Bentley tests next next-gen Flying Spur on Porsche Panamera Turbo body

At first glance, the prototype in the gallery above looks like a blacked-out version of the new Porsche Panamera Turbo. But this is actually Bentley's tester for the next-gen Flying Spur. And since the upcoming Flying Spur, among other Bentley vehicles, will utilize the same MSB platform as the new Porsche, seeing the British automaker using a Panamera makes a lot of sense. The Flying Spur is essentially a four-door version of the Continental GT, which has design cues from the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. It's safe to assume that the next-gen Flying Spur will get the same treatment as well. Other than the fender flares, the prototype is identical to the Panamera Turbo. So how do we know that this is Bentley's prototype? According to our photographers, the prototype's license plate is registered as a Bentley with the UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. With the Flying Spur sharing the same platform as the Panamera, we expect the luxury sedan to get the same choice of engines, including the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. A concept is anticipated to come out in 2017 with a production variant coming a year later. Finally, a Bentley Bentayga just for falconers

Bentley is a company that knows what its customers want. For a price, they will turn a customer's desires into a six-figure rolling testament to wealth and excess. Mulliner, Bentley's in-house coachbuilding division, will adapt and modify their products for any taste or hobby. If fly fishing is your thing, Bentley and Mulliner have you covered. The new Bentley Bentayga Falconry by Mulliner is the perfect vehicle for any well-to-do falcon enthusiast. Not only does it have plenty of accessories and storage specifically tailored for falconers, the dash contains a beautiful, 430-piece wood inlay that displays a saker falcon soaring far above the desert. The scene took nine days to craft, undergoing cutting, sand shading, pressing, and double cutting. A wide variety of woods are used, including chestnut, eucalyptus pommele, holly, lacewood, maple, olive ash, and ripple sycamore. Up front, the Bentayga is fitted with a cork perch on the center console, flanked by the front seats. The hatch contains the real prize. Two cork chests - a flight station and a refreshment case - are fitted perfectly in the Bentayga's hatch. The pair sit on a movable tray for easier access. The flight station has a piano black veneer drawer that holds accessories like a GPS bird tracking unit, binoculars, and handcrafted leather bird hoods and gauntlets. These of course can be had as an additional option. Two additional perches are stored out back. With the hatch lifted, falcons can be prepared out back in the shade. All of this can be had for a price that's most likely far more than you probably think it is. Bentley isn't releasing numbers, but if you're buying a bespoke Bentayga, the cost is simply just another number. Bentley teases new Flying Spur's 3D diamond leather upholstery

Playing the long game before unveiling the new Flying Spur, Bentley's published the second teaser for the new "luxury grand touring sedan." The last one homed in on the retracting "Flying B hood" ornament. This one focuses on what Bentley says is "an automotive world-first," three-dimensional textured leather lining the cabin. Created by Crewe's craftsmen and demonstrated on the door panel, the leather adopts a diamond-quilted pattern, but without stitches indicative of quilting. Up close, it looks like the leather simply adheres to a complex relief form. That's trick we expect to be one of many that will supposedly "set new standards for contemporary craftsmanship." The coming third-generation Flying Spur will want to come out of the gate with just such goals. When the first generation arrived in 2005, it became the Toyota Camry for rich people. The second generation — which still rides on that original platform — blanched in the heat of competition from Bentley's own lineup, on top of competition from the Mercedes-Maybach below and cross-country rival Rolls-Royce Ghost. The new model is all new, from the MSB platform shared with the new Continental GT and Porsche Panamera, to a design that will put more separation between the two-door Continental and the four-door Flying Spur. Expect the 6.0-liter W12 with 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque as the marquee engine, and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 542 hp and 568 lb-ft as the economical choice. Eventual V8 S and Speed models will wring more grunt from those two engines. A plug-in hybrid will debut some point, based around a 2.9-liter V6. We don't know when the debut will happen, perhaps as soon as Pebble Beach in August, or as late as the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, or the Frankfurt Motor Show in between.
