Model Overview

Bentley's exceptional Continental has even more to offer for 2012. In addition to the W12-powered four-seat GT coupe and GTC convertible, Bentley has added a new V8 option to each car, sourced from its Audi counterparts. The new powerplant gives potential buyers even more flexibility when making the ultimate decision. The Continental has been gently massaged by Bentley engineers, rather than reimagined. The front end is more distinct from the rest of the lineup, and despite a curb weight of 5,500 pounds, the whole car looks leaner, more poised, and a bit more aggressive.Inside, Bentley refined an already-fantastic cabin, with continued use of just the right amount of real wood, chrome, and supple leather. Traditional power in the Continental GT and GTC has come from a 6.0L twin-turbocharged W12 engine. That continues for 2012, though power in both cars is up 15 horses to 567 hp, and torque is boosted accordingly to 516 ft-lb. Bentley claims a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 198 mph. Power is put to all four wheels with a 40/60 front-to-rear torque split through a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission, with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The W12 Continental GT is EPA-rated at 12 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway.New for this year is a V8 option. The turbocharged 4.0L unit produces 500 hp and 487 ft-lb of torque. The V8 GT and GTC are also all-wheel drive, though they benefit from a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Bentley figures the car will hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 188 mph, and the EPA estimates fuel consumption at 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.Suspension on both versions is courtesy of air springs with Continuous Damping Control, and behind each 20-inch alloy wheel are vented iron disc brakes with Bentley branded calipers in gloss black.Standard amenities on the W12 cars include bi-xenon projector headlights with LED running lights and taillights, power folding heated side mirrors, and a choice of 17 exterior paint colors. Inside you'll find full premium grade hides in one of four colors, 14-way power adjustable front seats, a Breitling clock, ambient lighting, and touchscreen infotainment with an 8-inch hi-resolution screen that incorporates AM/FM radio, HDD navigation, a single CD/DVD slot, integrated HVAC controls, and Bluetooth connectivity. Continentals with V8 power are similarly equipped, though certain choices are reduced. For instance, only seven exterior paint colors are available. Convertible GTCs are outfitted like their tin-top brothers, and the open roof comes courtesy of an auto-folding four-layer insulated fabric top in one of five colors. Options abound on the W12 cars: different wheels (including 21-inchers, chrome exterior accents, different interior veneers, lambswool rugs, special upholstery stitching, adaptive cruise control, GPS tracking system for a stolen Continental, premium audio systems, massage seating with ventilation, and a rearview camera.

Weekly Recap: Mercedes continues the pseudo-coupe craze with AMG-tuned CUV

Sat, Dec 13 2014

But as BMW's X6 has demonstrated, sport sells in in the crossover segment, and Mercedes is giving the people what they want. BMW proved there is a market for crossover utility vehicles designed to look like coupes – as much as a vehicle with four doors and noticeable ground clearance can look like a coupe, anyway. Now comes the reply from Mercedes-Benz: the GLE Coupe. The rakish crossover is a harbinger of things to come from Mercedes, as it begins the company's transition to a new nomenclature and marks the debut of the AMG Sport line. It also continues the recent coupe craze. Designers from many automakers, like Nissan and Volkswagen, have increasingly turned to swoopy, dramatic styling to make utility vehicles and sedans seem more desirable. By revealing the GLE 450 AMG Sport model first, Mercedes is clearly hoping to cast the GLE Coupe as a sportier, lifestyle-oriented alternative in its lineup of beefy crossovers and SUVs. Mercedes used the word "sport," or a variation of it, 53 times in its press release, so uh yeah, it's sporty. It's not an empty promise: Benz means business with the AMG Sport line. This GLE Coupe gets a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 rated at 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque paired with Mercedes' new nine-speed automatic transmission, and it runs with 4Matic all-wheel drive. Specs on the other GLE Coupe models were not disclosed. But as BMW's X6 has demonstrated, sport sells in in the crossover segment, and Mercedes is giving the people what they want. After all, more than 260,000 people have bought X6s since 2008, and Mercedes wants a piece of that. From certain angles, the GLE Coupe even looks vaguely like an X6. "This is really a vehicle that is all about status," said Dave Sullivan, product analysis manager for research firm AutoPacific. "You can buy a SUV that doesn't have the inherent qualities of a SUV, such as cargo hauling. People will likely be drawn to the looks. Coupes are all the rage." BMW, however, isn't running from the fight, and the updated 2015 X6 is arriving in showrooms this month. It also added a smaller sibling, the X4, to its coupe-crossover stable in July. The GLE Coupe arrives next year, though Mercedes hasn't specified exactly when it will hit showrooms from the factory in Alabama, or specified details on the rest of the non-AMG Sport models. In 2008, it was surprising the X6 was a hit. In 2015, it will be even more surprising if the GLE Coupe isn't.

A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

Bentley rolls out special Birkin edition Mulsanne in Europe

Wed, 15 Jan 2014

While focus in the automotive industry this week is undeniably on the Detroit Auto Show and the North American market, Bentley has introduced a new special edition overseas based on the Mulsanne.
Named after Sir Henry "Tiger" Tim Birkin, one of the legendary Bentley Boys of the 1920s and '30s, the Mulsanne Birkin Edition upgrades on Crewe's flagship limousine with some unique touches. Available in Ghost White, Damson burgundy or a two-tone Fountain Blue and Dark Sapphire paintjob, the Birkin Mulsanne features unique 21-inch wheels, special tread plates, a unique Flying B logos stitched into the headrests and inlaid into the dashboard and rear picnic tables.
Each of the 22 examples to be made will also come with a custom luggage set and comes standard with the optional Mulliner Driving Specification and upgraded entertainment system with twin 8-inch LCDs in the seatbacks, DVD player, wifi hotspot, Naim audio system and integrated iPads. Bentley hasn't announced pricing for the special European model, but if there were ever an example of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it," surely this is it.
