a special and considerate type of purchaser to own a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Their down-side is part of the fun in owning them! As the old saying goes; "we love to hate them and hate to love them!" So, please respect the terms and conditions when you bid.

~~oo00oo~~

~~ **Please note: This Bentley is part of the collection of the Park-Ward Motor Museum. As a professional collector and experienced restorer, I have my own Rolls-Royce and Bentley dedicated workshop with qualified craftsmen on hand. As a passionate collector of the marque I take great pride and pleasure in passing on any of my cars to its next owner (“caretaker”). In so doing, once this Bentley is sold, I will put the car back thru my workshop to ensure that it is mechanically sound and all major features and functions are operating as described even though the car is contractually being sold "as-is". Certain items such as final electrical tests and hydraulic pressure checks are usually left for this stage as these are considered "commissioning procedures". This and considerable other work will be performed after the sale and before delivery. This is all done at NO CHARGE. Who else selling a Bentley or Rolls-Royce on eBay does this?! Depending on our work load, please allow approximately 7-10 business days for this procedure. For more information on the Park-Ward Motor Museum and our skills, please eBay message me and I would be happy to show you some 100 Rolls-Royces restored to varying levels over the last few years. ~~

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible

Thu, 25 Apr 2013

Loses its Head, Keeps its Bespoke Cool
This is the 10th anniversary of the Bentley Continental GT, the 5,500-pound shim that pried open the market for bespoke luxury at $150K. We're into the second generation of the supercoupe that is still - and we think unfairly - derided as a grossly exaggerated Volkswagen, which to us is like saying the Hulk is just Bruce Banner in a tizzy. There are credible grounds for both statements, but in neither case do they accurately convey the chasm between the alpha and the omega.
Nevertheless, checking off the list of updated models brings us to the Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible, the moderately augmented version of the non-Speed GTC. Back to the notion of unfairness, it's probably just that to say the GT Speed Convertible is only "moderately" changed. It did, after all, take Bentley three years to engineer the changes that separate your 'basic' Bentley from the Speed variant, and although they might be imperceptible, they are numerous.

A diesel V8 is the perfect engine for the Bentley Bentayga

Wed, Aug 10 2016

Endless, effortless torque is something that's so often taken for granted. Sure, horsepower figures make all the headlines, but the sensation that comes with immediate and readily available thrust is something that can't be overstated, especially in luxury vehicles. High-strung, high-horsepower engines are great in certain applications, but Bentley owners don't want to work for the power, they just expect it to be there. That's why the 4.0-liter diesel V8 from the Audi SQ7 and its 664 lb-ft of torque make perfect sense for the new Bentley Bentayga. We've known for a while that Bentley is planning a diesel variant of the Bentayga, but it wasn't clear from where the engine was being sourced. According to Telegraaf in Holland, Bentley is pulling the diesel from the heart of its sibling Audi, and it won't be an effort to improve fuel efficiency. The all engine features two exhaust-driven turbos plus a 48-volt compressor that effectively cuts lag to nothing and propels the SQ7 TDI to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds. Expect a similar number in the Bentley. This engine is exactly what the Bentayga needs. There is nothing wrong with the W12 in the standard model, and you could argue a 12-cylinder engine is a better fit in a Bentley. But that's just because W12 sounds better than diesel. While the gasoline engine may more powerful and therefore make the vehicle quicker (leading to that " fastest SUV" claim Bentley loves), no owner will actually be racing their Bentayga to its theoretical top speed of 187 mph. They will be racing away from stoplights, though, in an effort to leave more plebeian cars and SUVs behind. All that low-end grunt is what those owners really want. It's unclear if Bentley will bring the Bentayga diesel to the United States, and given the current state of diesel here, the proposition seems unlikely. Expect an official debut at the Paris motor show in October. Related Video: News Source: Telegraaf Rumormill Bentley SUV Diesel Vehicles Luxury bentley bentayga audi sq7

Volkswagen Group's Vision 2030 strategy could bring revolution to the brands

Sat, May 11 2019

One would expect a corporate plan called "Vision 2030," looking 11 years ahead through wildly tumultuous times, to involve great change and numerous forks in numerous roads. According to Automobile's breakdown of Volkswagen's path forward, though, the plans contain some lurid potential surprises. The ultimate aim is return on investment, and that means ruthless reorganization of a conglomerate with eight primary car brands, two car sub-brands, and Ducati motorcycles. The first two Vision 2030 cornerstones Automobile mentions are near boilerplate: Production network restructuring, and "streamlining of key technologies." The latter two are the ones that could upend what we know as the Volkswagen Group: focusing on the Group's core brands — meaning Audi, Porsche, and VW — and transitioning to EVs, autonomy, and other mobility solutions. Based on the report, a quote from Audi's CTO referring to the Audi brand could cover how the Group plans to handle all of its brands: "We need to find a sustainable solution for the indefinite transition period until EVs eventually take over." The boutique divisions adjacent to carmaking, Ducati and Italdesign, look likely to be spun off. For the halo car brands — Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini — apparently shareholders want double-digit returns on investment, and the trio doesn't have long to hit the target. One eyebrow raiser is when the report states, "Bugatti is tipped to be gifted to [ex-VW Group Chairman] Ferdinand Piech." Piech fathered the Veyron during his tenure at VW, and it was thought he commissioned the La Voiture Noire, but he's lately stepped so far back from VW that he sold all his shares in the Group. Automobile quoted a senior strategist as saying of money-losing Bentley, "Why invest on a backward-looking enterprise when you can support a trendsetter? A proud history and excellent craftmanship alone don't cut it anymore." We guess no one at Ferrari, McLaren, or even Porsche got that memo. Bentley is reportedly close to being put in time out, and if brand CEO Adrian Hallmark can't right the Crewe ship, the hush-hush Plan B is to prop the Flying B up enough to lure a buyer. As for Lamborghini, caught between two masters at Audi and Porsche, even record-breaking numbers at the Italian supercar maker barely staved off sacrilege. It's said that VW brand CEO Herbert Diess considered putting a 5.0-liter Porsche V8 into the Aventador successor.
